My experience before and after visiting the Liberation war

museum

The word “Liberation War” bears the most significance in the life of the whole Bengali nation. It is the
result of the immense bloodshed of 9 months, sacrificing more than 3 million life, and after all of these
we were able to talk in our own mother language that we are relishing today.
During the liberation war we didn’t even born. So far, the more or less we know about the great
“Liberation War” is from our grand-parents or our own parents or from the relatives who directly or
indirectly were involved in the war. But that was never satisfying before I visited the “museum”. There
was always a gap between the incidents. The stories of the war, how the people were treated at the
Pakistan period, how the people of East Bengal were tortured economically, politically and lastly
physically, how they survived that hard time, how they all came together to fight for their mother tongue
and how they won the marvelous victory and a rebirth of a new nation named “Bangladesh” take her
place in the world. These were some of the questions that kept rotating in my head until I visited the
“Liberation War museum”.
The “Liberation war museum” is a museum that brings Bangladesh’s history to life. Long after
Bangladesh appeared through a nine-month bloodbath, a war museum took upon it to come to pass the
less-known national history of pride to the whole generation who did not get an opportunity to encounter
firsthand Bangladesh's War of Liberation battled in 1971. After visiting the war museum my knowing’s
about the liberation war has enlarged and it was a prideful journey to the museum that I’m going discuss
in short down here:
The liberation war museum has been relocated to the city's Agargaon area from Segunbagicha, remaining
with all its dignity and peacefulness, keeping its door wide open for visitors to encounter Bangladesh's
culture, legacy and history, 1971's freedom war as well as of recent hundreds of years in our part of the
world. While having a walk through the Passageways of the glorious four gallery of this museum, one can
return to the pages of history, experience the agony, vulnerability, sufferings, sacrifices of the
incomparable Liberation War and taste the birth of another nation called - Bangladesh.
Staring from the gallery one- the journey starts with the ancient history of Bengal, from the time of Ibne
Batuta in 13th century to the 200-year rule of British empire along with exploring the magnificence of
newly founded capital of Mughal Empire "Dacca" and the Battle of Plassey's tragic ending. With the
historical March 7 speech of Bangabandhu and the "Operation Search Light" - the beginning of the worst
genocide of twentieth century incurred upon unarmed Bengalis by the Pakistanis and subsequent
declaration of independence by Bangabandhu. The museum creates an ambience - a dark passage,
military jeep with its headlights on, burnt walls, broken bricks and rows of dead bodies – it was bound to
feel the revisiting of the horrific night of March 25. The photographs of helpless millions who leave
their country behind losing everything and take refuge in India. The stories of our freedom
fighters as well as the cooperation and the support we got from the international communities.
The representation of the torture cell along with wall graffiti and photographs portray the cruelty
of the Pakistani junta on the captivated women in their camps. The moment of signing of the
instrument of surrender by Lt Gen Niazi, the commander of Pakistan Eastern Command, in Dhaka on
December 16, 1971, in the presence of India's Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora the gallery ends with the 4 th
one, the giant display of the first constitution of the newly born country Bangladesh.

Experience:
“The museum taught me about many historical facts of Bangladesh. For us, Japanese, Bangladesh isn’t
that much familiar country and most us only knew a few things about Bangladesh. However, through
today’s experience, I’m strongly feeling that more people should know about what Bangladeshi people
had gone through and what they have sacrificed to get their freedom to talk in their mother language.
They have gone through heartbroken situations, the sacrifices of the freedom fighters, the losses
Bangladesh has experienced that should be known by all. The brutality of 25 th march must be recognized
internationally and the world should know that what the Bangladeshi people had done for their mother
tongue. Finally, I hope all of the incidents that took place in this country during their liberation war
should be well known to all and may Bangladesh prosper in future”

“I’m Khadija Begum, assistant teacher of Madan-Ganj govt. primary school, Bandar, Narayanganj. It was
my long desire to visit the “Liberation war museum” and finally I have come with my son today. I’m
overwhelmed to see my “shonar Bangladesh’s” history, culture, all in one place that gives me a tear of
joy. This is such a wonderful place that any one of today’s generation who doesn’t know about the
liberation war and how Bangladesh has become the Bangladesh today can come here to know. My heart
filled up with tears while visiting the galleries, how immensely our people were tortured, how hard it was
for them to give us this beautiful day. We could have been the slave of Pakistan’s if our honorable
freedom fighters wouldn’t have done it for us. The sacrifices they have done for us can never be
forgotten.”

