Now for a Poll!
What your biggest challenges with ATP
testing?
Select all that apply:
A. User training (e.g., swabbing
consistency)
B. Managing sampling plans
C. Manually recording data
D. Capability to analyze the data to make
improvements
E. Other
Hygiene monitoring generates data to determine if a surface has been cleaned sufficiently
and enables the high-risk decision to be made to start food production

Now for a Poll!
How do you verify cleaning and sanitation?
Select all that apply:
A. ATP detection
B. Microbiological tests
C. Visual inspection
D. We currently do not have a verification
program

A Note About RLU Readings
• The 3M Clean Trace System does not produce “zero” RLU results
• Blank swabs will produce low RLUs levels
≤ 35 RLU for AQF100
≤ 20 RLU for AQT200
≤ 25 RLU for UXL100
• True reading is shown – the algorithm does not hide background RLUs
• Allows for greater ability to track and trend your results for different surfaces,
as it is not possible to see trends when your results are only 0 and 1

Components of the 3M™ Clean-Trace™
Hygiene Monitoring and Management System
22
23
1 2
Do not touch the swab near the swab bud
Apply downward
pressure
3 4
Flat surface: 10 cm x 10 cm / 4 in x 4 in
Irregular surface: Ensure good coverage
Rotate swab during sampling
Consistency is key!
24
Activate and Read 3M™ Clean-Trace™ Swabs
• Return swab to the tube after sample collection Place the swab immediately
• Press the handle down to activate into the luminometer to measure the
light production
• Shake side-to-side for at least 5 seconds
Results are reported in ~8-9
seconds
25
Apply pressure on swab & rotate ✘ Touch the swab or surface tested with hands
Swab consistently on area sampled for test point ✘ Swab through puddles as extractant present
and method for collection in the swab tip will be washed away
After activation and shaking side to side,
✘ Swab hot surfaces – let them cool and dry
measure swab immediately
Remove used swabs from the instrument ✘ Lay swabs down after activating
26
27
Guidance for Swabbing
Best practice: Between the cleaning and sanitation step
When to swab? • Sanitizer does not work on a dirty surface
• Swabbing after cleaning reduces the risk of sanitizer interference
Use of swabs Swabs were designed for versatility because not all facilities
after sanitation have flexibility to swab in-between cleaning and sanitizing
• AOAC PTM showed that there was limited interference by residual
sanitizers (~200 ppm)

3M™ Clean-Trace™ Luminometer LM1
Key Functions
• Contains all sampling plans and points
• Contains randomized sampling points
• Reads the amount of light emitted by the swab
• Stores Relative Light Unit (RLU) results until syncing with software
• Enable the recording of additional test types (visual inspection,
microbial, allergen)
• Displays picture of test point to enable sampling consistency
• Allows users to select pre-defined comments after a test
• Allows re-test if necessary
• Syncs with software using USB, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth

• Matrices: Stainless steel, ceramic and plastic surfaces
• Variety of sources of ATP including foods as well as
relevant microorganisms
• Key conclusions:
• Minimal interference with common sanitizers used
in the food industry (~200 ppm)
• Detection of ATP from included sources of ATP
(food and microbial)
• Low variability in RLU values over time (up to 2 http://members.aoac.org/aoac_prod_imis/AOAC_Docs/
