One great woman who dedicated her life to the cause of science and to the welfare of
humanity is Madame Curie, the discoverer of radium. The mere statement that Madame Curie
discovered the radium will never tell the true story of the extraordinary courage,
determination and singleness of purpose that this noble woman showed in the face of extreme
poverty, pain and suffering that comes along with such condition.

Born Marja Sklowdaska in Warsaw, Poland on November, 7 1867, Marie Curie’s childhood
dream was to study science in Paris, but her father could not afford the expense for this. So
Marja took a job as a governess and saved a little money. With that little money she went
finally to Sorbonne, the University of Paris, to study science. Her father could send her only a
small amount and her life in the university was a disheartening experience in poverty and
hunger. She lived only on a bread, butter and tea, and she often fainted for lack of food. In
spite of all this she pursued her studies indomitably and she topped her class with Honours in
Physics and Mathematics.

It was at the university that she met a Frenchman, Pierre Curie, a brilliant but poor scientist.
Then they together began to work in a shabby laboratory. Soon, their friendship turned into
love and in less than a year, in July, 1895, they were married. The couple then took a flat in
Paris with scarcely any furniture in it except their books, a lamp, a white wooden table and

O God, forgive me when I whine

I have two legs, the world is mine

And then I stopped to buy some sweets

The lad who sold them ha d such charm

I talked with him, he seemed so calm, and if I were late, it would do no harm,

And as I left he said to me “I thank you, you have been so kind”

It’s nice to talk with folks like you. You see I’m blind

O God, forgive me when I whine

I have two eyes, the world is mine

Later walking down the street, I saw a child with eyes of blue

He stood and watched the others play; it seemed he knew not what to do

SECTION IV: NON – TEXTUAL PASSAGE – 15 Marks

We often hear this statement that “many of our young people spend more time before their
TV sets, than they do in their classrooms or with their textbooks.” A bit exaggerated though it
may sound, it is nearly true. Our teenagers are being considerably influenced by the
electronic media, particularly the TV. The television has become the single most powerful
influence in the lives of many of our youngsters today. Too often this happens to us much
before we realise it ourselves.

I am in no way trying to deny the many advantages of TV, or minimise its manifold
contributions to our world. On the other hand, I consider TV as one of the greatest scientific
achievements of our times, bringing people closer than ever before.

Television’s use of modern satellite technology brings today even the remotest regions of the
world to us in seconds, making the world a small global village. As we know, television also
provides us with fuller and more impressive coverage of current events than any other media.

The TV does serve, in addition, as a medium of education as well as entertainment. Besides

helping us to learn subjects taught in school, college in greater depth, it enables us to see and
appreciate from close quarters the wonders of God’s creation in any part of the world.
