Assignment #1

Name: Manuela Arévalo Torres

Interculturality
Grp. 6
Imagine that you are an advisory committee for Bogotá. A major supermarket
from a foreign country is preparing to open a new store in BOGOTA. Prepare
answers in order to convince the investors.
-What information can you provide about the people in your community to allow
the supermarket to respond to your city’s needs?
Colombians can reach a supplier of many products to meet their needs. Around
what can be found in a supermarket, it is a good idea that it arrives well-endowed
and at not very high prices. This is because the market can become so large, that
it is not for the convenience of citizens very high prices.
Now, market is very common in homes, for this reason the basic basket in the
country consists of: milk, bread, eggs, grains such as rice, cheese, chicken, meat,
potatoes and fruits. However, there are the basic cleaning products: Toothpaste,
soap, toothbrush, hair products and others.
However, this is not only necessary, because you also need food and pet
products, other household products and others for people such as sweets, snacks,
in some cases alcohol, baby food, desserts, and much more.
-Where in the community would you advise the company to build?
The appropriate community in which the company should build the supermarket
would depend on the prices they are willing to take out the market. However, in a
medium-high stratum it would be more beneficial, because they are used not only
to buy basic necessities products as the lower strata do, they would be willing to
consume much more once they see the supermarket.
-Are there areas where it should not build?
As I mentioned in the paragraph above, in the lower strata it is not as advisable to
build if it is a major and successful supermarket, due to the low income that this
could cause them, and they would not have the success they would expect to
build more Franchises in the country.
-Will it compete with existing stores?
Of course, in fact it is a market in which there is a competition, because there are
many supermarkets in the country, such as Jumbo, Makro, Éxito, Carulla,
Olimpica, D1, Justo & Bueno, Alkosto, Ara, Price Smart and others.
However, even if they do not handle exactly the same products, they are highly
competitive because in the same way they can be obtained in some cases and in
others the supplements. On the other hand, competition around prices is also
very high, because Colombians prefer good quality at an economical price, and
both play in the role of determining a choice where the person goes shopping.
-What cultural or economic impact might you foresee with the introduction of the
new company?
The introduction of the company would have a development, growth and good
competitiveness in the country.
On the side of the cultural impact, it would generate development, and
encourage interest in people to know what the company has to contribute and
likewise the community to contribute culturally to the company.
On the economic side, it could have a large growth impact around the creation of
jobs, the community will benefit from the productive activity and at the same
time being a legal company, and it can collaborate in the anti-corruption impact.
