QA – Factorial

Factorial: The product of n consecutive natural numbers (or positive integers) starting from 1
to n is called as the factorial ‘n’

i.e., n! = 1×2×3×4×5×6…….(n - 2) (n - 1)n

So, that 4! = 1×2×3×4 = 4×3×2×1= 24

5! = 1×2×3×4×5 = 5×4×3×2×1= 120

6! = 1×2×3×4×5×6 = 6×5×4×3×2×1=720

Important points:

i) Factorial n is written as “n!”

ii) 0! = 1 and 1! = 1
iii) n! is always an even number if n ≥ 2
iv) n! is always end with zero if n ≥ 5
( )
v) (n+1)! = n! x (n+1) OR ( )
( )
vi) (n+2)! = n! x (n+1) x (n+2) OR ( )( )
( )
( )
vii) (n+p)! = n! x (n+1) x (n+2)… x (n+p) OR ( )( ) ( )

Solved Examples

1) If P + P! = P+1, then the value of P is:

(a) 4
(b) 6
(c) 0
(d) 3
Consider P = 0, then
0 + 0! = 0+1
0+1=1
1=1
Hence (c) is the correct option.
2) If (P+2)!+P+2 = ( ) then the value of P is:
(a) 5

(b) 7
(c) 3
(d) 0
Consider P = 3 then

5! +3+2 = 125

120+5 = 125

125 = 125

Hence (c) is the correct option.

3) If n! +(n+1)(n+4)= then the value of n is :

(a) 4
(b) 5
(c) 6
(d) 3
Consider n = 4 then
4! + 5*8 = 64
24 + 40 = 64
64 = 64
Hence (a) is the correct answer.
4) The appropriate value of P for the relation (P! + 3) = (P - 1)3 is :
(a) 3
(b) 4
(c) 5
(d) None of these
Let us consider P = 4 then
4! + 3 = (4 - 1)3
24 + 3 = 33
27 = 27
Hence (b) is the correct option.

5) The value of is :
( ) ( ) ( ) ( )

= 9.8.7 = 504
6) ( ) where p>q>1 and p = q2 then the value of p2 + q2 is:
(a) 272 (b) 90 (c) 20 (d) none of (a), (b),(c)
Let us consider ( )
Then Pq= 42 = 16
And (p – q)! +p= (4 – 2)! +4= 2! +4= 6
Hence it is impossible
Again consider q = 3, then
93 = 729
And (p – q)! +p= (9 – 3)! +9= 6! +9 = 720 +9=729
Thus we get n = 3 and m = 9 the probable values
Now m2 + n2 = 92 + 32 = 81 + 9 = 90
Hence (b) is the correct option

( )
7) If ( ) ( )

(a) 5
(b) 12
(c) 6
(d) 2

( ) ( )( )( )
Now
And 15
And 9
But 5
120 = 120
Hence and n=2 is the correct answer, thus (d) is the right choice.

8) The value of
(1.2.3..8).(10.12.13..17).(19.22.23..26).(28.32.33…35).(37.42.43…44)
(46.52.53…53)…(91.92….98)

( )

( )

( )

(d)

(1.2.3..9).(11.12.13..19).(21.22.23..29)…..…(91.92….99)

( ) ( ) ( ) ( )

Hence (d) is the correct option.

9) The expression 1!+3!+5!+….+(2n+1)! -1(where ) is not a/an :

(a) composite number
(b) even number
(c) perfect square
(d) multiple of 9
1!+3!+5!-1=1+6+120-1=127-1=126

QA – Factorial

Since, the option (a), (b) and (d) are ruled out so the rest option (c) is the correct one.

10) The HCF and LCM of 17! And 42! Are respectively :
(a) 1! and 42!
(b) 17! and 17!
(c) 17!and 42!
(d) can’t be determined
Since 17! Is contained in 42! so the LCM is 42! and 17! Is common in 17! And 42!, so the HCF is
17!
Hence (c)
