1.1 Overview
The IPU1000 series employs high-frequency PWM technology and a microprocessor that
controls all diagnostics and operations. The key features of the series are modularity, small
size, light weight, parallel capability, redundancy, high efficiency, high reliability, excellent
dynamic and static behavior and silent operation.
Each inverter occupies 9.5" horizontally and is 1U in height, so that each 19" 1U shelf can
house 2 inverter modules. Several shelves can be stacked to form a system with greater
capacity.
Conversion at high frequency results in smaller components that can be contained in a small
unit. Synchronization is made purely digitally employing advanced circuitry.
The front panel is designed for a simple and efficient operation using an LED display that
indicates the unit load level and any exceptional conditions.
The IPU1000 inverter can be used as a stand-alone unit; alternatively, multiple units (installed
in a special shelf) can be operated in parallel mode to enhance power capacity, as well as to
achieve (N+1) redundancy.
Figure 1 on page 2 is a block diagram of the internals of the IPU1000. Figure 2 on page 2
shows the unit in stand-alone operation. Figure 3 on page 3 show multiple units in a parallel
configuration, which provides higher current than a single unit.
The inverters are connected to an external 19" static-switch unit (model STSW-1U), to
provide a bypass path to an alternative ac source (see Figure 4 on page 4), and at the same
time making possible N+1 (or greater) redundancy.
A digital phase locked loop system synchronizes the inverter to the parallel bus to provide
paralleling of several modules together. A low-power dc-dc block powers all circuits.
Parallel mode: The units wait for each other to initialize up before supplying output, and
begin to supply output together. This mode is appropriate when the peak system load is
higher than that of a single module.
Independent mode: Each unit begins to provide power to the load immediately after its
initialization, without waiting for the other units to complete their initialization. If the peak load
is greater than the output of a single module, a static switch can be included in the system.
The static switch waits until all the units have initialized before providing power to the load.
Using a static switch with units in independent mode has the advantage over parallel mode in
that it provides redundancy capability – "extra" (redundant) IPU1000 units can be included in

the system so that if one or more units fail, the system will still be able to provide sufficient
power for the peak load.
The above operation modes - parallel or independent - are determined by internal jumper
settings set at the factory. Your sales representative will help you determine the most
appropriate option for your needs.

Figure 9 below illustrates the system's main components. Figure 10 shows the main circuit breakers
and input and output terminal connections.

3. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. On the electrical board, switch OFF the bypass ac input circuit breaker and the dc input
circuit breaker, and verify that there is no voltage present at the output of the circuit breakers.
2. Unscrew two screws and remove the panel covering the front circuit breakers.
3. Locate the ac output, bypass ac input, and dc input terminals on the distribution panel (see
Figure 10).
4. On the inside floor of the system, behind the rear panel, is a ground screw. Connect this
ground screw securely to the building ground circuit.
5. Connect the DC INPUT, BYPASS AC INPUT and OUTPUT wires to their respective
terminals.
6. Screw the front panel back into place.
7. Switch on the external AC protection device that supplies the bypass input.
8. Switch on the INPUT BYPASS circuit breaker on the system's front panel.
Verify that the indicators on the Static Switch’s panel are in the following mode:
• IN2 - green
• IN1 - red
• LOAD ON IN2 - red
• LOAD ON IN1 - is unlit
• SYNC - is unlit
• ALARM - red, sound alarm is presented
9. Switch on the external dc input circuit breaker.
Verify that the IPU1000 inverter(s) starts normally.
Verify that after about 10 or 15 seconds the indicators on STATIC SWITCH panel register as
follows:
• IN2, IN1, LOAD ON IN1, SYNC - green
• LOAD ON IN2, ALARM - unlit
10. Push the IN1/IN2 button and verify that the output is transferred to the IN2 (bypass input).
11. Push the button again and verify that the output is reconnected to the IN1 (the inverter).
12. Switch on the system's OUTPUT circuit breaker, operate the load and ensure that the system
is working properly.

4. OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS
Switching the unit off and on reinitializes the microprocessor. This can be done in the rare
case that the microprocessor "freezes" for any reason and the inverter stops functioning.
In the event that the IPU1000 powers itself off automatically due to a prolonged overload or
output short-circuit, it is necessary to press the on/off button for the inverter to resume
operation after resolution of the overload or short-circuit.
When the input dc voltage rises to >51 Vdc (or >25.5 Vdc) the IPU1000 restarts itself. This
hysteresis of 9 V (4.5 V) between shutdown level and restart level eliminates "hiccup"
behavior of the system when the input voltage is in the vicinity of the shutdown level.

PART FUNCTION
IN2 LED (green / red) Green when the bypass voltage and frequency are normal.
Otherwise red.
IN1 LED (green / red) Green when the inverter voltage is normal. Otherwise red
LOAD ON IN2 LED (red) Lit when the load is connected to the BYPASS. Flashes
during the check before the load transfer to the INVERTER.
Unlit when the load is connected to the INVERTER
LOAD ON IN1 LED (green) Lit when the load is connected to the INVERTER
SYNC LED (green) Lit when the BYPASS and INVERTER signal phases are
synchronized
ALARM LED (red) Lit when at least one of the following fault conditions is
presented:
• Load connected to the Bypass
• Bypass voltage or frequency is out of limit
• Inverter voltage is out of limit
• Inverter and Bypass are not synchronized
NOTE: In all these cases an audible alarm sounds.
IN1 / IN2 pushbutton Transfers the load between IN1 (the inverter) and IN2 (the
alternate input source)
ALARM OFF pushbutton Toggles sound alarm.
NOTE: If the Alarm Off button was activated, the alarm
resounds when a fresh system fault occurs.
RESET pushbutton Resets microcontroller. I Use only when the Static Switch unit
is not responding properly.

To eliminate abnormal transfer condition, the STATIC SWITCH unit locks the load on
BYPASS if seven transfers occurred during 1MIN. In this case, a frequently
interrupted sound alarm is given. To take out the unit from this situation, push
INV/BYP button twice, transfer counter is be initialized.
Table 4 below lists and describes the different audible alarms:
