Everybody should change their way of life to reduce global warming. There are several things that
we can do. One of them is by buying and consuming fresh local groceries as much as possible. It of
course includes local vegetables, fruits, bread, etc.
Local groceries don’t need much transportation to get it into the market. It of course means, the
amount of carbon dioxide produced is less than the groceries from other region. Therefore, by
buying local groceries we are helping reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced.
Consuming fresh groceries instead of frozen ones are healthier for us. Furthermore, fresh food or
groceries means no requirements for it to be freeze up. It means that no electricity is needed and
saving energy means reducing carbon dioxide and money.
So, from now on we should consume fresh local groceries to reduce global warming.
The use of formalin and other dangerous preservatives in food has been serious problem for three reasons.
Firstly, formalin is not for human beings, but it is for biological specimens and experiments. Formalin in
biology is a 10% solution of formaldehyde in water which is usually used as a disinfectant or to preserve
biological specimens. Thus, it is not for food preservatives. Of course when it is used for food preservative, it
will be very dangerous to human’s body.
The second reason is that there is no tight control from the government. This condition makes the people’s
health is really in a threat. When the control is weak and the use formalin was spread wide all over the
Indonesian regions, and these days it has really happened, the citizen’s bodies will be badly contaminated with
the poisons. Fish or food traders still sell their products which contain formalin and dangerous preservatives.
Can you imagine that our digestive system absorbs the substance that should be for the human and animal
corpses?
Considering the reasons, we can make a conclusion that the use of formalin and other preservatives is really a
serious problem if it is not resolved immediately.

Acid rain is rain that is highly acidic because of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and other air pollutants
dissolved in it. Normal rain is slightly acidic, with a pH of 6. Acid rain may have a pH value as low as 2.8.
Acid rain can severely damage both plant and animal life. Certain lakes, for example, have lost all fish and
plant life because of acid rain.
Acid rain comes from sulfur in coal and oil. When they burn, they make sulfur dioxide (SO 2). Most sulfur
leaves factory chimneys as the gaseous sulfur dioxide (SO2) and most nitrogen are also emitted as one of the
nitrogen oxides (NO or NO2), both of which are gasses. The gasses may be dry deposited–absorbed directly by
the land, by lakes or by the surface vegetation. If they are in the atmosphere for anytime, the gasses will
oxidize (gain an oxygen atom) and go into solution as acids. Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and the nitrogen oxides
will become nitric acid (HNO3). The acids usually dissolve in cloud droplets and may travel great distances
before being precipitated as acid rain.
Catalysts such as hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and ammonium help promote the formation of acids in clouds.
More ammonium (NH4) can be formed when some of the acids are partially neutralized by airborne ammonia
(NH3). Acidification increases with the number of active hydrogen (H+) ions dissolved in acid. Hydrocarbons
emitted by, for example, car exhausts will react in sunlight with nitrogen oxides to produce ozone. Although it
is invaluable in the atmosphere, low-level ozone causes respiratory problems and also hastens the formation of
acid rain. When acid rain falls on the ground it dissolves and liberates heavy metals and aluminum (Al). When
it is washed into lakes, aluminum irritates the outer surfaces of many fish. As acid rain falls or drains into the
lake the pH of the lake falls. Forests suffer the effect of acid rain through damage to leaves, through the loss of
vital nutrients, and through the increased amounts of toxic metals liberated by acid, which damage roots and
soil microorganisms.
12. What is the result of the burning of the coal and oil?
A. Ammonium
B. Nitric acid
C. Sulphuric acid
D. Sulfur dioxide
E. Airborne ammonia
13. The sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides will …. in the air.
A. Be absorbed directly by the vegetation
B. Dissolved in the lake water and land
C. Emit another sulfur gas
D. Radiate an oxygen atom
E. Gain an oxygen atom

