The most recurring character for arrogance is Pharaoh, the wife of Minister drunk on her power. Refuse
to see the wrong in his ways, for Pharaoh it is too late for the wife of the minister, she accepts she was
wrong she redeems herself eventually. Pharaoh and Israelites refuse to redeem themselves.

Verses 1 -2

Those are the miraculous sign or the divine signs of the clear and clarifying Book
Opening letters (Alif Laam Raa)

A number of surah bunched or grouped together by the way Allah opens those surahs (Surah 10, Surah
Younus is a Maki Surahs till Surah 23 are Maki Surahs)

Surah 10: Alif Laam Raa those are the divine signs of the wise book

Surah 11 A book whose ayahs miraculous signs were stitched together

Surah 12

Surah 13 Surah Raa’d Alif Laam Meem Raa

Surah 14 Alif Laam Raa

15 Alif Laam Raa

Saying something about the book, revelation itself

WE don’t know the meaning of these letters, what is the purpose of them

An Orientation – a teacher is going to teach you something, the teacher is going to say these are your
limits, this is out of your scope. Allah knows and we don’t know, this reminder is necessary, Reminder
important for us – this story of Yusuf has a lot of detail, Quran skipping on a lot of them. Does not
mention names or other details, Allah is withholding information. Things you need to know for guidance
other thing that make you curious but are not needed for guidance. People become obsessed with
things they are not meant to know, people become obsessed with obscure things.

Those are the miraculous sign or the divine signs of the clear and clarifying Book

The book is clear in on itself, Allah saying that was meant to be made clear is already clear.

Those is for something far, book is reference to the actual book written by Allah that is with Allah and is
far away. A book is something written, the revelations came via Jibrael not as a book.

 The origin of the Quran s from a source that has all the revelations. Ayat of that original book.
 It is a book up in a heaven, what you are reciting Infront of you is actually a Book.

A kitab also refers to a single surah by itself. Kitab means something written and quran means recital,
and a single surah means recital.

We must humble ourselves, to the ay Allah teaches the way Allah speaks. The teacher knows where you
need to begin and what you need to hear fit, the sequence of ayahs is a divine curriculum the first three
ayahs have nothing to do with the story of surah.

Big difference in when you speak and when you write, writing a lot editorial process writing sounds a lot
for formal and structured and organized. In speaking we ae casual, grammatical mistakes and pauses.
Quran is called writing, there is no room of error. Allah merges the two, when he describes as kitab the
written origin and the Quran the Arabic which is recited. The oral recital and the written tradition are
connected.

Al-Mubeen – clear and clarifying book

Clear in itself, book makes itself clear that it is not the word of a human being.

 Mubeen comes from the word Abana from bana which means to sperate, you can tell its not the
product of a human mind.
Jews come to Prophet and ask how did Israelites come to Egypt, Prophet (pbuh) is an Arab
prophet and has no access to Hebrew scriptures, Allah is going to give clear details of what
transpired with this Israelite prophet thousand of years ago, and make it very clear that Prophet
(pbuh) had information that human beings had no access to, the fact that he is a able to tell
these things is going to make it clear to them that this book is the word of Allah.
 Clear in its message, not ambiguous, not abstract, not using words that people cannot
understand. Message clear and straight forward, does not speak in abstract terms. Self
-explanatory,
 Book of Allah is clear in what it wants from me and you; demands a change in the way we feel,
think and control ourselves.

Clarify – the way we should live, the difference between right and wrong, what really happened in
history separating it from the lies; Quran sets the record straight. Clarifies the original purpose.

The Quran in itself is clear, but it is the responsibility of the Ummah to clarify it. Clarify reality for
people. Responsibility left to us by Prophet (pbuh). Believers carry the light of revelation; they take the
torch and lighten up and clarify things. Every Muslim becomes a living testimonial of what word of Allah
did for them, and then they illuminate things for others.

Verse 2 : No doubt about it We sent it down as an arabic recital so that all of you might think and
understand.

