The Beast of Bodmin Moor

For 30 years or more, an unidentified pitched scream.’ His neighbour, Mrs

‘Beast’ has been terrorising the
inhabitants and killing livestock in
Cornwall, south-west England. Some
think the mysterious creature is a
puma; others that it is a leopard or a
panther.
It was allegedly (reportedly) first
spotted in 1983 and there have been at
least 60 reported sightings ever since.
Mr. Jones, a local farmer, claims that it
has ‘huge yellow eyes and a high-

Gerrans, came face to face with it. ‘It
jumped over that fence and went into
that wood. I reckon it was about 3 feet
long with brown fur.’
So, has there been any hard evidence?
A skull with large fangs was found in
the River Fowey. The skull measured
about 10cm long by 18cm wide. The
Natural History Museum in London
was consulted and an expert concluded
that this was the skull of a young male

leopard that had not died in Britain. It
turned out to be part of an imported
leopard-skin rug!
What has the government done about
the reported sightings? In 1995, Charlie
Wilson, a wildlife biologist from the
Agriculture Ministry was sent to
investigate. He said, ‘we are not
doubting the honesty and sincerity of
the people, but if we are going to submit
a report and do something, we need to
see hard evidence.’
Some six months and many thousands
of pounds later, he wrote a report that
claimed there was no ‘verifiable
evidence’ of any large cats roaming the
moor. Experts examined photos and
video evidence and came to the
conclusion that the ‘beast’ was a black
cat about 30cm in height.
Local people are not convinced by the
report, and the sightings continue.
Henry Warren was taking pictures of
his new house when he ‘saw something
run across the field’ in front of his lens.
‘It was absolutely massive and was
hopping up and down like a large cat.
There was no way it was a dog or a fox.
So, if big cats roam Bodmin Moor,
where do local people think they have
come from? Some believe they could
have escaped from a zoo or private
collection and have not been reported
because they were imported illegally.
Others believe it is a species of wildcat
that became extinct in Britain more
than 100 years ago.
Whatever you believe, should you find
yourself alone on Bodmin Moor as
night is falling, you can be forgiven for
looking around to make sure the ‘Beast’
is not stalking you!

TRAFFIC JAM: A NUISANCE ON ROADS

Yesterday on 23/10/2019, the main highway connecting the two major suburbs of our
city witnessed a real chaos in the form of a traffic jam in which thousands of people
were caught for several hours.

It was around 5 pm in the evening and the office goers, the school buses of various
schools and traders along with many others were returning from the busy route. The
traffic was running smoothly but suddenly the vehicles came to an abrupt halt. There
was utter confusion among all. The traffic was not moving even an inch. Soon anger
erupted among many. Patience slowly melted and there was argument, heated talks,
and even several came out from their vehicles in anger. Fuming, everyone was vexed
to know the cause of that traffic jam. People were in hurry to reach their destination
but not even one traffic police officer could be seen in the vicinity. Then some excited
youngsters jumped into the scene and began clearing the scene. They reached at the
place where the halt had begun. A badly wounded person was seen unconscious in a

damaged car. Situation was understood and immediately an ambulance was called by
onlookers.
Within no time, the ambulance arrived followed by the police too. It took two hours to
clear the traffic. But finally the injured person was taken in the ambulance, the
damaged car was picked by the police and the traffic moved.

Now imagine that you read this news report. You decide
to write an email or letter to the newspaper as you also
witnessed the whole incident. In your letter that will be
published as a newspaper report, you say what you
think about the events reported in the newspaper story.
