Aaron Douglass’s “Harriet Tubman”

After years of discovery,
discovery I have found out more information about my family history. Learning is a long lasting
experience, and it can develop into many manifestations. One of the terrific, powerful findings of my research this
year dealt with knowing more about my distant cousins, comprehending the history of the Lowe family, and
witnessing extra facts about the Sessoms family too. From reading a PDF file about some of ancestors (whose
names are Susanna Turner, James Thompson Claud, Sarah Claud, Milly Bozeman, etc.) in an archaeological study
(about Southampton County, Virginia) to digitally communicating with distant relatives, exciting disclosures
have existed in the horizon. This work is about showing past history, outlining present realities, and promoting
inspiration for the future. We desire a great future for humanity, and that is achieved by us working together for
the common cause of justice. Part of my story deals with my family migrations. For example, my great-
grandmother Effie Sarah Bryant’s descendants traveled into places like Philadelphia and New Jersey (from Halifax
County, North Carolina & Virginia). Guy Franklin Claud’s children readily migrated to Philadelphia, and other
places in Virginia. They existed from Southampton County, Virginia. Throughout the ages of time, black people
have displayed courage, resiliency, and strength. The creative force of jazz, intellectual pursuits, and the legacy of
social activism are intertwined in black culture. True Black Love means that folks are acting together in harmony
with building, and establishing solutions. We are descendants of a strong people. Our ancestors suffered the worst
slavery in human history. Still, we are here to be teachers, lawyers, community leaders, scientists, and other
contributors to society. That shows the power of the Creator and of black people. I honor my Bantu ancestry. It is
the perfect time to stand up for freedom, and to advocate for the liberation of our communities internationally.
This is our destiny.
New Discoveries of My Family Tree
On My Father’s Side
I am related to numerous people. The Upshur family is related to my paternal family. A lot of this new
information that I found out during the Summer of 2019 is very interesting. First, George and Esther Perkins lived
in Northampton County, Virginia. That is located at the Eastern Shore. George Perkins was born in 1815 and
Esther Perkins was born in 1816. They had many children including Julia Perkins who was born in 1835. Julia
Perkins married Johnson Brickhouse (who was my 3rd great grandfather). Johnson Brickhouse was born in 1826,
and he was an African American Union war veteran. Both Julia Perkins and Johnson Brickhouse had the
following children: Ann Eliza Brickhouse (1857-1921), Jno Lee Brickhouse (1858-?), Esther Brickhouse Bailey (1862-
1955), Martha Brickhouse (1867-?), and Maggie Brickhouse (1871-?). Ann Eliza Brickhouse was my 3rd great aunt
and she lived in Virginia. Ann married twice. Her first husband was James Burton. Her second husband was
James Kelly and they wed on February 12, 1893 at Northampton County, Virginia. Nollar Burton Upshur was the
child from Ann Brickhouse and James Burton (1848-1931). Nollar Burton Upshur lived from 1877 to 1961, and she
was my first cousin. Nollar Burton Upshur married Ruben B. Upshur on the date of April 26, 1898 at
Northampton County, Virginia. Nolla Burton Upshur and Ruben Benjamin Upshur had the following children:
Ollife Upshur (1899-1995), James Velvet Upshur (1901-1975), Milton Alfred Upshur (1904-1977), Marrie Upshur
(1906-?), Ershie Upshur (1907-?), Reuben Usphur (1909-1939), Curtis V. Upshur (1913-1984), Alice G. Usphur
(1915-1938), Andrew Philip Upshur (1915-1995), John Thomas Upshur (1917-2012), Baylise Upshur (1919-2014), Belle
E. Upshur (1921-?), Helen Burton Upshur (1923-2006), and Evangeline Virginia Upshur (1921-1995). Baylise
Upshur was born in Northampton County, Virginia on May 14, 1919. She married Willie Coleman and they had a
child named Velma Coleman. Velma Coleman married Horace Gene Roscoe on the date of October 4, 1974 at
Virginia Beach, Virginia. Velma Coleman was born on March 5, 1948. Velma Coleman was born in the Bronx,
NYC. She lived in Georgia until her transition in 1996. She converted to Islam to be known as Velma
Muhammad. Velma Muhammad's daughter is my fourth cousin Anjirlic B. Aminu. She was born in the year of
1967. Therefore, Northampton County, Virginia is a location where tons of my paternal relatives originated from.
The couple is named Ada Doggett and James Gus Henry Roberson

The Roberson and Sessoms Families

My 2nd great aunt Ada Doggett lived from 1890 to 1960. She married James Gus Henry Roberson at Halifax
North Carolina on September 16, 1909. Their descendants included many members of the Roberson family. Their
descendants are also related to me. Their children are Mary Clara Roberson Sessoms, Elbert lee Roberson, Arthur
Delano Robertson, and Bessie L. Roberson-Chance.

The Sessoms family has a long history in Virginia and North Carolina. The Sessoms family (that is related to me)
came from North Carolina, and then many of them migrated into Virginia. One patriarch of the Sessoms family
was Thomas Jefferson Sessoms. He lived from 1907 at Hertford, North Carolina to December 31, 1961 at Tarboro,
Edgecombe, North Carolina. Tom married my cousin Mary Clara Roberson (1910-2000) at the date of January 5,
1928 at Martin, North Carolina. Tom and Mary’s children were Thomas Clinton Sessoms Jr. (1929-2006), Rev.
Arthur Marion Sessoms (1930-2016), Bishop Harman L. Sessoms (1933-present), Clara Elizabeth Sessoms (1935-

Mable Louse Roberson (1938-present) on the date of December 22, 1958 at Edgecombe, North Carolina. They had
the following children: Cottie Marie Sessoms (1959-2013), Eric T. Sessoms (1962-present), Stevie Sessoms (1962-
present), Vernon Sessoms Junior (1964-present), Parnell Aundre Sessoms (1966-present), and Troy Sessoms.
These children were born at Newport News, Virginia. My third cousin Vernon Sessoms Junior was born on July 1,
1964 at Newport News, Virginia. She married Gloria Lenora Robinson on October 19, 1991 at Newport News,
Virginia. Their children are Candasee Camilla Sessoms (she was born on February 21, 1994 at Hampton, Virginia)
and Vernon Sessoms Jr.

