Abstract-

The main objective of my research was to find out the priority of football fans in NSU. I also aim

to figure out whether they find club football more exciting or not and does watching club football

games affected on the behavior for following world cup. This study told as that people enjoy

club football games rather than world cup and international matches. They do fell connected

when they watch club football because it’s more regular and it has become their part of life. The

players are the best players and the games are full of excitement. Gullaume (2016) notes “The

game isn’t competitive and the players don’t want to be injured” (para 3). However people were

confused about their priorities because they do some things which aren’t logical but they do it

because they love but when the time is to publishing the result they got confused. It happened

during the study, people feel that international matches should be more exciting but they do

prefer to watch club football. This study thoroughly uncovered the feelings of the football fans of

NSU.

Introduction-

When I was child I used to see different kinds of flags flying during the world cup. Not far away

in 2014 I had felt the craziness among the people for the football world cup. But this year I

haven’t seen as much as craziness as I saw before. There are hardly any flags in the roofs or

people supporting their teams passionately. Wood (2014) said it has a great love of sports and is

their main form of entertainment (para 1). Now people see a lot of club football matches and

they also follow it seriously. These club football games are so frequent and exiting that people

don’t feel same for the world cup matches. Before 90’s football was very popular among the

people. They tried to follow the FIFA World Cup and the people of Bangladesh were one of the

enthusiast followers. After the cable channels arrived vastly people started to watch club football

games and that became part of their life. As there is always somethings happening in the club

football world, they don’t feel bore and try to relate those things. They support their club no

matter which country player they have. They feel that their club have the best players in the

contrary they feel that the national team doesn’t always have better players. However there are a

lot people who don’t watch football games at all but try to follow world cup as it has become a

festive throughout the world. People sometimes compared to their religious festival and

sometimes they consider this as big as EID (Mark, 2010, para 8). We cannot neglect their

feelings as they are also helping us to have this event successful one. Sam (2014) stated that

“The World Cup inspires interest in people who don’t normally watch football” (para 15). So it

has a new significance level.

5

I want to research why their excitement for international tournaments has decreased. I have

noticed that people now a days don’t care about their national team support. They only think that

how well their club doing. For this reason they are not excited about world cup as it is not game

between the clubs. They prefer Champions league rather than FIFA World Cup. Football fans of

NSU do have some perspectives. It is important to find out these perspectives.

Research Questions-

In my research I plan to investigate does the excitement decreased because of the increasing

viewers of club football. My research will address the following research questions:

1. What is the most popular sport in Bangladesh?

2. Is Bangladesh a football crazy nation?

3. How do people watch club footballs in Bangladesh?

4. Is club football better than international tournaments?

5. Do people have the same feelings for international football tournaments?

6. Why the World Cup Will Always Be Bigger Than the Champions League?

Hypothesis-

When I was child I used to see different kinds of flags flying during the world cup. Not far away

in 2014 I had felt the craziness among the people for the football world cup. But this year I

people supporting their teams passionately. Now people see a lot of club football matches and

they also follow it seriously. These club football games are so frequent and exiting that people

don’t feel same for the world cup matches. After cable channels arrival people started watching

club footballs and the excitements for the world cup started decreasing. People feel connected

towards these games so they becoming rational rather than emotional choosing club over world

cup and international games.

Hypothesis –

The excitement for the world cup has decreased because of the increasing viewers of club

football games.

Research Methodology-

For my primary research, I will conduct a survey on NSU students. I hope to have a sample size

of about 24 to 30 people. I will also design a questionnaire with different types of questions to

get a range of useful data which will help me to answer my research questions. As for my

secondary research, I plan to use to resources of the library and will also consult several books

and websites regarding photography. I also hope to do some reading on the subtext through

academic journals, blogs, articles, and more.

Data presentation and analysis-

In order to collect sufficient data about the priorities of football fans in NSU I hosted a survey

questioning various aspects on my topic. The collected data helped me to draw conclusions about

my research topic. The questions were completed by a group of 24 students of whom there were

12 male and 12 female. The data collected is presented and analyzed in the following pages.

This graph shows that what people’s favorite sport is. Majority portion of the people said that

their favorite sport is football, some of them goes with cricket, a very few people don’t have their

preferred answer here. No one’s favorite sport is tennis and hockey. 75% people whose favorite

sport is football is important for our research.

2. Do you like club football games?

HATE TO LOVE (1-5)

1 2 3 4 5

My second question was about their affection towards club football, whether they love it or not. I

found some specific answers. In this chart we can see that 50% of the people love this game very

much and 20% people do love it but not as strongly as possible. 25% of the people feel that they

are neutral. They don’t love it but they don’t hate it also. 5% people do hate this game.

