A Few Good Men

1992

“ A Few Good Men” is a 1992 American movie which depicts the trial of two
Marine Corps officer who were accused of murder of their fellow Marines.
This movie give us an insight as to whether a man shall be held responsible for
the act of committing a crime when he was from the start merely following an order. The
concept of that would be an easy for us to say to not just follow that order or merely
disregard it, if that order would violate our principle; nevertheless we think there would
be a law that would protect us for violating such order as it is contrary to a generally
understood principle of life or law. But what about those in the military who has different
views of following an order. The insignia that they carry. The code that they follow.
These has embodied in their life, as these they have seen this as their honor and
respect for themselves. This question put back us in this movie, when two Marines who
were given an order or to what they called “code red” ( a command to carry out a violent
extrajudicial punishment) to train the Marine who have violated their code but eventually
murdered a fellow Marine. The case was set back with many trials and questions that
would drawn leading to arrest of the higher official for violating the principle of morality.
He thought that being part of marine, there would be no excuses for weak as they have
choose to serve to protect the people as well as the country. And those who are weak
should be train much deeper to stand up to be a better marine. And code red is his
method for that. He said that he should not be charge of a crime, because he just did
what is right. The right to train/punish his soldier even this is beyond to what is really
right. He added that those who protect the weak, has know nothing about to defend a
nation, but implying to weaken it.
My thought of this is totally contrary. The action of simply following orders even
that may cause the problem in morality must be outrightly be punish. The Marines shall
be responsible for their action. They supposed to fight for people who are unable to fight
for themselves. As order is not always absolute to be followed if this blacken our
principle of life. With regard to the higher official who unjustly used his power to
discriminate and oppressed those in need, it is not right that one should take advantage
of one’s position for the benefit of himself or for the other if this may cause to take one’s
life.
Yes, military shall have their own order. I remember the saying that “rules are
rules, if we do not have rules, we are scavenger”, this just implying to us that order and
rules are set to be followed, otherwise disarray. However they cannot do what they
want. It is not the right thing to conflict with the nation’s value, and we are always taught
of to value life.