 Israelites understand, that when Allah gives this story in Arabic so it is from Allah. What is his
source, nobody has it, story is in even more clear from?
 The Quran is mean to be recited, Allah sent it down to be spoken. The legacy of the Quran is
that it should be spoken, its original experience for humanity is that the original caries Prophet
(pbuh) spoke it. The Quran came as a message that should be recited. Quran is universal, but its
language is Arabic. Allah chose the language of Quran to be Arabic
 Allah prepared the Arabic language for the final revelation. Allah chose the Kabah to be in
dessert, no natural resources, Arab people just herding sheep, they were isolated, no one was
interested in extending their empire; they were going to get nothing, it had no value to the great
empires. Their language also isolated, was not contaminated by foreign languages, no cultural
mixing and no deterioration of language. Their language became very imaginative and
expressive, arabic poetry talks about horses, moon and stars. Arabic means to express yourself
and express your feeling s in the most elaborate way.
o Arabic is rich, loaded expressive language.
o One meaning a river that is overflowing.
o Hazrat Umar said learn Arabic because it enhances your ability to think. Our ability to
think and contemplate on the word of Allah is deteriorating because we are not learning
arabic and the language is deteriorating.
o Arabic became the language of the Believer; it is for the people of the Quran.
In the history of religion, you have people who represent the religious leadership – who knows the
sacred word and are custodians of the religion, the people don’t know the religion and don’t have access
to the religion or very limited access. When this extreme happens and only, they know so they can take
advantage of your ignorance. Religion started belonging to the clergy, the people are held hostage by
the clergy.

ALLAH CREATED TRANSPAREANCY IN THE LEARNING OF QURAN.

The right kind of thought lead to understanding,

Takilun – also means control over one’s emotion. The Arabic is empowering and so moving it directs
your thought sin the right direction so you come to the proper understanding and it will give you the
ability to stand against your own urges, put breaks on our emotions, Arabic quran for mind and the
heart. Aql directly affects the heart. We must become thinkers, Quran is not emphasizing knowledge,
think properly and understand.

Verse 3 : We are the ones in fact that narrate onto you the story in the best possible way it can be told
by way of having inspired this Quran to you (Prophet pbuh) and for sure up until now you were truly
from those unaware.

Nahnu naqusa- double iterate itself, to highlight it is being told by Allah The way this story is being told
is attributed to Allah, Allah is taking full credit of not only way of telling the story but telling it in a
particular way.

Kassa – kisa can be used in the meaning of story. Quran uses asateer meaning legends and stories. kisa
is a historical account, any narration in which the speaker is taking you step by step. Kasa literally means
step by step. The one narrating the story decides the order in which they will tell the story, what comes
first and then second and then so on. Not just what they tell, what the speaker wants to you to feel,
when to introduce a character and how to chose words, The story boarding is being done by Allah
Himself.

Allah says that this is the Best story – BIG CLAIM

Quran gave stories to us for a big purpose- to guide humanity on what they need.

Allah says He tells the best story - there is no one who can tell a better story in which every element of
it, every character of it, every line of it , every event in it will have guidance in it for countless people for
countless generations for countess cultures; they will all get guidance from the same story and will get
guidance that will make their life better from the same exact story from every single scene from every
single line.

Ahsan al kasas – kasas means to narrate, infinitive form.

 The best of all stories - Allah is the architect of the story of human, every one of us a has a story.
Profound moments and stories in our life and careers. Historians try to capture the story of a
nation, a region or a major event. The historians will not be able to tell personal accounts for
example what happened in the King’s bedroom or what talk did he have with his children. All
stories public or private, so many people have passed before us; Allah decide that a handful of
them are so important, not complete stories but some scene from their lives that they are so
important that He chose them for His Book and these will guide humanity till the end of time.
Story of Musa, Story of People of Cave – the worlds had lot of other stories going on.
 Telling you the story in the best way it can be told – Everything that Allah is going to tell us,
there is no better way to tell this or to illustrate this for my benefit to learn something that I
need n my life. While studying Quran, you must pause and reflect why did Allah tell me this little
detail in this story, what do I learn from this? No frivolous detail, no detail for artistic feels.
 We are telling you the best of the story – some conversations and some back and forth that is
important, Allah chose snippets that were best for humanity and pulled it out form the larger
story. The little things are heavier than all the story put together because of the value they have
in terms of guidance.

From all the human beings, Allah chose a few of them to tell their story and from their complete life and
story Allah further chose little to share because that little has a lot of substance and guidance for
humanity.

Allah is saying that the way He is telling this story is different from the previous scriptures and you are
going get some beauty from it, retrieve guidance from it that was not accessible before, open up
reflection that never opened up before.

Allah is telling the Prophet (pbuh) that only you are getting this way of storytelling, this is special to
Quran only. This recital is unique.

What makes the Quran’s way of storytelling unique?

Allah is teaching us what to pay attention to and what to skip. He is extremely selective in what to tell
us. Allah decided to emphasize something, He is teaching us what to focus on and what does not
deserve our focus. Allah decided to withhold details with a purpose, He wants us to go from one step to
the next to go straight to what matters.

