Math Mini Lesson #1

Name: Hanna Fisher

Date: 04/12/2020
Discipline: Math
Grade Level: 2nd

TOPIC: Geometry

LESSON FOCUS: Identifying 2D shapes and their attributes

STANDARD(S):
2.G.1 Identify trapezoids, rhombuses, pentagons, hexagons, octagons,
parallelograms, quadrilaterals, cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones,
triangular prisms, rectangular prisms.
Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given
number of angles or a given number of equal faces.

OBJECTIVE(S):
 The student will identify attributes of 2-Dimensional shapes (trapezoids,
rhombuses, pentagons, hexagons, octagons, parallelograms, and
quadrilaterals)

ASSESSMENT:
 Proficiency scale
 Pre/post assessment (attached in Weebly)

MATERIALS:
 2-D attributes graphic organizer
 Prezi Presentation
 Comparing Shapes Worksheet

PROCEDURE: *All procedures included in Prezi Presentation*

 Anticipatory Set- I will go over the proficiency scale and have students
first mark where they feel they are at when identifying shapes and
attributes. At the end of the mini unit, I will have them score themselves
again so we can see the improvement or what needs to be worked on
more. The students can print out the proficiency scale from the Weebly
website.
 On the first slide of the Prezi, I will have multiple pictures of shapes
shown. Students will download the pre/post assessment from my
Weebly Website and write down how the shapes are similar or different
from one another. This will be a pre-assessment. They can use these
sentence starters for help:
o I know that ________ is different than ___________ because…
o I know that __________is similar to _____________ because…
o This shape has _________ but this shape has ___________...

 I will do a voice over of the Prezi explaining the vocabulary needed for
this lesson.
o Quadrilateral: Any shape with FOUR straight sides
 Square, rectangle, rhombus, trapezoid, all parallelograms
o Parallel: means there is an equal distance between the lines or
sides of the shape. They will never meet.
o Parallelograms: quadrilaterals that have opposite sides that are
parallel
 Square, rectangle, rhombus
o Attributes: characteristic or feature of an object that allows for
grouping of it with other similar objects
 Attributes of 2D shapes are sides and vertices
 Side- Outside edge of a shape
 Vertices- where the sides meet to form corners
 I will continue the Prezi by describing the attributes of these 5 different
shapes
o Trapezoid- 4 sides, 4 vertices, 1 pair of parallel sides
o Rhombus- 4 sides of equal length, 4 vertices, both opposite sides
are parallel (2 pairs of parallel sides)
o Pentagon- 5 sides, 5 vertices
o Hexagon- 6 sides, 6 vertices
o Octagon- 8 sides, 8 vertices
 After the Prezi, the teacher and the students will download and fill out a
2-D shapes attributes graphic organizer together. (Graphic organizer
and video of me filling it out attached in Weebly website)
 For independent practice, the student will do a worksheet comparing two
shapes to decide which shape was drawn correctly and why. (Attached
in Weebly Website)
 For the students’ assessment, they will do the same thing as their pre-
assessment. They will describe differences and similarities of the shapes
shown. (Attached in Weebly website)

MODIFICATION/DIFFERENTIATION:
 Provide manipulative shapes for those who need
 Voice over and closed captioning