How often do they watch

This bar graph shows us the information about the people how often do they watch club football

games. As we are conducting the survey to determine the priority, so it is necessary to know that

do our interviews watch club football or not. We can see in the graph that about 60% of the

people watch club football regularly. 10% of them try to follow them regularly and 12% of them

try to follow once in a month. 18% of them don’t actually into club football. So we can see that a

large portion of people watch club football.

We needed to distinguish between club football and international matches. So I asked two

questions to know that in which sector they follow most. In this survey I found out that people

are more into world cup rather than other matches. In this graph we can see that maximum

people around 45% watch only world cup. 15% of the people watch particular tournament which

they like. Only 5% people try to follow this in a month and last one is 35% try to be regular with

international matches.

5. How much exciting club football to you?

NOT EXCITING-VERY MUCH EXCITING (1-5)

1 2 3 4 5

This pie chart tried to explain the excitement of the football fans of NSU. The scale is from one

to five from not exciting to very much exciting. So if any one chooses five it means club football

is very much exciting to him or her and if she/she chooses one it means it is not exciting to him

at all. So we can see that a large portion of people found it very much exciting. It’s around 44%

and 20% people think it’s exciting but not up to the mark. 17% people feel neutral. They don’t

think it’s exciting and they also don’t think it’s not exciting. Lastly 13% people feel like club

football is not exciting at all.

6. How much exciting international football to you?

NOT EXCITING-VERY MUCH EXCITING

1 2 3 4 5

This pie chart tried to explain the excitement of the football fans of NSU. The scale is from one

to five from not exciting to very much exciting. So if any one chooses five it means international

football is very much exciting to him or her and if she/she chooses one it means it is not exciting

to him at all. The doughnut graph is giving us some information. This graph is showing us that

around half of the people think that the games are very much exciting. They enjoy them very

much. 27% find it exciting but it could improve. 17% people think it’s neutral. They find it

exciting sometimes and sometimes not. In the end 5% people think that this game is boring and

not exciting at all.

14

7. Which one do you care most?

CLUB VS NATIONAL TEAM

Club Seccess National Team Glory

The 7th question is one of the important questions for my research. This question asked about

your priority. People had to choose one, they care for club football or they care for national team

glory and 80% of the people choose the club success. However 20% people care for national

team glory. This graph accurately differentiate the priority of the football fans of NSU.

Opinion

This question actually directly related to my hypothesis. This graph tried to show us do people

find club football games more exciting than international tournaments. The options were from

strongly agree to strongly disagree. In the graph we can see that around 30% of people strongly

agrees with the statement and 40% of the people agrees with the statement. In other words

people do find cub football games more exciting than international tournaments. 20% of people

were neutral, they don’t seems to care about it. 10% people think that international games are

more exciting than club football as they disagreed with the statement and lastly no one strongly

disagreed with the statement.

We are in the question of this survey. And in the last graph it tried to tell us that do people think

that after watch club football games their interest for world cup decreased. 20% of the people

strongly agreed with it and 50% of the people agreed with it. In other words this 70 percent

people think that after watching club football games their interest for world cup decreased. 20%

people are neutral with this statement. And lastly 10% of the whole disagreed with the statement

that they think the interest for the world cup hasn’t decreased. No one strongly disagreed with

the statement.
17

Summary of research findings-

The data I collected by doing the survey matched with my hypothesis. I tried to see the priority

of the football fans of NSU whether they like club football more than international football or not

and for watching the club football do there excitement for the world cup decreased. Among all

the information and comments we can conclude that people do prefer watching club football

regularly and they feel very much connected to it. They think that the international games are

more prestigious than the club football but as a viewer the club football games are much more

interesting and exciting than the international football. There are a lot of gossips and rumors for

the club football and people enjoy it whether they actually don’t know many of the international

team players.

When I did my secondary research I found out that it was very much known topic and people

have a lot of debate in this topic. Different country people have different perspective about this

thing.  “There is something romantic and emotional about international success” (Sam, 2016,

para 4) .In the countries where club football is much established they prefer the club football

more rather than the countries where the national football is more established. Interesting region

is where both are established in the same amount. It was difficult for them to come to a

conclusion.

I had some difficulties doing this research because half of the sample were female and they are

not into football. So their answer shifted the graphs a little bit. If I had some proper football fans

than I would think the percentage that people agreed with the hypothesis will much more than
18

now. Females sometimes don’t care about this things which is systematic error for the research.

The results would be much symmetric if the samples were a little bit helpful.

Conclusion-

In conclusion club football games have become important part of the football fans of NSU. It has

impact in various ways. After cable channels arrival they started to move towards club football

rather than international game. Students of NSU spend a large chunk of time watching these

games in the midnight. This has become good source of entertainment for them. They prefer to

see things that excites them the most. Although representing international teams and watching

them play is an honor but people see what excites them.

Small recommendation is don’t choose research topic anything like this which you won’t have

enough information from both genders.
