Use this worksheet to research ADA and Accessibility. This information will be used later to create a
presentation. You may type your responses directly under the questions. This will expand the page
length. Make sure to delete the extra spaces following your responses before saving your document.

To Save click File in the upper left corner. Click Save As. Choose the location to save your document
(make sure to remember where you saved it). When prompted name the document
“yourlastname_adaworksheet”. Upload the file using the Upload link for this assignment.

1. Describe what the American with Disabilities Act is and why it is important.

The American with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against those with disabilities. The ADA covers
areas like employment, transportation, public accommodations, communication, and access to state and
local government programs ad services. The ADA protects the rights of employees and those seeking
employment. The ADA is important because it protects every human from discrimination if they happen to
have a disability or gain a disability during their lifetime. This person will have the same rights and
opportunities as an able-bodied person in any place provided to the general public.

2. Describe what Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act is and why it is important.

The Title ll of the American with Disabilities Act covers nondiscrimination on the basis of disability in state
and local government services. This protects individuals with disabilities in all programs, activities, and
services of public entities in any/all state and local government departments or agencies. It is important
because it properly outlines the administrative process that has to be followed for making modifications to
those with disabilities, so that they will not be discriminated against. This title is regulated and enforced by
the U.S. Department of Justice.

3. List at least 5 examples of types of disabilities covered by ADA and Title II.

The ADA covers visual disabilities, mobility disabilities, communication (oral) disabilities, sitting
disabilities, and reading disabilities.

4. Describe what Assistive Technology is as it related to students and learning. Provide at least two
examples.

Assistive Technology provides students with learning enhancement by any device, software, or
equipment to work around any of their learning or disability challenges. Some examples of Assisted
Technology would be things like hearing aids, voice recognition software, and closed captioning.

5. Describe how captioning adds to accessibility to YouTube videos and why it is important.

Captioning allows people with a hearing disability to understand the video being played by reading it. This
allows the student or individual to still understand and retain the information being given.

6. Describe what an “alt” tag is and how it adds accessibility to web pages and Microsoft Office
documents.

The “alt” tab specifies an alternate text if the image cannot be displayed due to the individual using a
screen reader. The image will be described to the reader who cannot view it.

7. Describe why blinking/flashing content in documents should be avoided for accessibility reasons.

Content that flashes and flickers can trigger seizers in individuals who are susceptible.

8. Provide information on at least 2 of the following:


a) Describe what the “Read&Write” Chrome web browser extension is and how it helps students
with disabilities.

Read&Write is a comprehensive literacy toolbar capable of reading text aloud, highlighting


text, and exporting to an audio format, just to name a few of its features.

b) Describe what the “crxMouse” Chrome web browser extension is and how it helps students
with disabilities.

CrxMouse is a browser that allows you to create shortcuts while using the mouse.

c) Describe what “Sip-and-Puff” technology is and how it helps students with disabilities.

d) Describe what “Ghotit” technology is and how it helps students with disabilities.
