Unit 1 Evaluation
Experiences

Task: Individually, you will write a personal statement as if you were applying to a graduate program in a
foreign university.

Objectives:

1. Explore areas of interest


2. Investigate about graduate programs abroad
3. Apply the linguistic contents covered in the unit
4. Compose a semi academic text, including proper structures and format
5. Integrate academic vocabulary such as the use of connectors and varied expressions

Guidelines:

1. Submission 1 (20%)
a. Think about your interests and decide which area of specialization suits your expectations (TESOL,
Education, Administration, Applied Linguistics or any other certification)
b. Explore which universities offer the degree or certification you selected
c. Think about your background —academic credentials, achievements, clubs, organizations or any
experience worth mentioning— so as to include it in your essay
d. Create a pre-draft

2. Submission 2 (30%)
a. Draft the ideas you will include in each paragraph
b. Start writing. Do not forget to proofread!
c. Compose a draft that contains 5 paragraphs

3. Submission 3 (50%)
a. Edit your five-paragraph essay based on the feedback received by your classmates.
b. Submit the final version of your essay

Requirements:
1. The task is individual
2. Follow the format of a five-paragraph essay
3. Integrate the elements presented in class in their corresponding paragraph
4. Meet the deadlines with no delay, since these will be penalized
5. The peer review session will be mandatory. Nonattendance will be penalized

TASK POINTS

Research: The student performs a pertinent, coherent and complete research of an international /6
graduate programme. The argumentation is also coherent and well-supported.

Brainstorming: The brainstorming portraits the pre composition process of the text, covers pros and /4
cons, requirements, skills, main ideas, etc.

Use of rubric: The score given by the student is coherent with the feedback given by their peers. /5

Feedback analysis: Each aspect is addressed from a realistic and critical point of view, coherent /10
self assessment is performed.

Format: The personal statement meets the requirements of the genre (5-paragraph essay) /3

Coherence: The content is always relevant and appropriate to the task, there is no made up /5
information.

Cohesion: The text makes effective use of cohesive devices to achieve readability. /5

Grammar: Ideas include minor errors that do not interfere with understanding in terms of structure /6
and/or intelligibility.

Vocabulary: Ideas include relevant and varied vocabulary as specified in the task guidelines. /6
