AIR CONDITIONING CYCLES

1- A hall has the following specification


 Sensible heat gain [24 kW]
 Latent heat gain [6 kW]
 Hall maintained at [26C DBT and 50% RH]
 Outdoor air condition [36C DBT and 24 WBT]

If 1000L/s of outdoor air are to be mixed with 2000 L/s of return air then Part of the air
mixture passes through a cooling coil and the rest to be by-passed around the cooling coil.
Assuming the air leaves the cooling coil at 90 %RH then find:
 Coil cooling capacity in ton-ref
 Supply air temperature
 Hall cooling load(space cooling load)
 Draw the psychometric cycle and line diagram.

2- A summer air conditioning system consists of water chiller and an air reheater, part of
return air is mixed with the outside air before the air washer (chilled water spray) while the
other part by-pass the air washer. The following data were collected:
 Inside design condition 26C DBT and 50% RH
 Outside design condition 35C DBT and 26 WBT
 Fresh air ventilation rate [2000 L/s]
 Internal sensible heat gain [40 kW]
 Internal latent heat gain [17.5 kW]

Temperature difference between supply and inside air is 6 C and equal masses of return
air and by-pass air are used. Determine the following:
 Refrigeration capacity of water chiller in ton-ref..
 Heating capacity of the air heater.

3- The following data refer to the design feature used in designing the summer air
conditioning plant of a theater
 Seating capacity [1500 person]
 Inside condition [24C DBT and 50% RH]
 Outside condition [34C DBT and 26 WBT]

5- An air conditioning system is to be designed for a restaurant, the data available are

 The calculated latent loads to be removed from the space [10.5 kW]
 by-pass factor [0.17]

If 20%fresh air and 80%recirculated air are mixed and passed through the conditioner coil
then find the following:

 Dew-point temperature of the coil

6- In an air conditioning unit, air is received at a rate of 1000 kg/h at condition of 26C DBT
and 55 % RH. The unit consists of cooling coil, where the air is cooled and dehumidified to
3C DBT and 90% RH, then air passes through an electric heater and leaves it at 21C
DBT .After that air passes through an air washer .where it is humidified to 95%RH. Part of

the air is by-passed across the air washer to have final air relative humidity of 60%. Find the
following:
 The by-pass factor of the air washer
 The capacity of the cooling coil
 The capacity of the heating coil

7- A hall is to be maintained at 24 C DBT& 60%RH where :

If the quantity of recirculated air is mixed with the conditioned air after the cooling coil, then
find the following:

8- An auditorium is to be air-conditioned for the following out-door and comfort conditions

The rise in temperature of the air inside the auditorium is limited to 7 C, 70% of the room
air going to exhaust is recirculated and mixed with 30% fresh air. The required condition is
achieved first by cooling and dehumidification and then heating the air. The dew point of the
cooling coil is 12C. find the following

12- In a summer air conditioning system, outside air at 35C DBT, 17C WBT to be mixed
with return air at 26C DBT, 60%RH . The mixture is sensibly precooled by passing through
an air cooler,then adiabatically humidified to 90% RH by passing through an air washer. If
the room sensible heat gain is 275 kW with room sensible heat factor 0.8 and mass of
return air is three times that of fresh air. Calculate:
 The capacity of air precooler
 The make water necessary for the air washer in CMH

13- A winter air conditioning unit consists of a preheating coil, a spray system, and
reheating coil. The unit is designed to handle 8000 kg /h of fresh air. The heat loss from the

space is 9 kW. The outside air enters the unit at 7C DBT,4C WBT . The air leaves the
spray system at 90% RH .The unit delivers air at 26 C DBT,30 % RH . Determine:
 The condition maintained inside the space
 The quantity of water consumed during humidification
 The heating capacities of the preheating coil and reheating coil.

14- A building is to be heated by passing air over a heating coil. The air temperature at
heater outlet is 44C DBT.air is then humidified to satisfy the required inside design
condition.
