Summary

In this video, Angela Miller came up with a brief explanation of what Group
Investigation Model is and how it works by pointing out the democratic procedures. This
model is propounded by John Dewey and Herbert Thelen. This helps students to work in
groups. In the video, it is shown how to use group investigation model in teaching. The
topic of the teaching is Your Journalistic Rights. There are 6 phases of group
investigation model according to this model. The first phase is encountering puzzling
situation that the teacher comes up with interesting questions that will grasp students’
interests and attentions. Second phase is exploring reactions to situation by asking them
questions on they feel about the. The third phase is formulating study task and organize
for study that the teacher gives instruction on what to look for and how the group will
work. The fourth phase is independent and group study. During this phase, the students
find resources and discuss for the answer. Analyze progress and process is the fifth phase.
This time, the teacher asked questions on what they have learned and the student present
what they found. The final phase is recycling activity that they go back to the original
questions asked in the first and discuss on what they found from their investigation.

Analysis

It is undeniable that this video is a complete and perfect example of group

investigation model. I like how the teacher carried along the teaching. I think it is way to
go that the teacher have written some important points on the board for the investigation.
I think it is important to choose interesting topics or real-life problems or concerns to
make the investigation more active and thriving. It is good to make clear on what to look
for at the beginning of the lesson like the teacher in this video asked three questions to
students. Before the students work in their own group, it is crucial to give them a clear
instruction and information on what they have to search, what materials are allowed to
use. Moreover, the teacher has to explain the sub-topics to be investigated. In doing each
task, each group member should have the opportunity to contribute. Before they work in
groups, the teacher reminds them the classroom behaviors by asking them how to behave
or talk during group discussion. It is what a teacher should do to control classroom during
the activities. It is a right way to do that the teacher does not leave the room or does other
task while the students are investigating by their own. The teacher goes around and look
the students work or rephrase the questions that they are looking for as needed in this
video. The report and the evaluation on what they have investigated and have found out
can be done by letting them make presentation or by asking them questions. By watching
this video, we can see that group investigation provides various benefits to students.
Group investigation can be used for a class activity and research.