(1907-1971) and Bashie Ann Whitmore (1907-1963). Clarise Doggett and I share the same great-grandfather of Carl
Doggett (1886-1968). Clarise Doggett’s children are Velicia Renna Spencer (1966-present), Clara Mae Strawter
(1951-2012), and Willeva Strawter (1952-present). Clara Mae Strawter lived a life of service. She was my second
cousin and was born at May 15, 1951 at Stuart, Martin County, Florida. She married Gerald Arnett Williams, and

an educator, an author, he works in the community, and he studied at Valdosta State University). Clara Mae
Strawter Williams lived in Jacksonville, Florida. Jerome Alexander Stone Sr. and Clarise Doggett raised Clara.
Clara graduated from Martin County High School in 1970. She graduated from college at Edward Waters College
with a BS in physical education. She worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield in Jacksonville, Florida for 35 years. Clara’s
half-sisters are Luvenia Brooks, Theresa Stone, and Wylene Leonard. His half-brothers are Attorney Jerome A.
Stone Jr., Jerome Stone, and Demarius Souter. Clara’s granddaughter is my second cousin Ashli Madison
Williams of Adel, Georgia. Velicia Renna Spencer or the daughter of Clarise Doggett is my 2nd cousin. Velicia
Spencer was born on November 15, 1966. She married Ricardo Cardell Bryant on the date of June 28, 1986 at
Martin County, Florida. They have a daughter named Zandria Bashane Bryant, who is my 2nd cousin. Velicia and
Ricardo divorced at the date of June 8, 1994. Velicia Bryant now lives in Florida, and she is a successful
businesswoman. Zandria works to defend the lives of people experiencing autism.

(1950-2005). The image on the right shows Courtland, Virginia.

On My Mother’s Side
The Flythe family is certainly related to me. My mother always said that we were related to the Flythes. This is
part of the long story about the Flythe family. Long ago in 1842, Sarah Claud was born. She was the daughter of
Zilphy Claud (1820-1893). She lived from 1842 to 1892. Later, Sarah Claud married a man named Tom Hill. They
had the following children: Adeline Hill (1862-1930), Matt Hill (1868-1931), Scap Hill (1868-?), Susanna Sarah M.
Hill (1868-?), Roberta Hill (1875-1935), and Rev. James Thompson Claud (1857-1926). Roberta Hill was born on
September 2, 1875. She married a man named William Theo Scott (1865-1935) in 1892 at Southampton County,
Virginia. They had numerous children by the names of: Millard Filmore Scott (1892-1959), Lena Mae Flythe (1893-
1962), Sarah Francis Scott (1894-1954), Nettie Virginia Scott (1897-1986), John Quincy Adams Scott (1898-?),
Albert Scott (1899-1994), Inez Scott (1901-1961), William Scott Jr. (1903-?), Guy Claudius Scott (1905-1965), Minnie
S. Hogan (1907-?), Fannie Scott (1909-?), Woodrow W. Scott (1910-1969), Ezar Scott (1910-?), Hazel Scott (1920-?),
and Elijah Perry Hill.

Lena Mae Scott married into the Flythe family. Lena was born on January 6, 1893. She or Lane Mae Scott married
Henry Hersey Flythe (1873-1963) on February 28, 1909 at Norfolk, Virginia. The couple had the following
children: Hattie Flythe (1911-?), Harvey Lenton Flythe (1912-1957), Neva Flythe (1915-1962), Euince Flythe (1916-
1999), Pretlow Garland Flythe (1919-1986), Virginia Flythe (1920-2004), and Lena Scott Flythe (1928-1994).
William Henry Flythe or the son of Henry Hersey Flythe had two wives. His first wife was a woman named Sarah
Clyde Darden Flythe Joe (1913-1987). William and Sarah wed on the date of September 24, 1934. Together, William
and Sarah Flythe had the following children: Wilhelmina Darden Flythe (1935-present), Cornelle Warren Flythe
(1936-2007), Wallace Randolph Flythe (1938-1993), Maxine Deloris Flythe (1939-present), and Vivian Vanasse
Flythe (1939-1939).

January 17, 1944 was when Sarah and William had a divorce at Virginia. Later, William Henry Flythe married
Virginia Mae Bailey (1926-2000) at Courtland, Virginia on the date of February 7, 1948. William and Virginia had
the following children: James Clifton Bryant (1945-1991), Melvin Rudolph Flythe (1947-present), William
McKenney Flythe Sr. (1949-2016), Brenda May Flythe (1950-present), Harvey Hudson Flythe (1952-present), and
Hazel Angela Flythe (1962-1963). The late, great William McKenney Flythe Sr. was my third cousin. He passed
away on March 25, 2016. He worked in civic organizations, he was part of the NAACP, and he worked in
ministries, and he lived his life in service to fellow people in a humble fashion. William McKenney Flythe Sr.
married Laverne Saunders on the date of February 9, 1970 at Nansemond, Virginia (or Suffolk, Virginia today).
William and Laverne Flythe had the following children: Dameyon Parris hFlythe (1971-1997), Darrell Obadiah
Flythe (1975-present), Wilvern Major Flythe (1977-present), Angela Flythe, Lorraine Davis, and William M. Flythe
Jr. William M. Flythe Jr. married Michele Rene Brockington on August 8, 1998 at Chesapeake Virginia. Their
daughter is Taylor Rene Flythe (who is my 5th cousin. She was born on July 10, 1999 at Chesapeake, Virginia). So,
these African American families go back long centuries.