Human body is made up of countless millions of cells. Food is needed to built up new cells
and replace the worn out cells. However, the food that we take must be changed into
substances that can be carried in the blood to the places where they are needed. This process is
called digestion.
The first digestive process takes place in the mouth. The food we eat is broken up into small
pieces by the action of teeth, mixed with saliva, a juice secreted by glands in the mouth. Saliva
contains digestive juice which moisten the food, so it can be swallowed easily.
From the mouth, food passes through the esophagus (the food passage) into the stomach. Here,
the food is mixed with the juices secreted by the cells in the stomach for several hours. Then
the food enters the small intestine. All the time the muscular walls of the intestine are
squeezing, mixing and moving the food onwards.
In a few hours, the food changes into acids. These are soon absorbed by the villi (microscopic
branch projections from the intestine walls) and passed into the bloodstream.

It is widely believed that there are only two options for patients with terminal illness, either they
die suffering or receive euthanasia. A number of people, especially in western part of the world,
agrees with the idea of doing euthanasia or good death they call it. Euthanasia is generally
defined as the act, undertaken only by a physician, that intentionally ends the life of a person at
his or her request. This act has been been legalized in a small number of countries of the world.
But is euthanasia the best choice for people suffering from terminal illness?
I personally believe that life is the ultimate gift from God and that taking it away is usurping
power that belongs to God only. Religion, Catholic and Islam for example, sees euthanasia as a
type of murder, it is a crime, and thus it is immoral. In Hinduism, they think that even though
helping a person end a painful live may be good, it interferes with the cycle of death and rebirth.
Also, euthanasia is bad because of the sanctity of human life. We should never kill human beings
as they are to be valued. Many people think that we have value when we make other people’s life
better. So when we’re terminally ill, and we become a burden to our family, we would better do
euthanasia. That way we make their lives easier and better. However, our inherent value doesn't
depend on anything else. It doesn't depend on whether we are having a good life, or whether we
are making other people's lives better. We exist, so we have value. Thus, we shouldn't treat other
people as a means to our own ends. It applies to us too. We shouldn't treat ourselves as a means
to our own ends. And this means that we shouldn't end our lives just because it seems the most
effective way of putting an end to our suffering or to ease people’s lives. Doing that is not to
respect our inherent worth.
The last, proponents of euthanasia argue that all human being has the right to choose whether to
continue living or end their life for good reasons. However, euthanasia is not about the right to
die. They are about the right to kill. Legalising euthanasia would only put too much power in the
hands of doctors, who could abuse their position. They may soon start killing people without
bothering with their permission.
In conclusion, I value the opportunity of living in a free society. People indeed have personal
autonomy. But I value life more and I also recognise that personal autonomy has its limits. When
we make a decision to end our or other people’s life, we have to remember that many other
people such as family and friends, who are left behind, will also be affected. Our sacred life
belongs to God, the only one who can take it from us.

what happened to you. Let me tell you (3) _____secret. I was grounded by my parents because I
skipped school last year. I honestly thought that I could get away with it because my dad had
dropped me off at school that day and he saw me go to the front door of the school. What he (4)
______ was that my friends were waiting for me behind the bushes and I joined them as soon as
my dad's car left. We spent the day playing video games at the mall then caught a movie before
we all headed home.
When I got home, I did not know that (5) _____ parents already knew I had skipped school. So I
pretended I had been to school (6) _____ day. It was after dinner when my parents asked me to
join them in the living room. Then my father asked me to sit down and listen. He told me my
teacher had called my mother at home and my father at the office to look for me. Needless to
say, they were very angry with me and did not accept my feeble explanation. They grounded me
for a month.
Just like you, I was angry with my parents for what they did. Then, I realized that I needed to
learn to be responsible, my promises and words (especially about going to school), and most of
all, I learned that once my parents trust in me was destroyed, it was hard for me to win it back.
Eventually my parents forgave me for what I did and our relationship was fine again. I know that
the same thing will happen to you and your parents soon. What I am trying to say is, don't be
mad at them. They just want to teach you a lesson.
See you soon my friend,

