Purpose of PMBOK® Guide

• Application of appropriate knowledge, processes, skills, tools, and

techniques can have a significant impact on project success.

• The PMBOK® Guide identifies that subset of the project management

body of knowledge generally recognized as good practice.

• It also provides and promotes a common vocabulary within the project

management profession for discussing, writing, and applying project
management concepts.

• The Project Management Institute Code of Ethics and Professional

Conduct is specific about the basic obligation of responsibility, respect,
fairness, and honesty.
Project Management Body Of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide)

PMBOK recognizes 5 basic process groups and 10 knowledge areas typical of

almost all projects. The basic concepts are applicable to projects, programs and
operations.

The five basic process groups are:

Initiating 10 Knowledge Areas
Planning 1. Integration
Executing 2. Scope

Controlling and Monitoring 3. Schedule

Closing. 4. Cost
5. Quality
6. Resources
Processes are described in terms of: 7. Communication
- Inputs (documents, plans, designs, etc.) 8. Risk
- Tools and Techniques 9. Procurement
(mechanisms applied to inputs)
10. Stakeholder Management
- Outputs (documents, products, etc.)
PM Process Groups

Process Groups and their constituent processes are guides for applying appropriate project management knowledge and
skills during the project.
1. Initiating Process Group
Defines and authorizes the project or project phase
2. Planning Process Group
Defines and refines the objectives, plans the course of action to be taken to attain the objectives and scope undertaken
3. Executing Process Group
Integrates people and other resources to carry out the project management plan for the project
4. Monitoring and Controlling Process Group
Regularly measure and monitor the progress to identify variance from project management plan so that corrective actions can
be taken to meet project objectives
5. Closing Process Group
Formalize acceptance of the project and brings the project or project phase to orderly end
PMBOK 10 Knowledge Areas
1. Project integration management includes tasks that hold the whole project together, processes combine,
unify and coordinate the various project management activities within the five process groups.

2. Project Scope Management –processes that ensure the project includes all the work required, and only the
work required, to complete the project successfully.

3. Project Schedule Management –processes that manage the timely completion of the project

4. Project Cost Management–processes that plan, estimate, fund, manage, and control costs so the project
can be completed within the approved budget

5. Quality –processes for incorporating the organization’s quality policy regarding planning, managing and
controlling project and product quality requirements in order to meet stakeholders’ expectations

6. Resource–processes that identify, acquire, and manage the resources needed for the successfully completion
of the project.

of project information

8. Risk–processes for planning risk management, the identification, analysis, and monitoring of risks on a
project, and the implementation of risk responses.

9. Procurement–processes necessary to purchase or acquire products, services, or results needed from outside
the project team.

10.Stakeholder–processes required to identify stakeholders, to analyze their expectations and impact on the
project, and to develop management strategies for effectively engaging stakeholders in decisions that affect
the project.

PMP Exam Question Types

Questions on the PMP® certification exam are designed to test your analytical
abilities, application experience, and general project management knowledge. The
types of questions you will see on the exam will fall into following general
categories.

Knowledge Based:
These questions will identify how well you have remembered the PMBOK terms and processes.

Situational:
A scenario or situation will be presented to you in which must analyze the question and choose the best
answer based on your experience, analysis, and knowledge. Many test takers state that the predominant
percentages of questions on the exam are situational.

More than one right answer:

Frequently, a test question will have two or more correct answers; however there will always be one answer
that is more correct that the others. In this situation it is usually simple to eliminate at least two of the
answers. Focus your attention on what the project manager needs to do next.
PMP Exam Question Types

Extraneous information:
PMI is famous for the wordy multi-paragraph question, loaded with misdirection and nonessential
information that has nothing to do with the actual question. When encountering such questions for the first
time, read the answer set and the final paragraph first - this is usually the place where the actual question is
contained.

Something you never heard of:

Don’t be surprised to see a question containing something you never seen before. The field of project
management changes on a daily basis and the tools and techniques used by the project manager are
expanding seemingly at a geometric rate. Take your best guess and move on.

Mathematical:
Expect to see anywhere from 8 to 13 questions involving formula computations. Earned Value, PERT or
questions involving standard deviation are typical computation questions.
PMP Exam Question Types

Diagrams:
You may be asked to interpret a graph or construct a precedence diagram from instructions.

Correct Answer to a different question:

You will sometimes see answers that may be correct statements by themselves, but do not answer the question.

Double negatives:
A number of questions are designed to be deliberately confusing (“which of the following would NOT be the
LEAST likely choice to make…”), which is another way of saying; “what would be your most likely choice”.

Whats a New in PMBOK 7th Edition
• The exam is changing because our jobs as project managers have
changed.