New Haven, Connecticut

Velvet Claude

Frank T. Claud (1861-1948) was a famous Claud family member. He at first married Josephine Worrell (1864-1884).
She passed away at an early age, and Frank T. Claud later married Elizabeth Whitehead (1868-?). Frank T. Claud
was the descendant of Zilphy Claud or my 5th great grandmother. Frank T. Claud’s great granddaughter is Velvet
Yvonia Claud. She was born in 1960, and her parents are Obadiah Claud (1931-2014) and Mertle Inez Wright (1934-
present). Velvet Claud’s siblings are: Colia Inez Claud (1956-present), Cornelia Ginger Claud (1958-present), Abby
Claud (1964-present), Abigale Claud (1964-1964), and Robin Olympia Claud. Velvet Claud married Gary Jerome
Chambers (1954-2010), and she studied at James Madison University and at the University of New Haven. She
went to Southampton High School. Velvet Claud her sisters are active in fitness today. Cornelia Ginger Claude
had a daughter named Cenequanta Claud (1974-present). Cenequanta Claud’s daughter is Sierra Claud (she was
born on December 4, 1997 at Richmond, Virginia). Sierra Claud is my 6th cousin.
Deacon Malachi Winford Barnes (1926-2016)

Rosa Barnes

On early April of 2019, I had an email discussion with my distant cousin Rosa Barnes. She is from Branchville,
Virginia and lives in Lillington, North Carolina. She went to Riverview High School at Courtland, Virginia and
studied at Norfolk State University. Ancestry.com confirmed that we are cousins along with the genealogical
research outlining our kinship. I found out that both of us are part of the Claud family from Southampton
County, Virginia. Rosa Barnes grandparents are Guy Franklin Claud Sr. (1896-1966) and Viola Bell Rogers (1896-
1971). Rosa Barnes’ parents are Malachi Winford Barnes (1926-2016) and Sudie Odell Claud (1927-2003). Malachi
Winford Barnes was a strong hard worker just like Sudie Odell Claud. Malachi Winford Barnes was a Deacon of a
church. He lived to be 89 years old. His parents were John and Virgie Barnes (who had 8 children of 4 boys and 4
girls). Deacon Barnes worked as a farmer, carpenter, and a religious member of Galilee Baptist Church. Malachi
was a very righteous man with four children whose names are of course Rosa Barnes, Guy C. Barnes, Susie L.
Edwards, and Yvette Hooper. Rosa Barnes has a child named Brian Lamont Ivey (1975-present). Brian’s father is
named Junius Thomas Ivey Jr. Barnes said that her grandparents Guy and Viola Claud had 13 children. The names
of the 13 children of Guy and Viola Claud are Doris Virginia Claud Moody (1918-2007), Naomi Claud (1920-1950),
Oliver Theodore Claud (1923-present), Guy Claud Jr. (1925-1972), Saudi Odell Claud (1927-2005), Lilia Lorean
Claude (1929-2005), Beady Gabrilla Claud (1930-2004), Obadiah Claud (1931-2014), Webster Claud (1933-1997),
Israel Claud (1936-present), Lula Viola Claud (1937-2013), Mildred Claud, Frank Claud, and James Emanuel Claud
(1942-present). Rosa Barnes knows about a lot of my relatives since we are both kin. Her aunt was Lula Worrell.
Many of the Claud traveled into Philadelphia and New York State for better job opportunities. She knows all
about the Shiloh Baptist Church and the Galilee Baptist Church too (as she attended both churches as a child).
She was Danier Elsie Lowe Fortune (1917-2007) who is on the left. Elgin Madison Lowe Sr. (1914-2000) is the
person on the right. He has been an educator for over three decades in the Suffolk area of Virginia. He was a well-
known writer and educator.

The Lowe family

One of the greatest discoveries that I have found dealt with the Lowe family. Months ago, I heard of the Lowe
family. Yet, I didn’t find out more intensive research until recently. My fifth great grandmother Zilphy Claud
lived in Southampton County. She was born in the year of 1820. Zilphy lived to see the end of the Civil War and
the period of Reconstruction in the United States of America. Zilphy Claud had a daughter named Lydia Claud.
She was born in 1842. Lydia’s sister was my fourth great grandmother named Sarah Claud. In the year of 1867,
Lydia Claud (or my 5th great aunt) married a man named Willis Sykes. Lydia and Willis had the following sons:
Philip Sykes (1861-?), James Sykes (1865-?), and Percy H. Sykes (1872-1948). Lydia and Willis had the following
daughters: Mattie Sykes (1874-1942), Louisa Anna Sykes (1876-1955), Willie Corean Rose (1881-1949), Mobie Lee
Sykes (1886-1932), Jennie Sykes, Walter Sykes, and Mattie Sue Sykes (1874-1942). Lydia Claud’s daughter Louisa
Anna Sykes was born in Southampton County, Virginia at 1876. Her descendants would be members of the Lowe
family, and they would travel from Southampton County into Suffolk, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Philadelphia, and
beyond. Louisa A. Sykes married Charles Wesley Lowe (1873-1954) on the date of September 23, 1896 at
Southampton County, Virginia. Charles Wesley Lowe had a twin brother named Robert Candy Lowe who
passed away in the year of 1873. Later, Louisa and Charlie traveled into Nansemond at Suffolk, Virginia. Louisa
A. Sykes and Charlie Wesley Lowe had the following eight children: Howard H. Lowe (1898-1958), Flossie Baylee
Lowe (1899-?), Palease Lowe (1900-?), Charlie James Lowe (1901-1967), Palease Lower (1900-?), Elgin Madison
Lowe Sr. (1914-2000), Danier Elsie Lowe (1917-2000. She was a well-known woman in the Lowe family history),
and Joseph Isaac Lowe (1919-1974).