1)Throughout history, paper has been made from various plants such as rice and papyrus, but
today wood is the chief source of paper. In the past, paper was made by hand, but now most of
the work is done by machines. Today paper is made from wood pulp by using either a
mechanical or a chemical process.
(2) In the mechanical process, wood is ground into small chips. During the grinding, it is sprayed
with
water to keep it from burning from the friction of the grinder. Then the chips are soaked in water.
(3) In the chemical process, first the wood is washed, and then it is cut into small pieces in a
chipping machine. Then the chips are cooked in certain chemicals. After the wood is cooked, it is
washed to get rid of the chemicals.
(4)The next steps in making paper are the same for both the mechanical and the chemical
processes. The pulp is drained to form a thick mass, bleached with chlorine, and then thoroughly
washed again.
Next the pulp is put through a large machine that squeezes the water out and forms the pulp into
long
sheets. After the pulp sheets go through a drier and a press, they are wound onto rolls. These
rolls of paper are then ready for use.
(5)The next time you use paper, you should think about its origin and how it is made. What
would the world be like without paper? Ask yourself that question. If you imagine how it would
be like, you will understand how essential paper has been in the development of civilization.

A cell phone is a great gadget in this modern world. What is a cell phone? A cell phone is
actually a radio in certain way. Like a radio, by a cell phone we can communicate to other people
in real time. Million people use cell phone for their communication. Even nowadays, people use
cell phones to communicate in voice, written and data. Alexander Graham Bell is the person who
make great change in the way people communicate to each other. He invented a telephone in
1876. While wireless radio was formally known in 18994 presented by Guglielmo Marconi. By
these two technologies, then a cell phone was born. However do you know how actually cell
phones work?
This short explanation on how a cell phone work is really wonderful. A cell phone or in long
term “cellular telephone’ works by transmitting signals of radio to towers of cellular. The towers
are networked to a central switching station. The connection usually uses wire, fiber optic-cables,
or microwave.
Then the central switching station which handles calls in certain given area is directed connected
to the wire-based telephone system. Cellulars are pick up by the towers and relayed to another
cellular telephone user or the user of wire-based telephone network.
the towers vary in the capacity and capability to receive signals. Some can receive the signal
from short distance and the others can receive more distance. However, there are usually more
than one tower in certain given area so that the system can handle the increasing telephone
traffic.

Dear Frodi,
It was a real sorrow that I heard this morning of your great loss. I knew your mother was ill, for
your brother told me several weeks ago. However, as he at that time did not seem to think the
illness was very serious, the news of your mother’s death came to me as a shock. You have my
sincere and heartfelt sympathy, my dear fellow, in your sorrow. I know you will feel it deeply, for
you always thought so much of your mother and loved her so truly. I feel it also as a personal loss
to myself, for your mother was always very kind to me. Her death must be a terrible grief to your
father, too. Please assure him of my sincere sympathy.
Words, I know, are poor comforters. “The heart knows its own sorrow”, and in such sorrows we
are always alone. However, it is not mere words when I say that I feel with you in your sorrow.

In Australia there are three levels of governments, the federal government, state governments and
local governments. All of these levels of government are necessary. This is so for number of reasons.
First, the federal government is necessary for the big things. They keep the economy in order and
look after like defensE. Similarly, the state governments look after the middle sized things. For
example they look after law and order, preventing things like vandalism in school. Finally, local
government look after the small thins. They look after things like collecting rubbish, otherwise

There is no best way to deal with pests in agriculturE. Pesticides which are commonly used may cause
many problems. I think combining different management operations is the most effective way to control
pests.
Firstly, the chemicals in the pesticides may build up as residues in the environment and in the soil which
absorbs the chemicals. This reduces the quality of farm product.
Secondly, pests can gradually become resistant to pesticides. This means that newer and stronger ones
have to be developed.
Lastly, some pesticides affect non target plants and animals such as fish and bees. This affects the
ecology and environment as well.
So, understanding of ecology of an area helps a lot in pest control. Pesticides should be chosen and
applied carefully so that they don’t affect the ecological balance and environment.
Therefore, integrated pest management is a safe and more effective option to fight pest in agriculture and
livestock.

