Education Internship – H453/454/455 Lesson plan template:

Name: Sanjana Patel Cooperating Teacher: Ms. Fritz

Subject: AP Research Date of Lesson: 9/24/2019

CLS #1 - Learning Targets (CLS/CCS) for lesson:
(Ask your teacher, if you are unsure. Needs to be written out completely - not just a number.)

Creating an Annotated Bibliography: Students will be able to analyze various pieces of evidence and synthesize an argument to input into their Literature
review
A. Citing sources correctly
B. Pulling relevant evidence

CLS #1 - Objective:

(Student centered, measurable, and specific)
What are the STUDENTS doing? HOW are they doing it? WHY are they doing this specifically?
The students will...  by..  in order to...

Collect sources relevant to their  using their iPads to access the  investigate trends formulated by
discipline  Fremd databases  previous research and findings

Objective: (Combine the 3 boxes above into 1 complete sentence)

The students will collect sources relevant to their discipline by using their iPads to access the Fremd databases in
order to investigate trends formulated by previous research and findings.

CLS #2 - Introduction (anticipatory set):
(Related to lesson, grabs students attention, and promotes engagement through interaction)
I asked a question of the day which pertained to citations and bibliographies. After facilitating a discussion based on
the proposed question, I asked each individual for a closing statement to wrap up the discussion and to give them a
chance to put their thoughts into words. After, I asked students to point out mistakes in incorrect citation that I pulled
up on the screen to gage how much they already know about citations.( MLA and APA). This helped identity what key
ideas to go over. By starting off the lesson with his, I increased student participation and interaction which will help
them in the research process.

CLS #3 - Teaching Input:
(List the steps to teaching this lesson – thoroughly explain/detailed directions – appropriate instructional method - should be the longest part of lesson
plan)
1. Check the level of understanding of the students with the sample MLA and APA citations and asking where the
problem areas are in the citations.
2. Step 1: Citing the Source
a. Go to the Fremd Website
b. Click the library tab (Make sure iPad is in landscape mode)
c. Access the Online Research Databases
d. Sign in with username: lastname**** password: schoolId
e. Click on Ebsco Research Databases
f. Type in related topic to research question
g. After finding an article, click cite source
h. Find appropriate citation (APA, MLA, Chicago/Turabian, AMA)
i. Check curated citation with Fremd’s citation guide
3. Step 2: Annotating the Source
a. Create a PDF of article by exporting to notability
b. Ask questions
i. “Why do you think this source is significant?”
ii. “Is this source relevant to your research inquiry?”
c. If questions can be answered with clear answers, then students can move on. If not, then find different
source
d. In notability, annotate source with the highlighting tool and the pen tool in an AP level style.
e. Show examples of annotated articles
4. Step 3: Creating the Annotated Bibliography
a. Remind students to find the correct information you need for each source, consult the citation guide
listed under the library page on the Fremd website.
b. Entries are listed in alphabetical order. Do not alphabetize using "the," "a," or "an." If you have a source
that starts with a number, those go first in alphabetical order.
c. If entries go to a second line, indent the second and all subsequent lines.
d. The works cited page is always double spaced.
e. Do NOT number entries. Do NOT bullet point entries.
5. Step 5: Staying Organized
a. Create google folder called Annotated Bibliography
i. Mention this will be the folder you will share with Ms. Fritz
ii. Create pdf for each annotated paper and export into google drive
iii. Each addition will have the name “# of 25 (Author last name)
6. Step 6: Extra Sources
a. Purdue Owl
i. Can be used for correct formatting
ii. https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/purdue_owl.html

CLS #4 - Checking for Understanding:
(What method will you use to check that the majority of students “get it” before moving on - explain)

I will provide each student with an exit slip that has a source that needs to be cited in MLA and APA format. I will give
all necessary information on the slip for the citation and will include spaces for the students to clearly write their
citation. With this information, I will see if the students need extra practice with citations and create more examples for
future practice.

CLS #5 - Follow up/Closure:
(Review major points – relate back to objective(s) - relate to future application)
This lesson is a large stepping stone to writing an effective literature review. I will make sure each student has
enough resources and knowledge to start this section of their research paper and future assignments. They will also
have to understand the trends in citations by the end of this presentation.

Instructional Materials/Supplies:
(Detailed list of everything needed – includes copies of instructional materials, notes, keys, etc.)
Only school iPads will be needed for this lesson because they will need to follow along or take notes throughout
the lesson. All materials used can be found on Schoology if students want to access them. I will be presenting a
slide presentation to show examples of bibliographies.
