ABSTRACT

Online Library Management System is a system which maintains the

information about the books present in the library. The paper titled
Library Management System is Library management software for
monitoring and controlling the transactions in a library by creating a
website/software with a database that contain adding new member, new
books, and updating new information, searching books and members and
facility to borrow and return books. In our existing system all the
transaction of books are done manually, So taking more time for a
transaction like borrowing a book or returning a book and also for
searching of members and books. Another major disadvantage is that to
preparing the list of books borrowed and the available books in the
library will take more time, currently it is doing as a one day process for
verifying all records. So after conducting the feasibility study we decided
to make the manual Library management system to be computerized.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Overview

A Library Management System (LMS) is a tool to help any libraries which are
still using the old way to manage their library. The old way like searching for a book
using manual work is hassle, fast report generation is not possible, information about
issue/return of the books are not properly maintained, no central database can be created
as information is not available in database. But by using the LMS, user can overcome
all the problems mentioned above. This system can manage all the happenings of the
library. Book transactions including book searching, availability of the book, details and
appearance of the book, personal book borrowing history and etc. can be very easily
handled by this system. This system is suitable for small to big libraries including
medical and legal libraries, colleges, schools, universities, corporate houses and other
academic resource centers.

1.2 Motivation

In our existing system all the transaction of books are done manually, So taking more
time for a transaction like borrowing a book or returning a book and also for searching
of members and books, So after conducting the feasibility study we decided to make the
manual Library management system to be computerized.

1.3 Problem Statement

The waste of time when dealing with book borrows and member registration. Where it
takes a lot of time to do these operations. And doing these on a modern library
management system reduces the time that is wasted for these operations.

1.4 Objectives

The general objective of the proposed system is to change the manual system into
computerized System, so the user can get books from online without going to the
library, moreover a user can access books within an instant of time and
everywhere around internet connection available.

7
Here are some specific objectives of the project we proposed:

• It provides "better and efficient" service to members.

• Reduce the workload of employee.
• Faster retrieval of information about the desired book.
• Provide facility for proper monitoring reduce paper work and provide data security.
• All details will be available on a click.
• Fast access to database (Quick transaction).
• More Storage Capacity.
• Search facility
• Look and Feel Environment

1.5 Scope

The place where this system is used can be colleges, schools, universities, corporate
houses and other academic resource centers. PHP and MySQL instructions are used in
our code to open the database, establish a connection between it and the HTML code to
insert data, retrieve data, delete data and also modify data.

1.6 Significant

This system improves services delivered to end users. Data is saved in the most
appropriate manner eliminating duplication and redundancy. Multiple users can access
the system at the same time. The system operates electronically hence ensures less space
is occupied and also presents a paperless working environment. Library staff members
are motivated by the system since it makes work easier. The system has a friendly user
interface which is attractive and easy to use.

1.7 Organization

In here we describe the other chapters briefly.

In the chapter two we refer to other sources that are related to our project.

In the chapter three we try to find a solution for our research problem.

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Introduction
In this chapter we look at and examine the previous researches done on the subject of
Online library system or digital library system and see what other people offered
before and what their opinion was about the subject.

2.2 Framework
2.2.1 The research “The eLibrary and Learning” of the author “Peter Brophy” in its
introduction section it discusses the term “elibrary” and how we design and affective
elibrary and it states “It merely points to some of the connotations the term may carry in
certain communities and some of the limitations it may signify. The perfectly valid
question remains: How might we define and design an effective “eLibrary” which
would contribute fully to the achievement of broadly based learning objectives? What,
at its best, would an eLibrary look like? Although some might argue that the starting
point should be elsewhere, we can begin to answer that question by exploring more
traditional understandings of the “library”, examining electronic “equivalents” and then
considering the question of and how, and in what manner, such models might be applied
in the context of learning and eLearning”[1] in Brophy’s opinion we should go back to
understanding the traditional library and then start designing a modern library system.

2.2.2 The research of Jack M. Maness with the title “Library 2.0 Theory: Web 2.0 and
Its Implications for Libraries”. Mannes talks about a modern library system as a Library
2.0 in the form of an application and says “This paper defines "Library 2.0" as "the
application of interactive, collaborative, and multi-media web-based technologies to
web-based library services and collections," and suggests this definition be adopted by
the library science community. Limiting the definition to web-based services, and not
library services more generally, avoids potential confusion and sufficiently allows the

9
term to be researched, further theorized, and renders it more useful in professional
discourse.”[2]

2.3 Summery
In summary we mentioned some of the previous researches done in our subject of online
library system or related system and how they help or complement our current work.

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Introduction
In this chapter we are going to define the stages that are required to develop a successful
online library system.

3.2 Research Framework

3.2.1

We went out to examine the current libraries in the city and how they work. So we could learn
from them and develop a design decision.

3.2.2

Gathering information about physical needs and requirements to develop the online library
system and also what the requirements of users of this library would be.

3.2.3

Bringing a team of programmers and database experts and start designing a secure online
library system with an easy interface to use.

3.2.4

Setting out the system for real world use in real situations and let users experience its use and
if found any bugs in the system, we shall fix it along the way.

3.3 Summery

In this chapter we talked about the required steps towards designing a successful online library
system that is interactive with an easy interface and high security so everyone could use it and
not worry about the security of their accounts being breached.