What is photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is a food-making process that occurs in green plants. It
is the chief function of leaves. The word photosynthesis means putting together with light. Green
plants use energy from light to combine carbon dioxide and water to make sugar and other
chemical compounds.
How is the light used in photosynthesis?
The light used in photosynthesis is absorbed by a green pigment called chlorophyll. Each food-
making cell in a plant leaf contains chlorophyll in small bodies called chloroplasts. In chloroplast,
light energy causes water drawn form the soil to split into hydrogen and oxygen.
What are the steps of photosynthesis process? Let me tell you the process of photosynthesis, in
a series of complicated steps, the hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide from the air, forming a
simple sugar. Oxygen from the water molecules is given off in the process. From sugar together
with nitrogen, sulphur, and phosporus from the soil-green plants can make starch, fat, protein,
vitamins, and other complex compounds essential for life. Photosynthesis provides the chemical
energy that is needed to produced these compounds.
11. What step after the hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide from the air …

Biodiesel is a clean burning substitute for petroleum based diesel fuel. Biodiesel is made of vegetable oil.
To make or manufacture Biodiesel, you must first start with raw materials. The raw materials needed in
the production of Biodiesel are a small amount of methanol and a ready supply of vegetable product. One
of the most common vegetables used in the production of Biodiesel is corn, although depending on the
geographic location of the manufacturing facility many other plants are used as well (rapeseed, soybeans,
flaxseed, etc.). The first step is to use the raw vegetable product to make vegetable oil. Vegetable oil by
itself will not be what you need to power a car, from here it has to be processed into Biodiesel.
The process for converting vegetable oil into Biodiesel is sometimes called ester interchange. To
complete this process the vegetable oil has to be combined with a smaller amount of methanol and then
put in the presence of a small quantity of an alkaline catalyst (for example, 5% to 1% sodium hydroxide).
Vegetable oil is made up of so-called triglycerides, which is a compound of the trivalent alcohol glycerin
with three fatty acids. The goal of ester interchange is to separate the glycerin molecule from the three
fatty acids and replace it with three methanol molecules. This process then yields roughly 90% Biodiesel
and 10% of a glycerin byproduct. The glycerin byproduct can be used in a number of other chemical
processes for different industries.

If you want to advance your career, you will have to make some careful decisions
about which jobs you take. Consider a job offered for the value it has to your
career. It may mean sacrifices at first. You may have to move to a different region
or country to get a job that is right for you. You may have to work late hours, at
least temporarily. You might even have to take a lower salary for a job that offers
you the experience that you need. But you should never accept a job if it is not
related to your career goals.
Accepting a job that is not within your career path will not give you the skill or
experience you need or want. You will find yourself frustrated in such a position
and consequently will not perform your best. This will have an effect on the
people around you, who will not feel as if you are being part of the team. The best
advice is to think carefully before accepting any position and make sure that the
job is one you to have.