Charlie James Lowe married Willott White on the date of June 30, 1923 at Suffolk, Virginia. By this time, many
members of the Lowe family lived in Suffolk. They had the following children of Theopolis Melton Lowe (born
1926), Cordy Lowe (born 1928), Edward McKinley Lowe (1930-2013), and Ester Lowe (who died when she was an
infant). Edward McKinley Lowe married Shirley Jones (1932-1995) on September 16, 1949 at Suffolk, Virginia.
Edward and Shirley Lowe had the following children: Jacqueline Mildred Lowe (born 1951), Louis Collie Lowe
(born 1953), Gregory Bertram Lowe (born 1954), and Edward Lowe Jr. Louis Collie Lowe married Toinette Denise
Williams first on July 19, 1980. They had a divorce. Later, Louis Collie Lowe married Alecia Bryant on the date of
September 5, 1998. Louis and Alecia had a daughter named Collecia Imani Lowe (or my fifth cousin) on the date
of February 17, 1999. The Lowe family are definitely related to the Claud family and other African American
families of Virginia.
Howard H. Lowe at first married a woman named Josephine Mayfield on the date of April 8, 1917 at Virginia.
They divorced (on May 9, 1921), and Howard married Frankie Knight on February 9, 1924 at Nansemond County,
Virginia (or at Suffolk, Virginia). Howard participated in the U.S. Army during World War I at France. 🇫🇷 Both
Howard and Frankie would live in Philadelphia until their divorce. Howard was buried in Suffolk, Virginia.
Flossie Baylee Lowe married Levi Smith and later divorced him on September 23, 1938. She would later marry
James W. Falucon at Philadelphia. Flossie would be very religious before her passing. Danier Elsie Lowe lived
from 1917 to 2007. She married three times to Peter Alhert Fortune, Henry Epps, and Paul Theodore Robinson.
She had a son named Calvin Lowe Fortune (1934-2000). Danier loved fashion, music, and living life. Elgin
Madison Lowe Sr. was my second cousin. Elgin Madison Lowe Sr. lived in the Suffolk area with his family, and he
was born on March 15, 1914. He courted a beautiful woman named Lois Elaine Ballard. They married at Norfolk,
Virginia on September 23, 1933. They or Elgin and Lois had the following children: Jean Denyce Lowe (1936-
present), Elgin Madison Lowe Jr. (1939-present), and Sandra Marilyn Lowe (1943-present). Jean Denyce Lowe is
my third cousin, and she met a man in Indianapolis named Hubert Lathen Teague (1928-2004). The couple
married and had many children which are the following: Marsha L. Teague (1957-present), Brad Teague (1970-
present), Ryan Teague, and Lance Teague. The Teague family moved into Southern California. One of the most
important parts of the Lowe family story is about how Elgin Madison Lowe Sr. wrote an autobiography about his
family’s life back in 1999. Elgin Madison Lowe Sr. was an outstanding Suffolk educator. He retired from Suffolk
Public Schools in 1976.

Elgin Madison Lowe Sr. (1914-2000) passed away in 2000. His five grandchildren are Mark, Brad, Denise, Marsha,
and Lance. His five great-grandchildren are Beniah, Ryan, Erin, Jenifer, and Justin. His nephew is Calvin, and his
niece is Shirley. Elgin Madison Lowe Sr. was my second cousin. I am related to him. The late Elgin Madison Lowe
Sr. wrote a book about his origins entitled, “Origin of the Lowe family of Southampton County, Virginia: 1815-
1993.” He traced his ancestors to a man named Madison Lowe (1814-1895) who married a woman named Jane.
Jane was of Native American and/or African American descent. Madison Lowe is of European heritage. When I
did further research, I know of her full name as Jane D. Ridley. Jane Ridley lived from 1832 to 1912. Jane was born
in Nansemond, Virginia (or in the Suffolk region), and she passed away at Hertford, North Carolina. Madison
Lowe and Jane Ridley married at ca. 1850. Elgin wrote that Madison and Jane had 11 children and their
descendants live in Virginia, Georgia, Indiana, Colorado, California, Louisiana, and other areas of America.

Madison Lowe and Jane Ridley’s children were: Jane Lowe (1840-?), Margaret Lowe (1850-1929), William R. Lowe
(1853-1920), Louisa Lowe (1862-1956), Alfred Lowe (1863-?), Thomas Jeffeson Lowe (1864-1940), Elizabeth Jane
Lowe (1867-1944), John Ivory Lowe (1868-1945), Robert Candy Lowe (1873-1873), Jollie Lowe (1873-?), Charles
Wesley Lowe (1875-1952), Robert Lee Lowe (1877-1952), Maria Lowe Handy, Ben Ridley (1873-?), and Edward
Ridley (1875-?).

Madison Lowe and James D. Ridley's daughter named Elizabeth Jane Lowe lived from 1867 to 1944. She married
Robert Ishmael Doles (1864-?). The children of Elizabeth and Robert are the following: Alvin Benjamin Doles
(1887-1964), Robert I. Doles (1888-1956), James Oliver Doles (1889-?), Eura Virginia Doles (1891-1937), Lelia M.
Doles (1894-1977), and John Henry Doles (1895-1982). Eura Virginia Doles married Robert Roger Brown (1890-?).
Eura and Robert Brown had the following children: Harmon Brown (1914-2004), Madison D. Brown (1917-1981),
Virginia Jane Brown (1919-1972), Robert Brown (1920-2002), Mary Etta Brown (1923-?), Walter Brown (1925-?),
Emmett Brown (1928-?), Pearl Ocee Brown (1919-2010), Eliza Amyrose Brown (1929-?), and Andrew Lewis Brown
(1931-1997). Pearl Ocee Brown married Walter Lewis Vinson on the date of December 26, 1937 at Southampton
County, Virginia. Pearl and Walter Vinson had the following children: Walter L. Vinson (1939-), Eura Mary
Vinson Jewette (1941-), Pearl Eueince Vinson (1942-), Edna Lucille Vinson (1943-1986), Joe Thomas Vinson (1945-
1974), Roger Robert Vinson (1947-), Dr. Gwendolyn Vinson (1949-2007), Lois Arnell Vinson (1952-), and
Randolph Vinson (1957-). The Lowe, Vinson, Brown, and Doles families live in Virginia, North Carolina, and
some migrated into as north as New Jersey.

