Task A4 | D

 esign brief
🔎 What?

❗Why?

Develop a design brief, which  You have to make a decision at this point in the project: What will you design and create,
presents the analysis of relevant  for whom and why. You want your decision to be based on sufficient background
research.  research.

⚙ How?
Research results summary
● Present the main results of your research (from A2) in a concise list of bullet points. This must be in your own words!
● Illustrate your take-aways with imagery wherever you feel this reduces the amount of writing needed. However, don’t
add images for the sake of adding images. Cite any images that you use.
● Cite (in-text) from the sources that you found your answers from. Use the proper MLA format.

DEFINITIONS  By consulting sources, I have found out:

● A fabric is a cloth or material for making clothes, covering furniture, etc.
● A textile is something made by knitting or weaving fibres together like a t-shirt.
● A garment is an item clothing like a pair of jeans or a t-shirt, basically anything
we wear is a garment

MANUFACTURING  The process of making cotton textiles is as follows -

1. Mixing and blowing
2. Carding
3. Silver lap former
4. Combing
5. Drawing
6. Roving
7. Spinning
8. Winding
9. Warping
10. Sizing
11. Drawing in
12. Weaving
13. Inspection/Folding
14. Packing
15. Product

TECHNIQUES AND  By consulting sources such as, I have found out the following information that I can use for
TOOLS FOR MAKING  designing and creating my product:

The following steps are used for making a sewing pattern.
1. Tracing the seams with chalk
2. Spread out the pattern paper
3. Flatten the original garment on top of the paper
4. Trace around the perimeter of the largest area
5. Repeat for the back and smaller pieces
6. Sketch a seam allowance
7. Cut out the pieces
The key features of a good pattern are-
1. Ease - it should have a comfortable fit, not too loose, not too tight.
2. Line - the neckline, armhole, waistline and wrist line should be smooth and neat.
3. Grain - The placement of warp and weft yarns form grain. Heavier threads tend
to drape well on the figure with graceful folds when gathers, pleats, and ruffles
occur on the straight grain.
4. Set - A well-fitted garment has a smooth set without any wrinkles. The slanting
wrinkles are caused by the garment being strained over some curves or bulges of
the body.
I will need the following for making my product
● Thread (polyester and cotton and waxed)
● Eyelets
● Studs
● Rivets
● Snap fasteners
● Velcro (sew-on and stick on)
● Anything you request that is approved by the teacher.
● Fabric glue
● Contact adhesive (Elmer’s multi-purpose spray adhesive)
● Sewing machine (Brother JA1450NT)
● Needles
● Seam ripper
● Fabric shears
● Rotary cutter
● Hole punch
● Rivet/eyelet setter and die

CLIENT INFORMATION  ● This design is for myself. The target audience I represent are female teenagers
(13 years to 15 years). I like bright colours like yellow, orange, light blue, etc. and
I like a product that is comfortable to wear or carry around.

● --This is a colour scheme I like.

● -- This is how I like to dress.

● -- This is somewhat how I’d like my room as I've always wanted posters and
frames but I like my room as it has photos of my friends, family and I. My room is
also a little smaller.

PRACTICAL SKILLS  By completing the practical skills tasks, I have learned the following skills (list & explain):
● Sewing a button on a piece of cloth
● Finishing knot behind the button
● Running stitch - it is a straight stitch
● Overstitch - it goes over the cloth in the other one
● Backstitch - it is a straight stitch without any gaps
● Blanket stitch - it is like the overstitch but has a line running along the top of it
● French knot - it is a fancy knot mostly used for eyes

The skills that will be useful for my project are (list & explain why):
● Backstitch - for sewing the outside of the bone

The skills that I still need to practice or want to learn more about are (list & explain):
● Backstitch
● Using sewing machine

references listed in this section.

Project commitment
● State what type of product you are going to develop in your project in this unit and outline the direct practical purpose
of this product.
● Outline the bigger picture purpose of the product.
● Describe the client or target audience for whom you will develop the product.

Product and Purpose   In this project, I will create … a soft toy for myself.

The purpose of my product is...i like soft toys and making one out of a pair of denim jeans
is easy.

Design Goal  My product will address the design problem of -textiles being quickly sent to landfills- by…
helping recycle clothes which are no longer useful. A soft toy can be used for long so I
won't have to throw it after using it for sometime

Intended   My product is intended to be used by … myself as I love soft toys

Target audience

Target audience representative  I would describe my client as…my client is a teenager (13 - 15 years) and I like the colour
blue. I like dogs and that is why I am making a dog bone.

Their needs and wants for the product are...denim jeans, a squeaky toy, needle, thread,
scissors and maybe a sewing machine.
