The Question:

Is it possible to model the personality


traits of an individual by
understanding their choice of visuals?
Expectations:

● To establish a correlation between the analytical understanding of


personality of an individual and the understanding of an individual’s
personality from his/her choices of images.
● To understand the accuracy of the modelling with respect to standard
analytical understanding of an individual’s personality traits.
The Big Five personality traits:

Many contemporary personality psychologists believe that there are five


basic dimensions of personality, often referred to as the "Big 5"
personality traits. The five broad personality traits described by the
theory are extraversion , agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness,
and neuroticism.

1. Openness.
2. Conscientiousness.
3. Extraversion.
4. Agreeableness.
5. Neuroticism.
Specifics for the experiment:

● For the sake of restricting the size of the experiment we chose only two
traits out of the five for our study of the correlation during the experiment.

Traits chosen for the experiment:

1. Extraversion
2. Neuroticism
Extraversion:
Extraverted individuals who draws their energy from their interactions with the
social world. Extraverts are sociable, talkative, and outgoing. The opposite of
extraversion is introversion.
Extraverts are typically:

● Gregarious
● Assertive
● Active
● Excitement-seeking
● Emotionally positive and enthusiastic
● Warm and outgoing
● Like photos of brighter shades
Neuroticism:
Neuroticism refers to a tendency towards negative emotions and includes
experiences like feeling anxious and depressed. The opposite of neuroticism is
emotional stability.
Key facets of neuroticism include:

● Anxiety and tension


● Angry hostility and irritability
● Depression
● Self-consciousness and shyness
● Being impulsive and moody
● Lack of self-confidence
● Like photos of darker shades
Design of the Experiment:

Step-1:

● We collected the basic information about a participant’s personality


by using a subset of questions from the TIPI - Ten Item Personality
measure
● The subset of questions were only those questions relevant to the
traits chosen for the experiment
Step-2:

● Then in the next part of the data collection we collected the


participants’ choices of images from 8 sets of binary questions with
4 sets of binary options collecting information relevant to the trait
extraversion and the other 4 sets for the trait neuroticism
Step-3:

● Finally, to understand the reason behind the participants’ choices, we


surveyed the participants about the level of influence of reasons like
liking or disliking or familiarity driving their choices or any other
reason that drove them to make a particular choice.
Approach to selection of images:

● We found a previous similar research where the research was mainly


focused on colour theory and we got list of images and their average
of ratings given by people for the corresponding emotions.
● We have taken photos from the same database according to ratings
obtained by mapping the emotions in the database to the
characteristic emotions of the personality traits chosen.
RESULTS
The Population Distribution:
Factors influencing the choices:
Other choices mentioned by the participants:

● Colour
● Intensity in the images-(brightness/darkness)
● Current mood/whim
● Optimism
● Positivity
● Environment
● Reality etc.
TIPI scoring:

● There are two questions for each trait one direct question and one reverse
question answered on a scale of 1 to 7
● Then the score for each trait is taken by taking the average of score for the
direct question and the complement of the score of the reverse question
● In our experiment, questions 1 and reverse of 3 indicate the score for
extroversion
● Questions 2 and the reverse of 4 indicate the score for Neuroticism
Using the scoring for TIPI:
Converting the range of the scores:

● In our experiment, we have alternating sets of questions related to


extraversion and neuroticism
● In each question low and high were labelled 1 and 2 during the analysis
● So, the average score say, ‘s’ for each trait falls in the range 1-2
● Then to compare the score with the TIPI score the score ‘s’, obtained above
was converted to the range 1-7 as:

FINAL SCORE, S = 6*(s-1)+1

● Now both the TIPI score and our final score fall in the same range of 1-7
Using the final scores from images:
Average traits of the population:

1. Average score from TIPI scores for


a. Extraversion is 3.6122
b. Neuroticism is 3.2347
2. Average score from final scores from images for
a. Extraversion is 4.75
b. Neuroticism is 3.9847

These average traits show that the relative estimation from our modelling is
qualitatively accurately but is quantitatively overestimating both the traits in
comparison with the TIPI scores.

Error Measurement:

● From the final scores from images(S) and the TIPI scores(T) for each trait
we have calculated the error margins from the standardized value as:

ERROR =((S-T)/7)*100

● We also computed the Root Mean Square Error of the standardized errors
computed for each individual participant.
The errors computed:

● The mean error for the trait,


○ Extraversion = 28.207 %
○ Neuroticism = 24.271 %
● The Root Mean Square Error for the trait,
○ Extroversion = 33.82 %
○ Neuroticism = 29.6182 %
Conclusions:

1. There is a quantitative overestimation of the scores from this modelling


procedure which is a contributor to the error
2. The error was not so small but considering the number of images tested, it
can be reduced by increasing the number of image sets and having an
individual intensity scale for each image.
3. Also, the population of our experiment are slightly skewed towards
extraversion and that might be a reason for a higher error for the modelling
of extraversion in comparison to neuroticism.
4. So, modelling of traits from choices of visuals is possible!