The norm of Quran is that no story is in complete detail in one place, why not? The purpose of the
Quran is not t tell you the story the purpose of Quran is guidance. Each Surah has its own purpose and
theme and what relates to that purpose is shared and adds to the same lesson. The pieces of the stories
are connected to present the lesson and guidance.

Surah Yusuf is unique, is like no other. Stands on its own, complete story presented in one place and
every piece and every event in the Surah is leading towards a larger theme. Everything that is
mentioned, we need it for guidance in our life.

As Prophet (pbuh) is reciting the Surah he is also knowing it for the first time, a moment before
Prophet(pbuh) is going to say it, he has no clue of what he going to say. Every ayah is a new discovery
about the Prophet he never knew.

Prophet (pbuh) was given this surah in the hardest year of his life; He lost his wife (a big support for
him), He lost his Uncle who was a financial, political and social support for him. There is mothing holding
he maccans back, in torturing or going after him. He is already going through the mental and emotional
anguish of having lost his partner and his uncle and the maccans are at their worst. In midst of this, He
was given this story.
Yusaf is tied to the word asaf which means sadness. Yusaf is going to go through a lot of turmoil and
sadness and on the end, he is going to see a peaceful resolution. Allah has been telling about the Musa
and Pharaoh a lot, he drowned and had a violent end. Prophet (pbuh) gets worried whenever he hears
about the pharaoh. He does not want this for his people, he loves them and wants a peaceful resolution.
Allah is giving him comfort through this surah.

The story is a sequence of scenes, verse 4 starts with a scene and this is a conversation between a father
and a son. Conversation behind closed doors.

Verse 4: When Yusuf said to his father, my beloved father it is certainly I who has seen 11 stars and
the sun and the mon, I saw all of them bowing their head and prostrating for me.

This story was revealed in Year of Grief, soon after this was the night journey of ascension and Prophet
(pbuh) met prophet Yusuf.

This conversation happened privately, there is no way someone could have been in this room and this
conversation is now being repeated thousands of years later.

The child is initiating the conversation, approaching the father and speaking to him. A profound teaching
of the Quran on the type of relationship that should exist between parent and children, between father
and his children. A child should feel comfortable about talking anything with their father, they can just
approach their parents. They should not think they will get upset, or they will think I am crazy rather
they should think that mum and dad are going to be exceptionally good listener and they are going to
pay close attention. Children love to talk, but we are not really listening. There are moments when our
children really want to communicate with us, and they pick up on us that we are not really listening.
There is an age when children are in desperate need of our attention, there is something behind what
they are saying. An attentive parent would be listening to the story of the child but would know that
there is something behind it. Create a comfort zone for the child that you don’t have to ask the
question, the child comes and tell you himself.

Guidance for kids also, when something is going on you should talk to your parent and not think that
they are not going to listen to it anyway. Never listen is bit of a jump, a child should know that they have
the right to be heard and they should go and make an attempt to be heard.

Legacy of Yaqub that your children come and tell you their problems, that the parent made their
children feel protected, nurtured, welcomed and so much of a friend that the son comes and tell even
the dream he had.

How can parents relate to their children? Take part in what the children like to do and involve them in
what you are doing, be a companion of each other in things that you like and their interests. Experiences
matter, our parenting is more about buying things for kids. Moments and experiences become pillars in
their life. A bond that is built between parents and their children by shared experiences, by doing
things together.

The word father is repetitive even it is taken out it makes sense. Alay used this twice, why? This is
highlighting that for Yusuf the go to for him was his father. This is Allah teaching us that we should
nurture our children to the point that we are their support, their refuge. Parenting done the right way.
Yusuf says My beloved father. The added on ta suggests two things: love and respect. In order to teach
our children respect, we don’t have to become dictators, we do not have to become authoritarians. In
order to teach them love, we do not let our children cross the line. We need to maintain a balance
between the two, they both go hand in hand.

He is seeing the night; stars are only visible at night and he is seeing stars. Along with the stars you
should see the moon, but he says he saw the elven stars and the sun and the moon, even the order is
odd. When the night ends, he should see the sun, but he says I saw the eleven stars and the sun and the
moon.

Some have seen this in celestial way, that the sun is essentially a star and star are bodies in heaven that
emit light and moon is put in the end because it does not emit light of its own, it reflects light.

By this strange sequence, it being told that Yusuf is already very disturbed by what he saw and he also
knows that what looks like the sun and the stars and the moon are not actually so or it seems he knows
they are not the sun and the stars and the moon. He has eleven brothers, and sun and moon could be
father and mother, he can figure this much out.

