CHAPTER I

Background of the Study

Academic stress is the anxiety and stress that comes from schooling and education

.There is a lot of pressure that comes along with pursuing their education. Students report

experiencing academic stress at predictable times each semester with the greatest sources of

academic stress resulting from taking and studying for exams, grade competition, and the large

amount of content to master in a small amount of time (Abouserie, 1994).

There are lot of stress related to studies, homework, tests, reading, tuition and other

academic competitions student faces a lot of stress due to imbalance of academic and social

performance and time management for extracurricular activities from education.

Academic stress are encountered and struggling by adolescent people, especially the

students. At school it is inevitable to the students feel worrying to much, over thinking and be

competitive for academics.

Academic stress is the anxiety and that comes from schooling and education. Excessive

levels of academic stress can result in an increased incidence of psychological and physical

problems like depression, anxiety, nervousness related disorders, which in turn can affect the

students academic result.

From the time the students entered the school all the expectations are there from

classmates, teachers, parents and most of all themselves. The pressure from studies and other
factors that trigger to the strong feeling of stress that can lead to poor physical, emotional and

mental suffering.

Thus, students tend to become inactive and not productive outdoors and nit enjoying

their lifer because of maintaining a bog picture perspective. Moreover, the continuous increase

level of this issue is a serious thing to be discussed and give attention. Factors of academic

stress can be basically found on the students environment. Thus, researchers of this study seek

and gather data relevant to the problem.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers aim to know the different effects that cause of academic stress and to

identify the effects to the performance of the students, especially to the students who are

target on this study. The researchers will specifically seek to answer the following questions:

1. What are the current performance of the students?

2. What are the possible effects of academic stress to the performance levels of the

students?

3. What are the possible intervention to reduce the academic stress of the students?

Scope and Delimitation

This study will focus on the different effects of academic stress to the performance

levels of the students. The study will focuses specifically to the Senior High School Students at

The Lewis College and will be the respondents on this study. The researchers will also gathered

data on the internet to gain some information that necessarily needed on the study.
Significance of the Study

The study will benefit the following:

Students: The findings of the study will give an information on what are the possible happen in

their life that effects of academic stress and help to cope up with it

Teachers: The findings of the study will waken the deep understanding towards the

performance of the students because of academic stress and help the students to reach out

with their stress.

Parents: With this study, parents would be able to know the reasons that happens to the

performance on their child because of academic stress, the parents must give more attention

and give some advices to help overcome this serious condition.

Society: This study will give consciousness and understand the people who experiencing this.

Definition of Terms

Students- a person formally engaged in learning, especially one enrolled in a specific

school.

Stress- your body's way of responding to any kind of demand or threat.

Overthinking- to think about something or someone for too long.

Anxiety- is a general term for several disorders that cause nervousness, fear,

apprehension, and worrying.

Pressure- Attempt to persuade or coerce into doing something.


Performance- action or process of performing a task or function.
