Atlanta seemsto have a good reputationamong musicians,large
and small,fbr being receptiveto up-and-comingartists. One example
of this is the new Atlantaband RedLenerAgent. "We relocatedto Atlanta
abouta year and a half ago,andhavealreadyincreasedour fan basegreat-
ly. We recentlysold out a show!" exclaimsJamesTempletonof RLA.
"The sceneis very healthyand is supportedby club owners,radio DJs
and national artists. Peoplein the music industry are very receptiveand
desireto seelocal music thrive."
Solo act Clay Cook agreeswith the masses."l can't think of a better
city in which to be an emergingartist,"he says. "There's a greatfeel-
ing of brotherhoodwithin the songwriting community here in Atlanta."
AII in all, the belief is: "If you're willing to work hard, and you have
the passionand energy,other peoplein the scenewill pick up on that
and be interestedin your music," Ashton says.
And where do theseupcoming tend to perfbrm? Smith's Olde
Bar hasbeenan Atlanta favorite for quite somenow. Train even got it's
staft pedorming at this local bar. Someother favorites of local rock and

soul artistsareEarthlinkLive, Vinyl, The 10 High Club, and &ldie's Attic.
"The l0 High is by far my favorite," saysVan Hunt, an Atlanta native,
and Capitol recordsartist. Van is one of thosewho hastruly "made it."
His manageris none other lhan Anterican ldol ludge and tbrmer Jour-
ney guitarist Randy Jackson. "Having Randy as a manageris great. We
have a very closerelationship,"quipsVan. "He's very attentive,intel-
Iigent and, as the world now knows, opinionated.And it works."
The melodic pop/rock band SevenSharpNine is anotherlocal band
that hasfinally madeit to the top. "We recently signedwith Sweetwater
Recordsout of Detroit," Chris Wold says. Also known as 7s9 to fans,
they recommendgig-swappingas a way to get your foot in the door.
"On tour, we openedfor a few bandsthat had bookedshows,and then
they openedfbr us at gigs we had booked," explainsWold.
Well on it's way to the top is The Sweaqwhich for the pasteight
yearshasbeenknown asAlastor. This altemativerock bandcan be heard
at Music Midtown this month and is currently working on a new album.
"It's great when you run into peopleat clubs that are willing to take a
chanceon you, especiallyas a new band," The Swear says.
EMO, or emotionalpop rock, takesthe lead when The Drexlers
are on stage. This six-personband has beenevolving for the past 10
years. "Therearea lot of savvylistenersout therehungrylbr good music,"
David Drexler says. "I think we're finally there."