Symbolism of stars for siblings and sun and moon for parents, these images are significant. The stars for
the night sky are beauty, they are also source of comfort and guidance (only for people on journey). In
life we do not depend on our siblings, but there are times when we need their guidance and support.
They can become an essential need at times. A sibling should be some one who beautifies your life, they
are a part of life and in moment of need they will be there for you. The sun and the moon are important
for daily life, they are fundamental to our survival. The moon is responsible for the movement of the
tides, these tidal movements keep the pole warm and hence regulate the earth’s temperature or else
we will enter another ice age. A big part of the sustainably of the life on earth ids the way the oceans
function which is linked to the phases of the moon. The earth revolves around the sun and moon is
revolving around the earth. The two dimensions of the parental relationship, at a certain age we are
running to our parents for care and as our parents age they slowly become dependent on us and turn to
us for more care and need, even when they are coming to us we are the beneficiaries.

Inni – Certainly, I. no doubt about it I. The purpose of inna is to remove doubt. In his mind, it is
something hard to believe and he is like I seriously saw this for real. When children experience
something shocking, they add such words like really, to add weight to what they are trying to say. He is
already pre-empting that dad I respect you and love you but what I am going to say may upset you or
you might not believe it. Sometimes you might need to have a conversation with your loved ones that
might get you into trouble because it sounds bad, but you have nowhere else to go and you have to talk
to them about it because there needs to be transparency in the relationship. When there is
transparency in a relationship, then respect and love remain. Transparency helps solve extremely hard
problems.

When he gets to the moon, he is so disturbed by what he is going to say next that he stops. Then he says
after a pause and he says I saw them. He is saying it again I saw, the first-time he just saw them and the
second time he saw them doing something that they do not actually do. He is saying that Do you know
what I saw. He gets to the part that is bothering him, he saw something out of the ordinary. One
interpretation is that it’s the part that was unusual, so he says it again.
 As he is speaking, he has already interpreted the dream. Raaituhum is the plural for people, for
inanimate objects the plural has the female form raaitumuhuna.
 The li in the jumla failia is brought early, it is for tajeeb a shock. He is like For me! he is bothered
by him being the center of attentions.

Verse 5:
My young son do not narrate your dream to your brothers then they might make a scheme against you
for sure, without a doubt the devil when it comes to human beings is certainly an obvious an open
enemy.
Yabunaiyya – it’s a loving phrase, my young son, my little son. They are already having a conversation;
he is calling him again as my son – this requires attention because they are not far way and the purpose
of calling some one is to get attention. The way you address someone with love and respect is a form of
comfort. In relationships, parents do not tell their children that they love them, and they don’t call them
with loving names. Hey beautiful boy come here, my lovely daughter, when you cushion your phrase this
way what does it do to the listener is that they realize that we are loved and respected. A good advice is
not attractive because of they way it being told, can make it a lot easier to absorb if they simple
addressed you in a lovely manner. The tone and words have a lot of difference. Loving, protective
comforting tone for his son instead of just giving an instruction. In a relationship, when you have a say
over another person, you feel you can talk however you want they are your family they are not going
anywhere. You do not talk to someone of authority in the same way, there is decorum and you are all
dignified in front of guests. The best of you are the ones who are at the best behavior to their own
family. We can not be nice and kind to our own family, cannot compliment and have to say harsh things.
Descending all sorts of comfort to his son; there is ease that dawns on his son. The way we talk to our
children, the comfort we provide and the acceptance we give them has a lot of impact on our kids. Their
comes a time when kids have developed so much resentment towards their parents; you never
acknowledge me, never say anything good about me, never talk to me, when was the last time you
hugged me. Our kids never grow up, they need love and comfort from us. Nurtured, empowered, and
made to feel confident about himself! This upbringing leads to saving of a nation, a seed is implanted
that is going to grow into a large tree – the validation that was given by father to his son.

Don’t tell your brothers- la taksus not do not inform, do not say or do not talk. Kasas - An interesting
anchor dropped by Allah. Referring to the same word, the father is saying don’t tell this story. Allah in
His wisdom knows when to tell someone something, Allah knew in His wisdom when to revel this story
to Yusuf, the father who is Divinely guided knows that some stories are not meant to be shared or told
to some people. We need to have wisdom in our life that what things we should share and what things
we should not share with people, at what time and what people we must share with. Especially in
family, we do not need to tell everyone everything if they cannot be trusted because of their behavior or
because of their abusive behavior or because they were unable to handle a similar situation in the past
or they have done wrong to you before when you entrusted them.

