PLC Essential Questions

1. What do we expect students to learn?

We expect our students to be on grade level. We have identified our
priority standards for 1st Quarter. We have decided to each pick one
priority standard and create a proficiency scale so we can begin
creating our CFA. We will share our work next week. Our priority
standards for ELA is listed below:
3.RL.1: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of text,
referring explicitly to the test as the basis for the answers.
3.RL.2: Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and
explain how they support the main idea.
3.3.1a: Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and
adverbs, in general and their functions in particular sentences.
3.L1.b: Form and use regular and irregular plural nouns.

2. How will we know if they learn it?

Their CFA results will show us what our students know and where they
stand on the priority scale. Our classroom assignments will also be able
to tell us if our students are on grade level. Sinora Santos suggested that
we use a Chamorro legend for our Reading standards. We are taking
this into consideration and looking to see if we can find one to go along
with our Reading standards.

3. How do we respond when students don’t learn?

We will continue to work closely with our students who are not on grade
level. We will also continue to assess our priority standards to see if
students are improving.

4. How do we respond when students do learn?

We will use positive reinforcement for students who are on grade level.
We will also be recognizing our students who are on grade level after
BM1.

PLC Essential Questions

1. What do we expect students to learn?

For Language, students have to determine elements of a sentence.
Identify nouns, determine pronouns to use for each noun, identify verb
tenses, and determine whether to use an adverb or adjective to
describe the noun or verb. Overall the students’ goal for Language is for
them to be prepared to write a narrative on an important person or
create a biography. From recent testing, student did not exhibit good
writing skill in creating paragraphs so, the 3rd grade team needed to
review on grammar structure. Our priority standards are listed below:

L.3.1.a: Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and

adverbs, in general and their functions in particular sentences.
3.L1.b: Form and use regular and irregular plural nouns.

2. How will we know if they learn it?

Review of the CA as a grade level and discussions on changes help to
determine if the assessment was well written and measures the skills for
ELA. As we are still finalizing our scales, here is our data for each grammar
skill.

PLC Essential Questions

1. What do we expect students to learn?

We are still working together to come up with a CA aligned with what is expected of
SBG. We are still doing our weekly classroom assessments based on the skills being
taught from our priority standards. We are currently working on plural nouns and the
rules that apply. Mrs. Maluwelmeng showed us a song and it was a helpful tool for our
students to remember the rules. We also want our students to be better with rounding.
It has been a hard skill for our students to grasp, so we shared the different activities
we’ve been using in our classrooms. We’ve found interactive notebooks to be helpful.
We’ve also been using BrainPop as a learning tool. Mr. Baisa shared his ideas on
Youtube videos and songs as well. We’ve also been doing rounding games as a
warm up to individual classroom assignments. Again, our priority standards are listed
below:
3.RL.1: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of text, referring
explicitly to the test as the basis for the answers.
3.RL.2: Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how
they support the main idea.
3.3.1a: Explain the function of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, in
general and their functions in particular sentences.
3.L1.b: Form and use regular and irregular plural nouns.

Our priority standards for math are listed below:

3.NBT.1: Use place value understanding to round whole numbers to the nearest 10
and 100.
3.NBT.2: Fluently add and subtract within 1,000 using strategies and algorithms based
on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationships between addition
and subtraction.
3.OA.8: Solve two-step word problems using the four operations. Represent these
problems using equations with a letter standing for the unknown quantity. Assess the
reasonableness of answers using mental computation and estimation strategies using
rounding. (Addition and Subtraction only)

2. How will we know if they learn it?

Our weekly assessments show us how our students are performing. This week we will be
assessing on plural nouns, vowel sounds, and rounding to the nearest ten and
hundred. Our Aimsweb data will also show how students are performing. We hope to
start assessing by next week.

3. How do we respond when students don’t learn?

We will continue to reteach skills and work one on one with struggling students.
Videos, interactive notebooks, and classroom activities and assignments will also be
helpful for students to better understand different concepts.
4. How do we respond when students do learn?
Students who are performing well will be given higher level thinking questions. We will
also use them as peer tutors in their respective groups.

RL3.1 is aligned with the reading test on ACT Aspire. Our Reading DWA results
are posted below:

Year Result Possible contributing factors

17-18 3% (Reading Key Details)  Increased by 6% due to
18-19 9%(Reading Key Details) decrease of class size
 RTI implementation
 Small groups, interactive
notebooks.

We still feel the need to revisit this standard in 3rd Quarter before we give a post
test. We hope to see better results for DWA this year as we continue to work on
RL3.1.

3. How do we respond when students don’t learn?

We will reteach skills that students are struggling with in reading. We will use small
groups and modify intervention plans. We will also give immediate feedback to
our students so they are aware of what they need to work on.

4. How do we respond when students do learn?

Students are praised for their efforts and will have their work and scores
displayed. Students who are excelling will be challenged with higher level
thinking questions. They will also be used as peer tutors.
