1. A pre-cast concrete T-beam section has a flange width of 600 mm,
flange thickness of 100 mm, web width of 350 mm, effective depth
of 580 mm and a total depth of 650 mm, Use 𝑓𝑐′ =21 MPa and
𝑓𝑦 =415 MPa. The section is reinforced with 5 - 28 mm ∅ bars in
tension.
a) Compute for the depth of the compression block.
b) Compute for the strain in the tension steel.
c) Calculate the design flexural strength of the section.
d) Determine the total factored uniform load that the beam could
safely support if the beam is 8 m.
2. Given:
slab thickness, t = 100 mm
Materials:
effective depth, d = 550 mm
𝑓𝑐′ = 218 MPa
web width, 𝑏𝑤 = 300 mm
beam spacing = 2 m on centers 𝑓𝑦 = 400 Mpa
simple span, L = 4.8 m
The slab is casted monolithically with the beam. Determine the following:
a) The effective width of the flange (mm)
b) The number of 32 mm ∅ bars required for the beam to resist a design
moment of 600 kN-m.
