COMPREHENSIVE LISTENING REFLECTIONS


1st Periodic Test in Music: Part 1 of 2

 Rationale:
This is to extend the experience and immersion of students to the 5 20th Century Music genres:
Impressionism, Expressionism, Serialism, Avante Garde and Minimalism. The students choose 1
music selection per genre (with a total of 5 music selections) and write a critical and comprehensive
analysis and reflection about the chosen selection. Music selections are posted at the group page
in a compressed folder (.zip file) with 53 music selections to choose from.

 Elements of the Paper:


The format should follow a certain format and template (which is posted at the groups) and here
is the organization as follows:

Title Page -> Table of contents -> Reflection #1 -> Reflection #2 -> Reflection #3 -> Reflection #4 -> Reflection #5

Sample outputs and blank templates will be provided so the students will be guided. These will
posted at the group page.

 Reflection Proper (Reflection papers):


Each reflection should cater critical, analytical and personal interpretation of the listener
(students). Descriptive and narrative writings are encouraged to be done. There will be provided
guide questions which will help you make your reflections; also, citation of ‘time reference’ is
mostly important to provide evident and audible proof of listening experience. An example
would be:

….upon listening to Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphonie, you can hear the use
of an early digital keyboard called the Ondet Martenot. At 7:54, you can hear a
glissando of the instrument playing over the lavish harmony produced by the other
instruments thus making the composition very exotic and unique in the…….

The sample above is a citation of ‘time reference.’ Note: If it happens that if you cite a ‘time
reference’ and the description DOES NOT MATCH your reflection description, the WHOLE
PART 1 OF YOUR PERIODIC TEST WILL BE INVALID OR 0 IN SCORE.

MUSICAL PRODUCTION AND PERFORMANCE


1st Periodic Test in Music: Part 2 of 2

 Rationale:
The early pop culture genres inhibit and extend its influence to modern music of our era. The rock
and broadway genres became the avenues of new expression of the human soul and reflection of
society. AS A CLASS, they will produce a musical with their OWN storyline and choosing
combinations of rock and broadway songs as main highlight of the performance that should
match their storyline.

 Components of the Musical Play:


Original script
Musical production lasting from 15-20 mins ONLY
Choice of existing rock and broadway songs
Inclusion of each: 1 OPM & 1 Kundiman song (required)
Playbill (1 short synopsis of your musical and songs to be used; typewritten on a short bond paper)
Musical Poster (optional; additional 5 points each members of the class if you have)
Live music (preferably) OR canned music (recorded or minus one)

 Performance specifications:
This will be performed at the AVR (Audio-Visual Room) with a specific schedule per class (to be
announced)
A possible audience or group of people might be invited to watch your production
Designate specific roles or functions to your class. Maximize your number per class.

 Part I (Comprehensive Listening Reflections):
August 6 – St. Jerome
August 7 – St. Benedict, St. Luke, St. Thomas More, St. John Bosco, St. Maximilian Kolbe

 Part II (Musical Production and Performance): Venue- AVR; Time (tba)


August 13 – St. Jerome & St. John Bosco
August 14 – St. Maximilian Kolbe & St. Thomas More
August 15 – St. Luke & St. Benedict

 For Presidents and Vice Presidents: announce and plan this with your class
 Be sure that each member of the class knows this. This is equivalent to your PERIODIC TEST (150 points)