Elgin Madison Lowe Sr.’s college book is entitled, “A Black College at the Crossroads.” His book about his family
is entitled, “The Story of My Life for all of My Children.” The Lowe family has a strong legacy of being involved
in civil rights, education, STEM fields, humanitarianism, and other great endeavors. They should be honored, and
their family is related to my family by heritage.

The Bynum Family

I am related to the Bynum family. Many of my cousins and other relatives have the Bynum surname. This story of
African American Bynum started long ago. My second great grandfather was a man named Fenton Bynum Sr. He
was born in Southampton County, Virginia in 1885. Fenton Bynum Sr.’s parents were Alexander Bynum and
Melvina Blow. His first wife was a woman named Mary Belle Sykes (1894-1936). Both of them had many children
whose names were: Willie Bynum, Arlie B. Bynum, Fenton Albert Bynum Jr., Abbington Bynum, Alener Bynum,
Earlie Bynum, Estelle Bynum, Mary Bynum, Dorothy May Bynum, and Virginia Dare Bynum. My second great
uncle Abbington Bynum married Florence Nightingale Smith. They had the following children of: Shirley Ann
Bynum, Erlene Bynum, Falconetto Bynum (Tabatha Falconetto Garris is her daughter. Her husband is James
Garris) , Frances Ann Bynum, Abbington Bynum Jr., and Pamela Sonia Bynum (whose children are Lorenza
Terry Doles Jr. and Amy Deshaun Doles. Pamela’s husband is Lorenza Terry Doles). .

Fenton Albert Bynum Jr. was my great grandfather who lived from 1912-1979. It is said by my relatives that he
lived in Florida. Fenton Albert Bynum Jr.'s son was my grandfather Robert Bynum (whose mother was Ella Mae
Claud Bynum Turner. So, she was part of the Claud family. Thorough DNA evidence and genealogical records, I
am related to the Clauds, and I contacted many of my cousin Clauds too). Robert Bynum's daughter was my
mother, and my mother conceived me. My mother’s siblings are William Leon Bynum (who passed away in 2016),
Deborah Louise Bynum, Reginald Bynum, Melloney Ann Bynum, Maureen Lea Bynum, and Ryan Leonardo
Bynum.

Therefore, to know Southampton County Virginian history is to understand a great deal of my roots. My roots
came from rural area where men, women, and children farmed, handled chickens, came out in the well, and lived
among the woods. They saw deer, and some planted diverse crops like corn, peanuts, and other supplies used for
sale (or for usage in the household). This culture of farming is very much part of world history. It continues to
this very day.
Military Veterans in my Family
1. Paul Seaborn was my second great uncle. He lived from 1894 to 1974. His sister was my great grandmother
Hollie Ethel Seaborn (1908-1996). By the early 1900’s, he worked in the farm with his father George Seaborn and
his mother Indiana Seaborn (her maiden name was Reese). Paul was born in Southampton County, Virginia and
he was registered during the era of World War I. He passed away by February 1973 at New Brunswick, Middlesex,
New Jersey.

2. Calvin Bailey was my second great uncle. He lived from 1892 to 1954. His sister was my great grandmother Effie
Sarah Bailey Bryant (1891-1977). His father was Harry Bailey (1855-?), and his mother was Esther Brickhouse Bailey
(1862-1955). There is a military record about Calvin Bailey. It found that Calvin Bailey departed from Hoboken,
New Jersey to Europe to fight in World War One. The departure date was on October 27, 1918. The ship was
named Leviathan. Calvin Bailey was part of the military unit of the 540th Engineers and his rank in the beginning
was Private. His service number was 2609684. He was part of the Company D 540th Engineers (Service Battalion).
After World War One, he lived in the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Calvin Bailey married Carrie Fisher Bailey.

3. My 3rd great-grandfather Johnson Brickhouse. He was an African American Union soldier during the Civil War,
and he was born in 1826. His mother was Eliza Collins (1805-?), and his father was Benjamin Brickhouse II (1791-
1878). His wife was Julia Perkins. He received his Civil War pension. He fought for the 9th U.S. Colored Infantry
back in the year of 1863. According to military records, he was five feet nine inches and a half. Also, he was a
farmer by occupation, which was very common during the 19th century.

4. Harold Lucius Peeples (1929-1997) was my great uncle. He was the brother of my later grandmother Fannie
Louise Bynum (1932-2007). He was born in March 31, 1929 at Drewryville, Virginia. That is found at
Southampton County, Virginia. He was a private during the Korean War. He is buried at the Forest Lawn
Cemetery and Mausoleum in the Richmond, Virginia area. His wife was Flordy Mae Rooks. They married on the
date of September 5, 1950 at Southampton County, Virginia.

5. My second great uncle Mack Franklin Peeples (1881-1939) was another veteran of World War One. He was
buried at Shiloh Cemetery at Boykins, Virginia. His military records show that he was a private from Company E.
He was in the U.S. Army. He married Josephine Charleston.
6. My father Harry Junior Doggett was a member of the U.S. Air Force during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. He
was stationed in Germany.

7. My brother Marcus Doggett was an Iraqi War veteran. He was stationed in Virginia and Texas. He traveled the
world from Scotland to Iraq.

8. My uncle William Leon Bynum (1953-2016) was a member of the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany. He
was part of the Shiloh Baptist Church as a young person. He was active of its Youth Choir and Youth Usher
board. He graduated from Southampton County High School in 1973 where he played for the Indians Varsity
football team. He loved football and was a fan of the Washington NFL team.