Why not tell your brothers? The idea or sajaddah is to be overpowered. There is a conflict in which one
is in the position of superiority and one I being suppressed, it seems at this point that Yusuf is being
suppressed and eventually the brothers are going to be in a state where they are going to be
overpowered and humbled because of what has been granted to Yusuf. The dream depicts an image of
conflict and a suggestion that one is surrendering so there is some tension. The father did not say that
don’t tell your mother, because the entity that might stir trouble is the elven stars referring to the
brothers.

Ru’yaka – your dream, puts Yusuf at center of attention and some position of authority and superiority.
They will not be able to stand this, by knowing this dream they will know that the gift of prophethood
has been given to Yusuf and they are not going to like this. There is remarkable similarity to life of
Prophet, the Jews did not like the fact that the Prophet was not from amongst them. The Jews have
difficulty accepting the fact that Prophet is getting the Book, something that they used to get. They later
said that we are the worthy ones and Prophet is supposed to be blessed by God too, that does not sit
good with them.
The father is very observant, he knew that the son needed comforting before saying anything else.
Yaqub is very observant and aware of every word and emotional expression that is taking place in front
of him. He was concerned about well being of all of his children; those who do good do not get into
trouble and do things without you asking of them get duas and affection of parents as compared to kids
who do not listen and misbehave. Some kids need tough love and others need soft love.
Father knows they will not take responsibility and find someone to put blame on. Dad knows how they
think. Yusuf is a kid being told do not tell your brothers, avoid this conversation at all cost. He is being
told to not tell his siblings; older siblings are ones you look up to. The older siblings are role models for
you, you look up to and you want to emulate and be like them, constant admiration, This is being taken
away from Yusuf, don’t tell them about this good that happened to you, they have a toxic relationship.
We do not want to talk about harsh realities with kids, we think they are too young to handle. Quran is
teaching us that sometimes there are realities inside of families, which are not in our control, you need
to be able to warn your children about them. You need to be careful of these people, abuse happened
from family members. YOUR INTREST IS IN PROTECING YOUR CHILD. Difficult situations in families
happen, rebellious child or harmful habits, the parents need to give the children an orientation on how
to handle these situations. Love and nurture and tell your children this is danger. Take what ever
precaution you can take; do our part and leave the rest to Allah.

The brothers will have a scheme sketched against you, certainly will make scheme and especially when it
comes to you. Kaid – scheme, scheming done in secrecy, it has many steps, something harmful and
disgusting brewing inside, something treacherous and it eventually come out and you will not know until
its last moment when nothing can be done. The Dad is saying that when you will tell your brothers, they
will smile at you face and then they will make an evil scheme against you for sure and you will not know
of until the very last moment. The dad knows because he knows his kids, parents KNOW.

This is not a new game, the one who is playing games with your family is not your brothers. They are
only pawns in his hands, they do not even know that they are pawns in his hands. The one playing
games is the devil, and he has been doing this for an exceptionally long time. He will do this to each one
of us if he gets a chance, he is going to come at us with jealousy, suspicion, assumptions, judgment, lust
and greed, hopelessness, and despair. He is going to get to us with what every way he can, and right
now the father is telling his son that your brothers are not evil but behind all this is a much larger
problem – DEVIL open enemy. The devil will try to take off the straight path, will make the jealousy so
toxic and feelings so crazy that they will live in a world of their own, the feelings will create an
alternative universe in their minds where they will justify all kinds of things to themselves because of
their feelings and he will keep injecting into those feelings so that they continue growing out of
proportion and they can not see reality themselves. The father diagnosis that the children have ill
feelings and instead of taking the right path and addressing them, the children allow the feelings to
brew by keeping it amongst them selves and talking only to those who will reinforce them.
The devil felt the same way about Adam, he knew the sajadah is coming but he kept quiet. The angles
asked, but he was quiet and kept brewing the jealousy inside. That is exactly what he wants the children
of adam to fell and act in similar way to deviate us form the right path.

The devil is Mubeen – clear and clarifying. Devil has made his intention clear and Allah has made it clear
in his Book what the devil intends. Devil will clarify for you what he wants you to do.
DEVIL is the real enemy – he is the one you must develop hatred for, not your brothers or people. When

No family is immune from complications, there is going to be someone who would stir trouble whether
you like it or not. That is how Allah made us. Allah decided that you have to be around some people and
they are a trial for you and you are a trial for them and you are tied to each other till the akhira. It is
decree of Allah for better or worse, we have to let go of the idea of some kind of a life where the people
in our life, none of them are going to be a source of difficulty and that the people who are the source of
difficulty are the devil, they are not. They failed to recognize when the devil was able to use them
successfully, when they were not able to let go of their pride or their ill-conceived notions.
