An obstacle is a situation that makes us stop, think, analyze, and look
for solutions. If we look for its definition in the dictionary it defines
"obstacle" as something that impedes progress or achievement. And
even though this is true because when we face an obstacle it impedes
something to happen, that does not mean it can not be resolved.
Humanity has faced obstacles since the beginning of its existence. We
have learned how to get food, how to protect ourselves from the
weather, how to clean stuff, etc. This is a proof that obstacles are part
of our lives, we always are going to face problems that will be different
depending our situation and age, but they will always be there.
As I already said, the problems will be different through each stage of
our life and there are even different types of obstacles, like physical,
psychological, economic or social ones. And to have a better idea of the
variety of the obstacles we can think about some of the current
problems our world is going through, like poverty and many people
dying because of it. Climate change, pollution and the extinction of
many species. Discrimination is still present in many places due to skin
color, ethnic, preferences, etc. The same with bullying. Also, the growth
of illnesses or strange medical conditions. Corruption and countries
being affected by it. And the lack of awareness to mental health
problems like anxiety and depression.
Something that all the problems I just mentioned have, is that it is
affecting more than one person and that it is also more than one
person who is needed to stop those obstacles. I mentioned this because
I truly believe that collective help is what this world lacks. I like to think
the proverb of "union make force " could be applied in today's society.
Because think about the significant things we can achieve by getting
people's effort together. And actually, this is a reality and not just an
idea of mine. People have been creating campaigns to plant trees, to
clean lakes and save animals. There are also campaigns to help poor
people, foundations helping ill children, conferences, and programs
that talk about the importance of mental health, etc. So it is proved that
the willingness and effort of a group of people make a change and have
an impact.
On the other hand, people tend to give up or even avoid the obstacles
life presents to them. For example, when children lose in a game and
refuse to play again, when teenagers fail a test and that demotivates
them, when someone loses their job and think they won't find another,
or with the lost of someone they care about. They give up easily or don’t
even try to face it; maybe because they don’t know how; they don’t let
others help them or are just devastated and disillusioned..
And I'm no one to judge that, but I truly think there is always something
better waiting for us behind challenges. Even though sometimes it is
easier to just ignore them or give up, obstacles make us learn and when
we learn we grow as a person. That's why I’m willing to face my future
life’s obstacles, because experience equals knowledge and personal
growth. I’m aware that as everybody else, there will be moments when I’m
not going to feel optimistic or with the desire of facing life's challenges,
but we should all try to keep in mind that everything we go through
leaves us something, and we should make our best for that ‘something’
to be a good memory and lesson.
So, I wrote a series of steps or important aspects to always remember
me how to deal with life’s obstacles the best way possible. First, we need
to identify it but most importantly to accept it. According to an article
called “The Importance of Overcoming Obstacles” says that practicing
acceptance makes obstacles easier to deal with, and that's true
because when we realize our situation we are not only letting that
reality to be but also we are aware that we need to take action on it, in a
possible and realistic way. Then, think about the things we can do to fix
it, and also the things that are not within our reach and we can’t
change. And then, take action about it, face it with patience and
resilience and keeping in mind we will be okay and try to stay the most
positive we can be.
I would like to apply those steps in what we are living now. Since we
found out what was going in our country, the spreading of coronavirus,
the government, and our school authorities implanted some measures,
like the suspension of activities. And we have been adapting to this new
way of living, we are applying virtual work and online classes.
Meanwhile, we are waiting for all this to stop or decrease, patiently and
caring what matter the most, our lives and health. So, going back to the
series of steps, that is exactly what we did and are doing now. First, we
found out about everything; we identify and accept it; we are aware of
the things we can and can't do; we are taking action and making our
best effort with this new way of working, and finally, we are waiting
patiently and going through. Of course, this has affected everyone in
different manners, and each person takes its own time. But we are all
dealing with it and trusting.
Last but not least, it is important to emphasize that in the same way we
can help others through their problems we should let people help us
and trust them. Because, as I previously said, collective help can make a
huge change, it takes commitment, effort, patience and of course the
willingness to face life's obstacles.
