PREFACE

Some years ago the question was asked by some old acquaintances
of mine, and true lovers of the “King and Queen” of pastimes, “Why
don’t you publish a book of problems?” Since then many more posi-
tions have been added to my collection, also the circle of chess friends
has enlarged; and the world-wide interest taken in chess stratagems
at the present time renders this a fitting opportunity to present to the
admirers of Caissa a selection of problems constructed, be it under-
stood, strictly in conformity with the “laws of the game.”
The author believes that the fact of the following problems having
appeared in british and some few foreign periodicals—hence thor-
oughly tested by a great number of proficient solvers—will add to
the value of this little volume, inasmuch as the student will probably
be spared the great annoyance of attempting to solve a number of
unsound compositions.
My sincere thanks are due to all classes of chessists for many a
word of encouragement and willingness at all times to give their valu-
able assistance in endeavouring to fathom some of the mysteries of
“the chequered field.”
I have spent many hapy hours during the past thirteen years, both
in solving the problems of others and in constructng this selection. If
the latter should afford pleasure to, and receive the approbation of,
the chess problem community, my labours will have reached their
crowning point.
With those who see no charm in the “royal game” let us sympathise,
and proudly refer them to the list of experienced amd intellectual men,
who know somthing of its moral teachings, whose names grace these
pages.

NOTES TO ELECTRONIC EDITION

This edition is based on the original edition published by Wyman &

Sons, London in 1881. No major changes have been made to the text:
the only dropped part is a diagram explaining the descriptive chess
notation used.
All problems have been computer-tested for correctness: discov-
ered errors have been indicated by [*] = several solutions, and [†] = no
solutions in the stipulation, and further details, in brackets, are given
in the solution.
Solutions have been converted to short algebraic notation, using
‘S’ to indicate knights.

101. Return the white Rook from g5 to g8, and place a black Pawn
on g8. Then play h×g5 en passant, discovering checkmate.
Note: Messrs. J. H. Blackburn and W. N. Potter have ana-
lysed this problem and testify that Black’s last move must have
been g7-g5, Black having lost all other men previously.
