Kids responsible for garage fire

By Helen Tatchell

A deliberately lit fire in a residential garage has been

started by minors.
Police confirmed to the Moorabool News a 6-year old boy
and an 8-year old boy started the fire with paper and a
cigarette lighter, on Wednesday 13 May at around 1.25pm.
The property in Cowie Street Ballan, suffered extensive
damage to the garage and a vehicle under restoration
inside. The house was not affected by the fire.
It is alleged the fire was possibly fuelled by an accelerant.
Emergency fire crews in Breathing Apparatus had
difficulty extinguishing the smouldering blaze due to
numerous contents located inside the garage.
Incident Controller and Deputy Group Officer Billy Smith
told the Moorabool News the crews contained the fire
quickly.
“Swift action by neighbours helped to make sure the
occupants were evacuated as the fire took hold.
“The fire was confined to the garage only,” the Ballan 1st
Lieutenant said.
The two boys lived at the premises and will be spoken to
by police and the fire brigade.
Fire brigade units attended from Ballan, Myrniong and
Bacchus Marsh with no injuries reported.

Historical council meeting

By Kate Taylor

Moorabool Shire Councillors have starred in a YouTube video but sadly, it

didn’t go viral.
The April/May council Ordinary Meeting of Council, held on Wednesday 6
May, was streamed live online for the first time in history, due to the covid-19
pandemic, with the April meeting items having been postponed and carried
over to May.
The YouTube video of the meeting, which runs for over an hour, has been
viewed by less than 20 people however the quality is good.
Moorabool Mayor David Edwards said it was a very different experience.
“Two Councillors, Tatchell and Keogh, were on-line with the other councillors
actually at the meeting, and for a first attempt I believe officers did an awesome
job getting it ready at such short notice,” he said.
Council CEO Derek Madden said because equipment was re-purposed for the
meeting, the cost to council of shifting online was minimal.

COVID-19 has made its way to the Moorabool Shire, beginning its path at

ATTENTION – Local Business Owners

SEIZE THE OPPORTUNITY!
The Coronavirus has triggered a major economic shock, and we understand local small businesses are doing it tough.
However, throughout history when transformational shocks to the economy occur, they always create opportunity too.
In times of crisis, we need to push panic aside and make calm, clearheaded decisions – and look for OPPORTUNITY!
• The JobKeeper and JobSeeker payments will assist in
supporting the local economy
• For some, this could provide a greater opportunity to spend
• Initial surveys show much of this money will be spent locally
• Restrictions are slowly easing, so expect consumers to be
more active
• The restrictions have created pent up consumer demand
across our region
• Demand for local consumer goods and services is likely to
be higher than normal given continued severe restrictions
in other sectors
There is plenty of opportunity! And the businesses that are
most proactive will seize it.
It may seem counter-intuitive, but there has never been a
better or more important time to work on your next marketing
move.
Now is the time to plan.