9. My second cousin England Warner Doggett (1944-2006) was member of the U.S. Air Force. He was born on
October 31, 1944 at Accomack, Virginia. His father was Arthur Doggett Jr. (1919-1993), and his mother was Alma
Virginia Douglas (1926-2013). His wife was Gladys Udine Taylor. He was 61 years old when he passed away. He
lived in Washington, D.C. for a number of years. He was a retired Sergeant of the U.S. Air Force.

10. Jacqueline Marie Claude was my first cousin and she was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. My mother knew of
her a lot. She lived from August 15, 1949 to January 23, 2015. She was born in Southampton County, Virginia. She
lived in Miami, Florida for many years. She went into school to earn a teaching degree. Later, she taught students
in Wilmington, North Carolina. She taught at Lakeside, New Hanover High School, and intermittently at Cape
Fear Community College in computer technology. She also helped developed technology curriculum at the state
level and was active in NCAE. She encouraged her students to work hard and dream big. She worked out at the
YMCA. She has many friends, a great family, and she enjoyed her life. She believed in God and was a very spiritual
woman.

Migrations
There have been many migrations of my people. First, I will explain my migrations of paternal ancestors and then
my maternal ancestors. My paternal ancestors came from Halifax County, North Carolina. My paternal fourth
great-grandfather was a man named James. He married a woman named Edney. They lived during the late 1700’s
and early 1800’s. By the late 1800’s, most of my paternal ancestors lived in Palmyra, Halifax County, North
Carolina. My second great grandfather Adam in North Carolina worked as a farm laborer by the year of 1900.
Adam had two wives by the names of Georgianna Tillery and Nancy Reynolds later on. Also, some of my
ancestors on my father’s side lived in Scotland Neck, North Carolina too. By the mid-20th century, a change
occurred. Many of my paternal relatives started to migrate from North Carolina into Virginia, especially at
Northampton County, Virginia. Many of them lived in that area of the Eastern Shore where Cape Charles was
located.

My great grandfather Carl lived in the Eastern Shore until his passing at 1968. My grandfather Thurman lived in
Cape Charles, Virginia, and in Baltimore, Maryland too. By the mid-20th century, many of my paternal relatives
traveled further into Maryland, New Jersey, and Philadelphia. Descendants of my great uncle Levi, especially live
in New Jersey to this very day. These migrations occurred during the two Great Migrations of the early 20th
century and during the time of World War II. Some of my paternal relatives traveled into Trenton, New Jersey,
Connecticut, and as far as Florida. Alicia Gatling-Sweat is my paternal third cousin. She was born in the year of
1968. We share the same 2nd great grandfather named Adam. Her mother is Delores Jones and her father was the
late, great Bishop Dr. Richard Gerald Gatling Sr. (1944-2014). She was married at Hartford, Connecticut. Alicia's
ancestors traveled form North Carolina all the way into Connecticut.

My maternal ancestors originated from Southampton County, Virginia. One major discovery was more
information about my 6th great grandfather (on my mother's side) named Solomon Hurst. He lived from 1781 to
1877. He was from Southampton County, Virginia. On the Internet, what caught my eye was that Solomon was
born free. He was a freeman. Back in the day, a lot of black people were slaves. He stood up 6 feet 1, which was
remarkable since that is precisely how tall I am. Solomon Hurst married Milly Mundy on the date of April 7,
1804. Solomon's mother was Faithy Hurst, and she was born at ca. 1757. Solomon's son was Moore Hurst. Moore
Hurst had a son named Morefield Hurst Turner. Morefield Hurst Turner's daughter was Susanna Field Hurst-
Turner Claud (1862 - 1949). Susanna (her mother was Milly [Woodson] Bozeman, and she lived from 1830-1910) is
my 3rd great grandmother. Susanna married James Thompson Claud and they had the child named Arthur Boss
Claud. My mother saw Arthur Boss Claud when she was young many decades ago. I am related to many of the
Clauds in Virginia and other places of America. Arthur Boss Claud (1891-1974) had a child named Ella Mae Claud-
Turner (1913-1991) or my great-grandmother. She gave birth to my grandfather named Robert, and then I came
into the picture later on with my birth in the year of 1983. Yes, my maternal relatives are related to the Artis family,
the Scott family, the Hill family, the Darden family, the Kindred family, and other families in Southampton
County, Virginia too. By the early to mid-20th century, my maternal ancestors migrated from Southampton
County, Virginia into Franklin, Courtland, Portsmouth, Baltimore, other parts of Maryland, Philadelphia, New
York state, and as far north as Connecticut. They traveled during the two Great Migrations too. For example, my
third great aunt Addie Claud (1891-1928) lived in Portsmouth, Virginia. Susanna’s daughter Lily Claud traveled
into Philadelphia too. My maternal second cousin Abdul Rashad-Diaab is a descendant of my 2nd great uncle
Ralph Charles William Peebles (1884-1967). Abdul's father is James Russell Peeples. Abdul lives in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin, and he was born in 1947. With DNA testing and historical documents, we are blessed to live in a time
where numerous folks can trace their ancestors so far back.
Levi Doggett Sr.
Levi Doggett Sr. was a very righteous man. He lived from September 3, 1923 to December 1, 2015. He was born at
Scotland, North Carolina (at Halifax County). His parents were Carl Doggett (1886-1968) and Lizzie Trice (1885-
1950). Levi Doggett Sr. was my great uncle. Levi married Elizabeth Virginia Wynn on the date of July 24, 1946 at
Northampton County, Virginia. Levi Doggett Sr. and Elizabeth Virginia Wynn had the following children:
Charles Elmore Doggett (1946-2010), Levi Doggett Jr. (1948-present), Laverne Olivia Doggett (1948-present),
Elizabeth Virginia Doggett (1951-present), Mary Ann Doggett (1953-present), Juanita Mae Doggett (1958-present),
and Annie Marie Doggett (1963-present). Levi Doggett Sr. was part of the Mount Sinai Gospel Tabernacle under
the leadership of Bishop Estella D. Smith. He worked at Sunday School as a Superintendent. He loved to fish, ate
seafood, and used plumbing skills. He had 10 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other relatives. He lived in
Cape Charles, Virginia before his passing. Charles Elmore Doggett traveled from the Eastern Shore and lived in
Trenton, New Jersey. He married Marie Elizabeth Morris on August 28, 1965 at Cheriton, Virginia. Their children
are: Charles Doggett Jr. (1966-present), Anthony Doggett (1970-present), and Craig Doggett. My second cousin
Craig Doggett married Raquel Fripps (1971-present) and they have a daughter named Bria Raquel Doggett (1995-
present. She was born in Camden, New Jersey). Anthony Doggett married Rhonda A. Hayes-Doggett and had
the following children of: Anthony Doggett Jr. and Takiyah Doggett. Anthony Doggett has lived in Sicklerville,
NJ and Philadelphia.

