On Saturday, September 28th, I visited the Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery at UMBC.

Another IR 1 student accompanied me on this visit. I chose this library because of its wealth of

various information which will help me in solidifying a topic and learning more about

psychiatric diseases. I used the library’s catalog books with the keywords “schizophrenia”

and“psychosis” to find books with titles that interested me. I also searched for books

recommended by SARDAA, an organization that I emailed. Through this method, I found 5

books, however, only two were comprehensible. I checked out “Group CBT for Psychosis” by

Tania Lecomte and “Psychotherapy of the Borderline Adult” by James F. Masterson. The first

book is a guidebook for clinicians, giving insightful information on group cognitive-behavioral

therapy, an interpersonal approach to treating those suffering from various psychotic disorders.

The second book focused on supportive psychotherapy and reconstructive psychotherapy, both

helping young adults and teens rebuild a sense of self. I really liked the variety of resources

found in this library, comparative to the Howard county library where I won’t be able to find the

same amount or quality of books. Also, despite the mass amount of books, everything was easy

to locate, with entire sections dedicated to each topic. Through this experience, I’ve discovered

that the medical aspect of schizophrenia itself is very boring, however, the therapy aspect

interests me more. Unrelated to my topic, seeing college students at work was inspiring, as they

all used their time effectively and focused on working while they were at the library. This

encourages me to focus my time better and effectively separate work and play. I would definitely
visit this library again once I have a more solidified topic so that I can find a wealth of focused

information.

On Sunday, October 27th, I visited the Albin O. Kuhn Library and Gallery at UMBC. I

went by myself. I chose this library because of its wealth of various information which will help

me find new information about my topic. I used the library’s catalog books with the keywords
“therapy”, “cbt” and“psychosis” to find resources that are relevant to my topic. I mostly focused

on finding online resources such as ebooks,

audio, and database information I checked out

“Treating Psychosis : A Clinician's Guide to

Integrating Acceptance and Commitment

Therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy, and

Mindfulness Approaches Within the Cognitive

Behavioral Therapy Tradition” by Andrew

Jacobs and others. This is an ebook comparing

Cognitive behavioral therapy, Acceptance

commitment therapy, and compassion focused

therapy for use in treating patients with psychosis. I really liked the variety of resources found in

this library, as it contains high quality information on many topics. Also, the catalog was very

easy to navigate, allowing me to use my time quite effectively. Through this experience, I’ve

discovered that I would like to learn more about other methods of therapy other than CBT. I

would also like to use some of their databases to further my research. I would definitely utilize

this library’s resources again in order to find more focused information.