• Every 3-5 years, PMI® conducts research to understand how the

profession has progressed, the impact of emerging trends, and how
the responsibilities of project managers have changed. The last
round of this research was conducted in 2015 and resulted in the
current PMP exam content outline.

• Subject matter experts from leading organizations around the world

have worked with PMI to define the PMP of the future. The result of
this research was the publication of a new PMP Examination Content
Outline in June of 2019, and on 2 January 2021, this new outline will
lead to an updated PMP exam.

Whats a New in PMBOK 7th Edition

What is changing in PMBOK Seventh Edition in one sentence, I would say

PMBOK 7th Edition will be based on principles rather

than processes and it will be much shorter than the
current edition.

The Process-Based Standard

• All previous editions of the PMBOK Guide have been process-based, meaning that the
primary, fundamental building blocks were processes, with their inputs and outputs
connecting them and creating an integrated network that can be effective in projects.

The Principle-Based Standard

• The principles-oriented (outcome-oriented) approach describe the most effective way
of carrying out project activities regardless of the delivery method, management
methodology, processes across any industry to manage and deliver projects.
TWO FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS INFLUENCING CHANGES

Value Delivery System

Value Delivery System is the holistic system through which projects
deliver business value. Business value, as conceived by Peter
Drucker, is the tangible and intangible benefits received by
customers, employees, and partners of the business. And projects are
the main vehicle that delivers business value by achieving business
objectives of the organization.
TWO FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS INFLUENCING CHANGES

Project Delivery Principles

These are the whats and whys of project management that guide the
thinking and behavior of people involved in project delivery
1. Be a diligent, respectful, and caring steward
2. Build a culture of accountability and respect
3. Engage stakeholders to understand their interests and needs
4. Focus on value
5. Recognize and respond to systems’ interactions
6. Motivate, influence, coach, and learn
7. Tailor the delivery approach based on context
8. Build quality into processes and results
9. Address complexity using knowledge, experience, and learning
10.Address opportunities and threats
11.Be adaptable and resilient
12.Enable change to achieve the envisioned future state
Standard for Project Management focus has shifted.

The 2021 PMP Exam Changes explained

In a nutshell: the current PMP exam is based on 5 performance domains, but starting 2 January 2021
the exam will be based on 3 domains. These domains are defined in the PMP Exam Content Outline
(ECO).

DOMAIN CURRENT ECO 2015 NEW ECO 2019

Domain I Initiating People
Domain II Planning Process
Domain III Executing Business Environment
Domain IV Monitoring & Controlling
Domain V Closing
The 2021 PMP Exam Changes explained
• The new PMP exam will require candidates to have experience in and
answer questions from three domains:
– People (42) – Emphasizing the skills and activities associated with effectively
leading a project team

– Process (50) – Reinforcing the technical aspects of managing a project

– Business Environment (8) – Highlighting the connection between projects and

organization strategy

• Within each of these three domains the exam content outline lists Tasks (what we
project managers do) and Enablers (the actions we take to complete the tasks).

Currently we have the Pattern - The new changes will bring in something like this –
Domain – Initiating Domain – People
Percentage questions – 13% Percentage questions – 42%
Task – Task 1 Task – Task 1
Definition – Perform project assessment based upon Title – Manage Conflict
available information, lessons learned from previous Enabler –
projects, and meetings with relevant stakeholders in order Interpret the source and stage of the conflict
to support the evaluation of the feasibility of new products Analyze the context for the conflict
or services within the given assumptions and/or Evaluate/recommend/reconcile the appropriate
constraints. conflict resolution solution
Distribution of questions sliced and diced
First, we now have more clarity on exactly how many questions will appear across each of the 3
new domains and across project management methodologies (Predictive, Agile, and Hybrid).

* All percentages and question numbers are out of 200 questions you encounter on the exam.

*Question distribution % Predictive (50% = 100 Q) Agile (23% = 46 Q) Hybrid (27% = 54 Q)

People
21% = 42 questions 10% = 20 questions 11% = 22 questions
(42% = 84 Q)
Process
25% = 50 questions 11% = 22 questions 14% = 28 questions
(50% = 100 Q)
Business Environment
4% = 8 questions 2% = 4 questions 2% = 4 questions
(8% = 16 Q)

**PMI also clearly states that About half of the examination will represent predictive
project management approaches and the other half will represent agile or hybrid
approaches.
Key Impacts of the 2021 PMP Exam Change?

• The New PMP Exam Cover the Larger areas of Contents.

70% of the current exam is now contained within Domain II:
Process, and that the other two domains - People and
Business Environment - contain largely new content.

• Agile is an Embedded - Half of the questions on the new

exam will be about agile and hybrid approaches.

• The new PMP Exam will be Little Tough with so many new
topics and methods that have been added to the exam.

• Training must goes Long; Still 35 Contact Hours are required

but in-depth exam prep course will be significantly longer.