The sense of taste is one of a person’s five senses. We taste with the help of
taste-buds in the tongue.
There are four main kinds of taste: sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. All other tastes
are just mixtures of two or more of these main types.
The surface of the tongue has more than fifteen thousand taste-buds (or cells).
These are connected to the brain by special nerves which send the so-called
‘tastes messages.
When the tongue comes into contact with food of any kind, the taste-buds will
pick up the taste. The nerves then send a message to the brain. This will make us
aware of the taste. All this happens in just a few seconds.
There are four kinds of taste-buds, each of which is sensitive to only a particular
taste. These four groups are located in different parts of the tongue.
The taste-buds for salty and sweet tastes are found round the tip of the tongue
and along its sides. Sour tastes can be picked up only at the sides of the tongue.
The taste-buds of the bitter taste are found at the innermost edge of the tongue.
There are taste-buds at the centre of the tongue.
The senses of smell and sight can affect taste. The good smell of food increases
its taste. Similarly, attractive colours can make food appear tastier and more
delicious. If food does not smell good or is dull-coloured, it will look tasty and
may not taste good at all.
Very hot or cold sensations can make the taste-buds insensitive. Food that is too
hot or too cold, when placed in the mouth, will have no tastes at all.

from other region. Therefore, by buying local groceries we are helping reduce the
amount of carbon dioxide produceD.
Consuming fresh groceries instead of frozen ones are healthier for us.
Furthermore, fresh food or groceries means no requirements for it to be freeze
up. It means that no electricity is needed and saving energy means reducing
carbon dioxide and money.
So, from now on we should consume fresh local groceries to reduce global
warming.

The use of formalin and other dangerous preservatives in food has been serious
problem for three reasons. Firstly, formalin is not for human beings, but it is for
biological specimens and experiments. Formalin in Biology is a 10% solution of
formaldehyde in water which is usually used as a disinfectant or to preserve
biological specimens. Thus, it is not for food preservatives. Of course when it is
used for food preservative, it will be very dangerous to human’s body.
The second reason is that there is no tight control from the government. This
condition makes the people’s health is really in a threat. When the control is weak
and the use formalin was spread wide all over the Indonesian regions, and these
days it has really happened, the citizen’s bodies will be badly contaminated with
the poisons. Fish or food traders still sell their products which contain formalin
and dangerous preservatives. Can you imagine that our digestive system
absorbs the substance that should be for the human and animal corpses?
Considering the reasons, we can make a conclusion that the use of formalin and
other preservatives is really a serious problem if it is not resolved immediately.
9 . Why is formalin dangerous for human`s body?
A. It is not food preservatives
B. It is a disinfectant for human beings
C. It is used to preserve biological specimens
D. It is 10% solution of formaldehyde in water
E. It is controlled flighty from the government
TEKS EXPLANATION
14. We can taste any kind of food because of ……..
A. the good smell of food
B. the four main kinds of taste
C. the taste-buds in the tongue
D. the senses of smell and sight
E. the taste-buds round the tip of the tongue

I have a new hobby now. Planting! You won't believe it, I grow so many kinds of fruit here
such as guava, mango, orange, and dragon fruit. I usually buy the seed at a nearby shop.
I'm crazy about planting now. I guess because it's so easy to get the seeds or young

A Career is an individual’s journey through learning, work and other aspects of life. There are a
number of ways to define a career and the term is used in a variety of ways. Every body who
have career exactly want to advance their career.
If you want to advance your career, you will have to make some careful decisions about which
jobs you take. Consider a job offered for the value it has to your career. It may mean sacrifices
at first. You may have to move to a different region or country to get a job that is right for you.
You may have to work late hours, at least temporarily. You might even have to take a lower
salary for a job that offers you the experience that you need. But you should never accept a job
if it is not related to your career goals.
Accepting a job that is not within your career path will not give you the skill or experience you
need or want. You will find yourself frustrated in such a position and consequently will not
perform your best. This will have an effect on the people around you, who will not feel as if you
are being part of the team. The best advice is to think carefully before accepting any position
and make sure that the job is one you to have.

