RESEARCH PROPOSAL
Proposed research title:
Indication of Asthma in Managing the 2nd Stage of Labor among Women of Barangay Basud
Polangui, Albay
Background of the Study
Asthma is one of the most common condition that causes complications during
pregnancy and its prevalence is increasing in the community. It can be potentially serious if
uncontrolled and may cause complication during the second stage of labor of pregnant women.
On the second stage of labor a pregnant woman will experience longer and stronger
contractions, increased pressure in your bottom, the desire or urge to push, shaky cramps and
stretching and burning feelings in their vagina. Second stage labor may cause stress and panic
to the mother and may also trigger asthma attack.
In an article by Mayo Clinic 2016, they have state that if asthma is well controlled
during the whole course of pregnancy complications may not occur during the labor ad
delivery of the baby. They have also stated that during pregnancy asthma may worsen,
improved of remain unchanged. The severity of the asthma somehow varies depending on the
management of the mother pre-pregnancy. Thus, worsen asthma during pregnancy may result
to preeclampsia, restricted fetal growth, premature birth and the need for C-section.
Asthma may affect the progress of labor of a pregnant woman. Asthmatic patients
had a higher incidence of low-birth weight (less than 2500 g) babies, which is mainly found in
those not requiring bronchodilator therapy (T T Lao et al.) The objective of this study to
determine the indication of asthma during second stage of labor among women of Brgy. Basud
Polangui, Albay. This will help the pregnant woman with asthma to understand and manage
their condition during their second stage of labor.
Statement of the Problem
The study will aim to determine the indication of asthma during the second stage of
labor. The study will be sought to answer the following questions:
1. What do mothers with asthma of Barangay Basud Polangui, Albay experience
during labor?
2. How asthma during pregnancy affects the delivery of the baby?

Scope and Delimitation

The scope of the study generally focuses on the indication of asthma to the second
stage of labor during delivery of a pregnant mother. The researchers selected pregnant mothers
from Barangay Bausd Polangui, Albay. Respondents of this study would only circulate in the
second stage of labor of the mother.
Significance of the Study
Pregnant Mothers with Asthma. This study will help the pregnant women
understand more their condition and be able to manage asthma during pregnancy and
labor.
Health Allied Professional. This study will help the Health Allied Professionals in
attending and managing the pregnant mothers with asthma during second stage of
labor.
Future Researchers. This study can be used as a basis for valuable information that
will guide the future researchers in their related study and may supply
recommendations
Research Methodology
This study will utilize the survey method of research to arrive with reliable and valid
data to determine the indication of asthma during the second stage of labor of pregnant women
of Barangay Basud Polangui, Albay. This will be done through the use of survey questions
and interviews to come up with the data that will be used in the study.
Furthermore, the researchers also conducted a face-to-face method which will be
done through an interview with the pregnant mothers with asthma. In order to obtain the
needed data and information that will be provided in the present study.
