Die Liebe saß als Nachtigall

    
The love sat like-a nightingale

im Rosenbusch und sang;

   
in-the rosebush and sang;
(Cupid sat perched on a rosebush / and sang like a nightingale;)

es flog der wundersüße Schall

    
it flew the wonderfully-sweet sound
(the wonderfully sweet tones flew)

den grünen Wald entlang.

   
the green forest along.
(throughout the green forest.)

Und wie er klang, da stieg' im Kreis

       
And as it rang-out, there arose in-a circle
(And as it sounded, there arose all around)

aus tausend Kelchen Duft,

   
from-a thousand calyxes/flowers fragrance,

und alle Wipfel rauschten leis',

    
and all-the treetops rustled softly,

und leise ging die Luft.

Die Bäche schwiegen, die noch kaum

splashed from the heights,

die Rehlein standen wie im Traum

the fawns stood as-if in-a dream

und lauschten dem Getön.

and listened to-the tone.

Und hell und immer heller floss

     
And bright and ever brighter poured

der Sonne Glanz herein,

   
the sun's shine down,

um Blumen, Wald und Schlucht ergoss

     
about blossoms, wood and gorge poured

sich goldig roter Schein.

Ich aber zog den Weg entlang

I though walked the path along

und hörte auch den Schall.

Ach! was seit jener Stund' ich sang,
