Design your own island!

In this assignment, you will be using a number of geographic skills and concepts by designing
your own island.
Use the table below as a checklist to make sure that you have completed all 14 steps.
Completed?
Explanation (yes/no)
1. Draw a one centimetre border around the outside of the A3 paper.

2. Use the border to construct a grid. Use only the numbers from 01-10 on both
the x-axes and the y-axes. Make sure the grid lines are drawn at regular
intervals.
3. Place the capital city at grid reference 055055. Name and create a symbol
for it. Remember the symbol as you will need it for a key/ legend at step 7.
Locate and name three more cities. Connect these three cities to the capital
city by road.

Create an airport at 032088. Link this to the capital city by a motorway.

Create a pier at 077073.

4. Create the coastline for the island. Include at least one bay, one beach and
an area of cliffs. You should try to cover most of the A3 sheet of paper.

Label the sea.

5. The island is quite hilly. Add contours line to show that the capital city is
220 metres above sea level. Add a volcano in the west of the island. The
volcano is 328 metres above sea level.

6. Name your newly created island.

7. Place a north arrow on the map to indicate the orientation of the island.

8. Provide a key/legend to explain the symbols on your map.

9. Provide a map scale in centimetres and kilometres (can you also use ratio?)

10. Provide a centrally positioned map title.

11. Add at least five points of interest, e.g. a castle and a golf course. Connect
the five points to the road network.
Label the five points and add the symbols to the key/legend. Include the
grid reference for each point.
12. Measure the distance, in kilometres, from the capital city to the airport by
motorway. Include this in your key/legend

13. Ask yourself: Is the map is neat? Could the map be improved?

14. On a separate piece of paper, provide visitors with a tourist information

sheet to welcome them to the island and to explain to them how to see some
sights. This will also include written direction and a sketch map from the
pier to the capital city. You should use distances, heights and the various
items on the key/legend to make this successful. This should be one side of
A4.