Recycling is a collection, processing, and reuse of materials that would otherwise be thrown away.
Materials ranging from precious metals to broken glass, from old newspapers to plastic spoons, can be
recycled. The recycling process reclaims the original material and uses it in new products.
In general, using recycled materials to make new products costs less and requires less energy than using
new materials. Recycling can also reduce pollution, either by reducing the demand for high-pollution
alternatives or by minimizing the amount of pollution produced during the manufacturing process.
Paper products that can be recycled include cardboard containers, wrapping paper, and office paper. The
most commonly recycled paper product is newsprint. In newspaper recycling, old newspapers are
collected and searched for contaminants such as plastic bags and aluminum foil. The paper goes to a
processing plant where it is mixed with hot water and turned into pulp in a machine that works much like a
big kitchen blender. The pulp is screened and filtered to remove smaller contaminants. The pulp then
goes to a large vat where the ink separates from the paper fibers and fl oats to the surface. The ink is
skimmed off, dried and reused as ink or burned as boiler fuel. The cleaned pulp is mixed with new wood
fibers to be made into paper again.
Experts estimate the average office worker generates about 5 kg of wastepaper per month. Every ton of
paper that is recycled saves about 1.4 cu m (about 50 cu ft) of landfill space. One ton of recycled paper
saves 17 pulpwood trees (trees used to produce paper).
Human body is made up of countless millions of cells. Food is needed to built up new
cells and replace the worn out cells. However, the food that we take must be changed
into substances that can be carried in the blood to the places where they are needed.
This process is called digestion.
The first digestive process takes place in the mouth. The food we eat is broken up into
small pieces by the action of teeth, mixed with saliva, a juice secreted by glands in the
mouth. Saliva contains digestive juice which moisten the food, so it can be swallowed
easily.
From the mouth, food passes through the esophagus (the food passage) into the
stomach. Here, the food is mixed with the juices secreted by the cells in the stomach for
several hours. Then the food enters the small intestine. All the time the muscular walls of
the intestine are squeezing, mixing and moving the food onwards.
In a few hours, the food changes into acids. These are soon absorbed by the villi
(microscopic branch projections from the intestine walls) and passed into the
bloodstream.

Everybody should change their way of life to reduce global warming. There are several things that we
can do. One of them is by buying and consuming fresh local groceries as much as possible. It of course
includes local vegetables, fruits, bread, etc.
Local groceries don’t need much transportation to get it into the market. It of course means, the amount
of carbon dioxide produced is less than the groceries from other region. Therefore, by buying local
groceries we are helping reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced.
Consuming fresh groceries instead of frozen ones are healthier for us. Furthermore, fresh food or
groceries means no requirements for it to be freeze up. It means that no electricity is needed and saving
energy means reducing carbon dioxide and money.
So, from now on we should consume fresh local groceries to reduce global warming.

Certain lakes, for example, have lost all fish
and plant life because of acid rain.
Acid rain comes from sulfur in coal and oil. When they burn, they make sulfur dioxide (SO2 ). Most sulfur
leaves factory chimneys as the gaseous sulfur dioxide (SO2 ) and most nitrogen are also emitted as one
of the nitrogen oxides (NO or NO2 ), both of which are gasses. The gasses may be dry deposited–
absorbed directly by the land, by lakes or by the surface vegetation. If they are in the atmosphere for
anytime, the gasses will oxidize (gain an oxygen atom) and go into solution as acids. Sulphuric acid (H2
SO4 ) and the nitrogen oxides will become nitric acid (HNO3 ). The acids usually dissolve in cloud
droplets and may travel great distances before being precipitated as acid rain.
Catalysts such as hydrogen peroxide, ozone, and ammonium help promote the formation of acids in
clouds. More ammonium (NH4 ) can be formed when some of the acids are partially neutralized by
airborne ammonia (NH3 ). Acidification increases with the number of active hydrogen (H+) ions
dissolved in acid. Hydrocarbons emitted by, for example, car exhausts will react in sunlight with nitrogen
oxides to produce ozone. Although it is invaluable in the atmosphere, low-level ozone causes respiratory
problems and also hastens the formation of acid rain. When acid rain falls on the ground it dissolves and
liberates heavy metals and aluminum (Al). When it is washed into lakes, aluminum irritates the outer