Many of paternal ancestors came from the Eastern Shore in Virginia. Centuries ago, many free African Americans
lived in that part of Virginia. Eastern Shore Virginia is filled with towns and cities like Cape Charles, Eastville,
Kiptopeke, Exmore, Chincoteague, Nassawadox, Accomac, and other locations. My 4th great grandfather lived in
that land. His name was George Perkins. He was born in 1815. His wife was Esther Perkins. Their daughter was
Julia Perkins who was born in 1835. Julia Perkins married Johnson Brickhouse, and their child was Esther
Brickhouse Bailey (1862-1955). Esther Brickhouse Bailey is a very important person as she was born a slave and she
was my 2nd great grandmother.

She was born at Accomack County, Virginia. She later lived in Cape Charles, Virginia which I visited before years
ago. She married Harry Bailey and had a daughter named Effie Sarah Bailey Bryant. Effie was my great
grandmother. Many of her descendants do live in Virginia, Baltimore, Delaware, New Jersey, and other places in
America. The descendants of George Perkins are people that I have recently discovered who live all over America
too. I am related to many people who have surnames like Kelley, Upshur, Bailey, Collins, Bryant, etc.*
My relatives, who are the descendants of Susanna Field Hurst-Turner Claud, lived and
worshipped God both in Boykins and in Philadelphia.

Susanna Field Hurst-Turner Claud

This is certainly a time of revelation. For years, much of my ancestors remained a mystery to me. I knew by
inspiration of God that I would find much more information in the future than during the past. So, I waited and
did my research. Today, in 2019, I found even more facts about my ancestry than I have envisioned before. My 3rd
great grandmother was Susanna Field- Hurst-Turner Claud. She lived from March 1862 (at Jerusalem,
Southampton County, Virginia) to January 1949 at Courtland, Virginia. Her story was a long one of sacrifice,
courage, and family. She was born during the end of the American Civil War. Susanna was the descendant of the
Iroquoian Nottoway Native Americans. When I traveled into the area of the Nottoway next to my maternal
relatives’ home, my uncle told me in casual conversation that I was kin to the Nottoway people. My mother said
so and my maternal grandfather said so. Now, there is more evidence of this. Susanna’s parents were Morefield
Hurst (1827-1918) and Milly Bozeman (1830-1910). Morefield Hurst was a man who was a descendant of the
African American freeman named Solomon Hurst (1780-1877). Milly Woodson-Bozeman was a descendant of the
Nottoway people. Milly and Morefield had a great, loving marriage. They lived on Nottoway allotments where
they raised crops and had a family. Morefield Hurst’s family was farm laborers. Before the Civil War ended, Milly
Woodson Turner had the following children: Sarah Woodson (1850-?), Virginia Swcety Hurst-Turner (1852-?),
Joshua Turner (1857-?), and Cordelia Turner (1860-1934. She was also known as Ophelia, Candy, and Pus).
Morefield and Milly together (after the U.S. Civil War) had the following children: Susanna Field Hurst-Turner
Claud (1862-1949), James Turner (1868-?), Josephine T. Hurst (1868-1929), Thomas Hurst (1868-1892), George
Hurst (1871-1887), Benjamin Hurst (1874-?), and William P. Turner (1872-?). This family lived in the rural
community. They grew food and traded in goods and services. During Reconstruction, Klan terrorists harmed
many black freed people in Southampton County. In the area, the Turner Hill School was taught by the black
woman named Harriet A. Gregory, who was a daughter of a preacher. Milly Turner and Morefield Hurst sent
their children to the Turner Hill School. They family owned a farm and lived near Indian Town Road. In that
area, there were other families like Artis, Barrett, Britt, Claud, Crocker, Lewis, Stewart, Turner, Wiggins, and
Williams.
When Susanna Field Hurst-Turner Claud was 21 years old, she married James Thompson Claud (whose mother
was Sarah Claud. His biological father was E.C. Barrett. He was raised by Tom Hill, who was an African
American man) on the date of August 18, 1880 at 7 pm. James and Susanna’s first child was Nannie Claud (1880-
1947). Susanna Field Hurst-Turner and Rev. James Thompson Claud’s other children were: Mattie Claud (1882-
?), Sarah Claud (1885-1961), Addie Claud (1891-1928), Arthur Boss Claude (1891-1974), Lila (Tigue) Claud (1892-
1980), Virgie Mae Claud Hardy (1895-1968), Lilly Claud (1897-?), Alice Rosetta Claud (1902-1987. Her name was
Ett), and Joshua Claud (1908-1980). The Claud family worked in feeding hogs, working on gathering chickens,
gathering crops, and doing other farm work. They came in the Nottoway River to fish. Susanna was a friend to
his sister in law Romine Turner (she was the wife of Susanna’s brother named William P. Turner). My third
great-grandfather Rev. James Thompson Claud preached at the Shiloh Baptist Church at Boykins, Southampton
County, Virginia. Susanna’s great grandson was Alfred O. Whittaker.

