Reflexive Verbs Overview PDF
I. Reflexive Pronouns
2. A reflexive pronoun is a pronoun which is used as the direct object (D.O.) or indirect object
(I.O.) of a verb and which refers back to the subject of the sentence:
D.O. I. O.
Ich wasche mich. Ich wasche mir die Haare.
Du wäschst dich. Du wäschst dir die Haare.
Er (sie/es) wäscht sich. Er (sie/es) wäscht sich die Haare.
Note that only in the "ich" and "du" forms do reflexive pronouns differ in the accusative and dative cases (mich, mir; dich, dir).
Only in the "er / sie / es" and "sie / Sie" forms do the reflexive pronouns (sich) differ from the normal personal pronouns (ihn, ihm; sie, ihr; sie,
ihnen; Sie, Ihnen).
3. If the reflexive pronoun is the direct object of the verb, it is in the accusative case.
If the sentence already contains a direct object, most likely the reflexive pronoun will be the
indirect object, in the dative case:
D.O. I. O. D.O.
Ich wasche mich. Ich wasche mir die Haare.
(I’m washing myself.) (I’m washing for myself the hair.)
(I’m washing my hair.)
Ich ziehe mich an. Ich ziehe mir einen Pulli an.
(I’m dressing myself.) (I’m putting for myself a sweater on.)
(I’m getting dressed.) (I’m putting on a sweater.)
Ich lasse mich rasieren. Ich lasse mir den Bart rasieren.
(I’m having myself shaved.) (I’m having for myself the beard shaved.)
(I’m having my beard shaved.)
Ich schaue mich an. Ich schaue mir einen Film an.
(I’m looking at myself. (I’m looking at for myself a film.)

The reflexive pronouns function as direct objects:
A few reflexive verbs, however, have reflexive pronoun objects in the dative case.
The reflexive pronouns function as indirect objects:
* sich einbilden = to imagine (talk onesself into, delude onesself about) something that is not true. (Er bildet sich
ein, daß er ein großer Schauspieler ist.)
sich vorstellen = to imagine something (may or may not be true). (Kannst du dir vorstellen, daß es Leben auf
Mars gibt?)
