Seminar Report

• Hosting Institution: De La Salle Lipa

• Seminar Date and Venue: March 04, 2019

• Seminar Title: Math Proficiency Masterclass

• Objectives of the Seminar:

➢ To have basic knowledge about Mathematics.

➢ To identify the basic calculator techniques in solving math problems.

➢ To have knowledge about the basic concept of Mathematics.

• The Speaker: Engr. John Andrew Mañacop and Engr. Honey Lynn Deramos

• The Seminar:

The Mathematics is the science that deals with the logic of shape,

quantity and arrangement. Math is all around us, in everything we do. It is

the building block for everything in our daily lives, including mobile devices,

architecture (ancient and modern), art, money, engineering, and even

sports.

Mathematics is a compiled set of subjects. When you say Math the

first thing that comes into mind is Algebra since it is the foundation of

Mathematics. It is also related to other subjects including Trigonometry,

Analytical Geometry, Solid Geometry Statistics and Probability, Differential

Calculus, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations and many other.

The first speaker, Engr. Honey Lynn Deramos started her opening

with the struggles in taking a Board Exam though she is an ECE Engr. She

said that studying for the board exam is quite different from that of studying

in college. Then she explained the basic mathematics subject followed by

the calculator technique. The second speaker, Engr. John Andrew

Mañacop explained things that are related in studying in college and

advertised their review center which is Excel.

• Evaluation:

From Engr. Honey Lynn’s presentation, calculator is your bestfriend.

Just like her examples, especially in calculus, for example Differential

Calculus, it will take some time for a certain individual like me to remember

the rules in differentiating which is hard to memorize or even recall. Same

goes with Integral Calculus, there are rules to be follower that is hard to

remember but using the calculator technique, she taught us that we can

manipulate the choices and use them. At least using the calculator can give

us a more accurate answer than solving it manually. But she insisted that it

differs from a person, whether it is easier for his or her to calculate it

manually or use calculator technique. As for me, I learned to appreciate my

calculator more.

Diving in more into the discussion, Engr. Honey Lynn first taught us

about the concept first before using the calculator technique. She is right it

is necessary to understand first the concept for example in Analytical

Geometry, the concepts of lines and slopes so that we can easily

understand when we are using the calculator that it is the same concept.
Because mathematics is the same all over the world, math can act

as a universal language. A phrase or formula has the same meaning,

regardless of another language that accompanies it. In this way, math helps

people learn and communicate, even if other communication barriers exist.

I also learned and appreciated more about the importance of Mathematics,

as math strengthens analytical skills, promotes a better understanding of

the world, exercises the brain, builds problem-solving skills, facilitates

improvements to technology and stimulates creativity.

Therefore, after the discussion I can say that I learned a lot from

Engr. Honey Lynn and Engr. John Andrew as they explain the calculator

techniques necessary for the problem. I learned that there things about the

calculator that I didn’t know and it is very essential to use since manual

calculations take so much time and in board exams, your worst enemy is

time because of the number of items needed to be solved at only a specific

given time. Also, she briefly explained and answered all the questions of my

classmates and gave a very educational presentation and demonstration

with drawings on the white board that can be seen by everyone so that we

can easily understand the topic. She included trigonometry, calculus

analytical geometry and many other presented good and explained very

well also. I can say that they both established a good foundation in

Mathematics calculator techniques so that us listeners can explore and

understand both calculator and understand the concept of different subjects

in Mathematics necessary in answering the board exam.