By the early 20th century, the children of Rev. James Claud and Susanna Claud migrated into urban communities
like in Portsmouth, Philadelphia, and beyond. Sarah Claud or the daughter of Susanna Claud came into
Portsmouth and married William Moses Wright Sr. (1880-1937). Sarah and William had the following children:
John Wright (1905-1975), Mary Louise Wright (1909-1964), William Moses Wright Jr. (1910-1981. He was my first
cousin, and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II), and James Wright (1913-1978). John Wright
married a woman named Priscilla Wright. William Moses Wright Jr. married Lola Belle Young at the date of May
11, 1937 at Emporia, Virginia. They had a daughter named Brenda Joyce Wright (she was born on 1959). Brenda
Joyce Wright married Carl Davis Wilkins on November 26, 1977 at Portsmouth, Virginia. Brenda Joyce Wright is
my 2nd cousin. Many of Susanna’s children lived in Portsmouth and worked in that community for years.
Susanna Turner Claud lived on in Virginia until her passing in 1949. Susanna's funeral was found in
Southampton County, Virginia. People who came to the funeral were her children, grandchildren, great
grandchildren, and other community leaders. They came from Portsmouth, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.
Archaeological research and a study from Virginia scholars found artifacts of the home of Susanna. In the final
analysis, I am America literally. I am part of Africa too. My ancestors came from Africa directly, and I have total
right to live in America too.

The Younger Generation
During the 21st century in 2019, my relatives are here flourishing, making great contributions to the
world, and living life. My paternal second cousin Cecily Danielle Gary was born in 1988. She was
born in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and she has traveled the world. My paternal third cousin Jkori
Marquise Copes was born in 1985. Both Jkori and Cecily share my 2nd great grandfather Adam
Doggett. Chey Parker is my maternal 5th cousin. She is from Hampton, Virginia and is the Owner
and Founder at SNS Glamour, LLC. Chey Parker's mother is Wendy Ivette Parker. Chey Parker's
grandmother is Ivory Collins Claude (her maiden name is Claude). So, Chey is related to the Claude
family. Ivory Collins married the late great Johnnie L. Claude (he was my 3rd cousin). Jacobi Lidell
Pollard is my 5th cousin, and he was born in the year of 2000. Jacobi's mother is Monique Jonae
Claude. My maternal fifth cousins Ashley Nicole Lowe (born in 1989) and Simone Alisa Lowe
(born in 1992) are both sisters. Ashley Lowe was born in Norfolk, Virginia and went into Howard
University. Recently, Simone Lowe married Herman Parham. My paternal third cousin Ashley
Antoinette Doggett was born in 1995.
Her parents are the musician Evan Lee Doggett and Vera Janel Dorsey. Both of her parents are
military veterans. Ashley was born in Bell, Texas. Ashley Doggett lives in Nashville, Tennessee
today, and she is an artist. We share the ancestry of Adam Doggett too. Anika Lynn Doggett-Davis
was born in 1981 and is my paternal third cousin. She has a great family and lives in North
Carolina. My maternal fifth cousin is Collecia Imani Lowe and she is studying at Virginia
Commonwealth University (which is located at Richmond, Virginia). Kidijah Maryan Bynum is my
first maternal cousin and she was born in 1994. We have the same grandfather Robert Lee Bynum.
She has a child, and she is a great person. Tabatha Falconetto Garris was born in 1982 and is my
maternal 2nd cousin. We share the same 2nd great grandfather Fenton Bynum Sr. (who was born at
Southampton County, Virginia in 1885). So, the generations of my family on both sides will
continue to develop.
Epilogue
When learning about life, you will see many surprises. I was certainly surprised at how much
discoveries that I have made about my family history. From understanding more about my paternal
and maternal sides of my family, I gained a lot of insights about my inner existence. My ancestors
came from Africa from mostly the Bantu peoples of Nigeria and the Congo. They were kidnapped
by European imperialists and were oppressed via the Maafa plus slavery in America. They lived in
both Virginia and North Carolina originally. As time went onward, their descendants became
teachers, farmers, veterans, and other contributors to society. The Great Migrations caused many
of my people to travel from Virginia and North Carolina to Maryland, Philadelphia, New York
state, Florida, Connecticut, Georgia, and as far as California. Esther Brickhouse Bailey and Zilphy
Claud are some of my heroic ancestors who made great contributions in history. Also, it is
important to note that the younger generation of my relatives is still going strong. When I was
young, I heard of the surnames of Deloach, Ivey, Barnes, and other names as people I knew in the
neighborhood. Many decades later, I found out that many people from Southampton County have
those exact same surnames. With my research, I found well over 50 people in Facebook who are
my distant cousins on both sides of my families. Here is one example. Long ago was my fifth great
grandmother Zilphy Claud. One of her sons was George Washington Claud or my 5th great uncle.
He had a child named Richard Washington Claud (1874-1945). Richard had a child named Thomas
Jefferson Claud and her daughter is Elsie Beatrice Claud-Gary or my third cousin. Her children
(like Debborah Anne Gary, Joyce Laverne Gary, etc.) and grandchildren (like Jawanda Shanese
Deberry, Janelle Deberry, Shamiya Rachelle Ridley, etc.) are related to me. My great grandmother
was Ella Mae Claud. Her father was Arthur Boss Claud. His father was Rev. James Thompson
Claud (his wife was Susanna Field Hurst Turner). His mother was Sarah Claud and Sarah's mother
was Zilphy Claud. Zilphy Claud's parents were A. Blunt and F. Blunt. Therefore, life comes full
circle and as human beings, discoveries are fun to deduce. As we approach 2020, we will continue
to believe in freedom, justice, and equality. Also, we believe in the goal of black liberation too.
Regardless if we live in America, Africa, or the Caribbean, we are still black people.
