The spray density requirements shall comply with NFPA 15 requirements, this specification
and Project Specification.
Water spray fixed systems shall be specifically designed to provide for effective fire control,
extinguishment, prevention, or exposure protection.
The design of individual water spray fixed systems can vary considerably, depending on the
characteristics and nature of the hazard, the basic purpose of the spraying system, the
hazard, and wind/draft conditions. Because of these variations as well as the wide range of
nozzle spray characteristics, the design of water spray fixed systems for fire protection must
only be performed by experienced and specialized designers who thoroughly understand the
limitations as well as capabilities of such systems.
A study shall be made of the physical and chemical properties of the materials for which the

Revision 3
The design of fire protection systems shall be complete with all necessary accessories for
proper operation.
The water spray system shall be designed to activate automatically upon detection by the
automatic fire detection system.
The design of the water spray system shall be such that upon fire detection, the time required
to have water flowing through the hydraulically most remote nozzle in less than 90 seconds.
This requirement shall be verified by system testing at the time of installation and at
subsequent annual inspections.
There shall be a drain valve at the deluge valve and drain valves or 1/4 in. diameter weep
holes at piping low points.
System design and installation shall reflect high quality professional work that properly
accounts for practical maintenance concerns and aesthetic concerns, as well as meets the
design requirements.
The system and its components shall be suitably designed to withstand ambient temperature
changes, vibration, humidity, impact, clogging and corrosion.
Components within the protected spaces shall be designed to withstand the elevated
temperatures, which could occur during a fire.
The firewater pipe downstream of the deluge valves shall be a dry system.
Water discharge from water spray systems shall be controlled or contained, to prevent the
spread of fire where flammable or combustible liquids are present.
Systems shall be arranged for automatic operation with supplementary manual tripping
means provided, unless otherwise noted.
The piping system shall be sized in accordance with a hydraulic calculation technique to
ensure availability of flows and pressures required for correct performance of the system.
Nozzles and piping shall not prevent access to the protected equipment or exposure surface
for routine maintenance.
Each section or area served by a water spray system shall be capable of being isolated by
one water supply valve only. The stop valve in each section shall be readily accessible, and
its location clearly and permanently indicated.
A water spray system shall have two separate connections to two different sections of the
firewater distribution system.
The deluge system incorporating automatic valve opening shall be supplied with water from
two different sources. These two sources may be from the same reticulation system but there
shall be at least one fire main isolation valve between the two offtakes. One offtake shall be
routed to the deluge valve and then to the distribution pipework. The second offtake shall by-
pass the deluge valve and be connected directly to the distribution pipework. This second
source shall be isolated by a normally closed, manually operated, valve. Sufficient valving

shall be provided to permit maintenance to be carried out while sustaining water supplies to
the dry pipe system. Additionally provisions shall be made to perform testing. Facilities with a
fire alarm control panel shall include a low-pressure alarm and a control valve tamper switch.
Deluge valves shall be located at perimeter accessway or road sides at least 15 m from the
equipment or area to be protected and shall be grouped up to a maximum of four (4) deluge
valves per manifold header. An individual manual gate valve shall be provided upstream of
each deluge valve to allow resetting/isolation for maintenance.
Deluge valves for protection of pipe racks should be located adjacent to the piper rack on the
side with the least fire exposure hazard.
Deluge valves for protection of storage tanks shall be located outside of the respective tank
dike and protected against fire exposure.
Where the fire water quality necessitates frequent flushing and cleaning of the spray system,
a 3 inch branch with valve and 2½ inch hose coupling shall be provided at each fire water
supply side (downstream of the deluge valve).
All overhead piping shall be well supported and fixed to prevent deflection and vibrations.
When supported from grade, the supports shall be fire-proofed if structural redundancy
cannot be incorporated to withstand fire exposure.
Provisions should be made in the design of the system to perform testing and maintenance
since these systems are very susceptible to plugging either through corrosion or by debris.
The systems shall be designed in such a way that the required pressure for the best operation
of the spray nozzles is achieved by adequate dimensioning of the piping without the use of
restriction orifices.
In all cases a detailed layout shall be made of the equipment and areas to be protected on
which the arrangement of the spray nozzles shall be shown.
Water spray coverage for pumps meeting the above criteria shall extend 0.6 m (2 ft) beyond
the pump foundation pedestal around the perimeter.
Duration of the firewater supply shall meet the requirements of API 2001 – Fire Protection in
Refineries.
All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when available,
from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products manufactured out-
of-Kingdom must be approved by MARAFIQ. All products, system components and hardware
shall be in compliance with NFPA 15. Only listed materials and devices shall be used in the
installation of water spray systems. Components that do not affect system operation, such as
drain valves and signs, shall not be required to be listed.

exposed, but not less than 12.1 bar (175 psi). System components installed outside, or in the
presence of a corrosive atmosphere, shall be constructed of materials that will resist corrosion
or shall be suitably protected from corrosion.
The equipment, materials, valves and other devices installed shall be UL listed and/or FM
approved.

for actuation at 100 °C with the exception of those provided on furnaces or boilers
which shall be rated for 141 °C. The sprinkler heads circuit in a given area shall be
connected to the deluge valve for that area. Actuation of one or more sprinkler heads
due to heat shall result in depressurization of the sprinkler heads circuit, which inturn
will cause the actuation of the corresponding deluge valve.
Listed corrosion-proof pilot heads shall be used.
The pilot sprinklers (heat detectors) for water spray systems shall be supplied by 19
mm (3/4 inch) diameter pipe pressurized by firewater and located in accordance with
the following guidelines:
