TABLE OF CONTENTS
1.0 GENERAL
This specification contains the minimum design, installation, testing and commissioning
requirements for Automatic Preaction Systems. The Automatic Preaction Systems is to
assure the safety of the occupants in the building during a fire. The design of the Automatic
Preaction Systems shall conform to this specification and the complete Automatic Preaction
Systems shall be fully compatible to all components supplied.
2.0 REFERENCES
The referenced codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of quality for
materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these standards and the
text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.
The latest revision of the referenced codes and standards shall be used as a minimum guide.
In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and processes
conforming to one group of codes and standards.

3.0 DEFINITIONS
Refer to NFPA 13.

Health and Safety Conditions
Refer to NFPA 13.
Backflow preventers shall be used where potable water could be contaminated through
siphoning or back pressure from fire water piping.
In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be employed
throughout.
5.0 SUBMITTALS
The Contractor shall submit to MARAFIQ, the following items for review and approval before
commencing the work:
Product Data
Product data shall include principal dimensions, general construction and material for
each item intended to be furnished and installed.
Manufacturer's catalog data sheets shall be submitted for all sprinkler heads, alarm check
valves and all other accessories and system components.
Installation Instructions
Submit copies of the manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions for all
equipment. Include valve data and servicing instructions.
Shop Drawings
Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 13.
Submit Coordination Drawings
Superimposed drawings showing location of each sprinkler and all other activities
simultaneously.
Hydraulic Calculations
The hydraulic calculations for the entire automatic wet sprinkler system shall be by a
computer generated hydraulic calculation program, such as HASS, Elite, or Pipenet.
The calculations shall meet the requirements of NFPA 13 and shall be printed in a
standard NFPA format.
Hydraulic calculations shall be furnished when extending existing automatic wet
sprinkler systems.
As-Built Drawings
Clearly indicate sprinklers, systems, locations and symbols on the Shop Drawings
and As-built plans.
Clearly indicate valves, alarms and controls locations.
Identify any variation from Contract Drawings.

From an actuated switch in the control room through the use of a solenoid
valve in the pneumatic actuation line close to the preaction valve. Each
solenoid valve shall be provided with an isolation valve to allow maintenance
without isolation of associated preaction system/valve.
Each section or area served by an automatic preaction sprinkler system shall be capable of
being isolated by one water supply valve only. The stop valve in each section shall be readily
accessible, and its location clearly and permanently indicated.
Duration of the firewater supply shall meet the requirements of NFPA 13 and Project
Specifications.
Systems shall be arranged for automatic operation with supplementary manual tripping
means provided, unless otherwise noted.
9.0 PRODUCTS
All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when available,
from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products manufactured out-
of-Kingdom must be approved by MARAFIQ. All products, system components and hardware
shall be in compliance with NFPA 13. Only listed materials and devices shall be used in the
installation of automatic preaction sprinkler system. Components that do not affect system
operation, such as drain valves and signs, shall not be required to be listed.
System components shall be rated for the maximum working pressure to which they are
exposed, but not less than 12.1 bar (175 psi). System components installed outside, or in the
presence of a corrosive atmosphere, shall be constructed of materials that will resist corrosion
or shall be suitably protected from corrosion.
All products, system components and hardware shall be in compliance with the applicable
NFPA standards and the Project Specifications.
All valves, sprinklers, alarms and any additional fire fighting equipment shall be UL listed
and/or FM approved.
All fire department connections, couplings and thread types shall be fully coordinated and
matched with Local Fire Department requirements. No single thread type or coupling shall be
purchased before confirming and fulfilling Local Fire Department conditions.

9.5 Valves
All valves shall be specifically designed for the Fire Protection Service. All valves
shall meet or exceed NFPA 13; of type, construction and class.
Drain valves and test valves shall be UL listed and/or FM approved.
9.14 Alarms
Alarms shall be as per NFPA 13.
An alarm unit shall include a listed mechanical alarm, horn, or siren or a listed electric
gong, bell, speaker, horn, or siren.
Outdoor water motor-operated or electrically operated bells shall be weatherproofed
and guarded.
Outdoor alarms attachments shall be listed for outdoor use.

10.0 EXECUTION
All products and equipment shall be installed in accordance with MARAFIQ regulations,
applicable local codes and standards, the manufacturer's written installation instructions and
Project Specifications.
The automatic preaction sprinkler system shall be installed in accordance the applicable
NFPA standards.
Provisions shall be made to facilitate frequent inspection, testing and maintenance as
described in NFPA 25.
Protect all equipment and materials at all times.
Cover and protect equipment and materials from dirt, water, chemical or mechanical damage.
11.0 INSTALLATION
All materials and equipment used in the installation of the preaction system shall be new and
the latest design by the manufacturer.
All materials, valves and devices essential to successful system operation shall be UL Listed
and/or FM approved.
Components that do not affect system performance such as drain piping, drain valves and
signs are not required to be listed.
The preaction system components shall be compatible with and interconnected to the fire
alarm system.
System components installed outside, or in the presence of a corrosive atmosphere, shall be
constructed of materials that will resist corrosion or be suitably factory protected from
corrosion.
All fire department connection, coupling and thread type shall be fully coordinated and
matched with Local Fire Department requirements.
All valves shall meet or exceed NFPA 13; of type, construction and class.

11.2 Sprinklers
Sprinklers shall be listed for the specific hazard and type of system in which they shall
be used.
Sprinklers subject to corrosive environments shall be listed as corrosion-resistant.
Fire sprinklers shall be of one manufacturer throughout the building. No mixing of
sprinkler brands shall be permitted.
Keep sprinklers with protective caps or bulb shields contained within the caps or
shields during installation.
Take care not to damage the corrosion-resistant coating, when installing corrosion-
resistant sprinklers.
11.6 Cabinets
Provide sprinkler/pilot sprinkler cabinets near each preaction valve location.
11.7 Piping
Installed piping, valves and fittings shall meet or exceed the requirements of NFPA 13
and Project Specifications.
Make connections between underground and above-ground piping using an approved
transition piece strapped or fastened to prevent separation.
Do not extend water supply connection into a building or through a building wall
unless such connection is under the control of an outside listed indicating valve or an
inside listed indicating valve located near the outside wall of the building.
Close pipe openings with caps or plugs during installation.
Use pipes, fittings and hangers that resist corrosion; or apply a protective coating to
all unprotected exposed surfaces of the preaction system, where corrosive conditions
exist due to moisture or fumes from corrosive chemicals or both.
Provide identification signs at each valve to indicate its function and what it controls.
Provide hydraulic design information signage as required by NFPA 13.
Identification signs shall be permanently marked weatherproof metal sign secured
with corrosion-resistant wire, chain, or other approved means.
Signs shall be placed at the preaction/deluge valve supplying the corresponding
hydraulically designed area.
Each fire department connection to sprinkler systems shall be designated by a sign
having raised or engraved letters at least 25 mm (1 in.) in height on plate or fitting
reading service design.
The installation of signs required by NFPA 13 shall be verified.
12.0 PAINTING
Sprinklers and pilot sprinklers shall only be painted by the sprinkler manufacturer.
Painting of all exposed pipe, fittings and equipment shall be per MARAFIQ Painting
Specification.
14.0 COORDINATION
Installation of sprinklers shall be coordinated with other work including duct and electric fixture
installation to prevent sprinkler obstructions.
Coordinate the location, signage, keying and access of fire sprinkler shutoff and zone valves
with MARAFIQ.
Coordinate location of each sprinkler head with reflected ceiling plan, including lighting and
diffuser/grille layout.
Coordinate location of drains shown on plumbing drawings with requirements of a preaction
system.
16.0 TESTING
All new preaction systems shall be tested prior to the occupancy of the building or the area
the system is protecting.
Testing of the preaction system shall be in accordance with NFPA 13, 25, and Project
Specifications.
Any or all of the system component or portion which fail the specified tests shall be retested
after corrective measures have been taken.
All tests shall be witnessed by MARAFIQ representative.
18.0 CERTIFICATION
The Contractor shall prepare and submit a set of As-built Drawings and hydraulic calculations
of the system, maintenance and instruction bulletins, and the applicable parts of the
Contractor’s material and test certificates covering material and tests certifying that the work
has been completed and tested in accordance with plans and specifications.
