CONTENTS

• Update Status
• Interaction with Other Standards
• Key Changes

• Disclaimer: Although part of ME-015 Working Group, the Standard has yet to
be finalised, approved and released; and is therefore subject to change. The

group or Standards Australia.
DR AS3992:2019 UPDATE STATUS

• Current version – AS/NZS 3992:2015

• Weld Australia (formerly WTIA), with Industry backing, proposed the project to Standards
Australia following comments / amendments raised by industry.
• Standards Australia, through Pressure Equipment group ME001, formed working group
(ME015) to review comments and update the Standard.
• Standards New Zealand opted not to partake, therefore the new Standard will be AS only, not
AS/NZS.
• July – September 2019: Public Comment – DR AS 3992:2019
• Release of new Standard – anticipated early 2020.
DR AS 3992:2019 INTERACTION WITH OTHER
STANDARDS

• AS 3992 is a standard that falls under the umbrella of the AS1200 suite of standards
• Particular interactions:
• Design Standards AS1210; AS1228; and AS4041
• In-Service Inspection AS/NZS3788
• Fabrication Standard AS4458*
• Testing Standards AS4037; AS2205
• Revision & Addition of new requirements to Sections 1, 5, 7, 8
and 9
• Roles and responsibilities have changed.
• Clarification of testing requirements particularly those requiring
impact testing.
DR AS 3992:2019 • Revision of Appendices B and D, and new Appendix G
• Addition of new Appendix I to provide guidance on oxidation
KEY CHANGES colours for stainless steel and titanium
• Correction of errors and ambiguities
• Revision of procedure qualification requirements for special
welds
• Guidance for welding of service exposed materials
SECTION 5 – ESSENTIAL VARIABLES

• Essential variables for welding procedure qualification

• Addition of clauses 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 and 5.4
• For most part, repositioning of notes of Table 5.1 into clauses

• Welding consumables (Table 5.1 item 5)

– Use consumables within manufacturer requirements

• Weld energy input (Table 5.1 item 7)

- Restriction in arc energy range:
• New: +30% / -25%;
• Previously +80% / -50%
SECTION 5 – ESSENTIAL VARIABLES

• Material Groupings

• Table 5.2 – combination of Table 5.3 and Appendix G (AS/NZS 3992:2015)

• Basis for grouping of steels
• Examples across AS / ASME / ISO (Reduced examples compared to 2015
version)
• New Groupings B1 – B5: Introduced to address comparatively new materials
produced for the HRSG’s, supercritical boilers and process plants
SECTION 5: ESSENTIAL VARIABLES

SECTION 8: SPECIAL WELDS

• Significant re-write of Section 8

• Clarification around testing for surfacing – corrosion resistant, hard facing, and cladding.
• Includes test pieces and test requirements
• Clarification – Temper bead welding (Clause 8.3)
• Not only overlay welding – any technique that controls microstructure of HAZ and/or base
metal or previously deposited weld metal
• Test pieces
• Test requirements – includes Bend, hardness testing, and impacts (where required by PE
standard or design specification
SECTION 8 – PROCEDURE QUALIFICATION SPECIAL
WELDS
• Weld repairs to service exposed equipment (Clause 8.4)