Eye witness interview 1

Name: Ratan Kumar Saha

Gender: Male
Age: 65
Age on 1971: 17
Occupation: Retired service holder
Place: Tangail
1. What was your age during the time of the liberation war?
I was 17 a student of B.com 1st year during liberation war.
2. Did you witness the speech of 7th march 1971?
We listened Bangabandhu’s historic speech of 7th March live on Radio.
3. Were you involved with politics at that time?
We were closely involved in student politics which was against of west Pakistan’s rulers. After that
historical speech, people were getting prepared for war. Banga Bir Qadir Siddique was my classmate. He
left Karachi and came to Dhaka and started his study with us.
4. Where you were at 25th march? Did you witness something on 25th march?
I was at Tangail. Military didn’t move at Tangail at 25 March. But it was a black night for us as we heard
the genocide happed at Dhaka and we at that time got assured that something very dangerous is coming.
5. When did the Pakistani military entered in you are?
Pakistani armed force entered in my area (Tangail) on 4 th April. Qadir bahini resisted them by mortar
shell. After that military force did not proceed to the front because four zeep were blasted by Qadir
bahini. We were not actually prepared and it was uncertain for me. I was worried about my sister-in-law. I
took her with me and decided to take her on her father’s place. But I couldn’t take her. Before that the
military has arrived and we had to flee from home to another remote place at sokhipur Tangail. The whole
day was on gunfire. And we heard the sound of firing.
6. Did you directly face with any military or military action?
I didn’t have to face any military ever.
7. What happened in your area after you and your family flee to another place?
After that day we came home and saw that my cousin got shot on that firing. He was senseless. He was
taken to hospital on that night. We whole family took shelter in another safe place and we kept on
moving.
8. If you were directly involved in the war?
Qadir Siddique made a liberation force for our area. I was on that force. Though I was not a freedom
fighter but I was involved with that force till mid of July. When I came to meet with my mother after
midnight that and someone or maybe a rajakar had this information and the military forced had the news,
four military zeep came on that day in search of me and asked one of my teachers to show them my
house. They couldn’t find me as I was hiding at the store room. Then they decided to fire the whole house
and left the place. I came out only with my under wear and many parts of my body was burnt by that
time. After some moment when I came out and walked through the road, they called me and asked one of
my teachers who was in custody of them at that time that if I’m Ratan or not? But my teacher said “he’s
not rattan, he is a mad guy” and they couldn’t recognize me and suddenly became senseless.
9. What happened after that?
I came to know that some war criminal was helping the Pakistani armed force. My family stopped me to
join again Qadir bahini after that incident. Then with some young boy I went to India by boat. We
reached at Assam. Some of my relative sent me some money by money order. I went to Kolkata at my
uncle’s place. From then I was there till Independence. We kept all news of Bangladesh by radio. We
heard the news of surrender of Pakistani army by wireless because that time there was no system of live
telecast on tv. After war Bangladesh was totally destructed. When the Army was going back, they fired
some people on my area. Overall approximately 30 lakh people died during the war.

Eye witness interview 2

Name: ATM Ahmed Hossain

Age: 65
Age at 1971: 17
Occupation: Director food and beverage at Dhaka Regency
Place: Shreepur, Magura
1. What’s your name and age during the time of liberation war?
My name is ATM Ahmed Hossain. In the year 1971 I was 17. I was in first year of college. My
hometown is Magura, Sreepur.
2. Did you listen to the speech of 7th march by Bangabandhu?
I listened the historic speech of Bangabandhu on radio. In my point of view, I think that mainly it was the
speech of independence. I was directly involved in Bangladesh student league. I always took part in
procession for mass rising in 1969 in my area. Although I was not in any higher position of student
league, But I was always in front line of procession.
3. What do you know about the 25th march?
25 march’s genocide was occurred mainly on Dhaka. At that time, I was on my native village. But we
were aware about this incident and something like this is going to be happened although my area was
restrained from that incident.
4. What was the situation at your place during the liberation war?
After 25th march the liberation war was actually started. Some people of my area left their job and started
training as freedom fighter and the force was named Akbar Bahini. First of all, military force killed 3
Hindus in my area and fired their shops and stationaries. And the military force always caught young
people and kill them or made them war criminal. Whenever Pakistani military came our village, me and
my family ran away from our village to another place. My family didn’t give me permission to join as
freedom fighter. But I decided to go to India for training. We 30 people started for India. On the way we
heard that Pakistani military are coming on this highway. We hide ourselves on jute field. We used to
cross that highway on two to two. But me and a person named Ator Ali, we couldn’t cross the road. We
became team out. Then we started involved on Akbar bahini indirectly. I used to help them.
5. Is there any specific situation of that time you remember?
One of my batch mates named Zahirul Alam Mukul was directly involved in freedom fighting. That time
we were in shelter in a relative’s house. Somehow a person rushed into that house and he was impaled by
bullet. He told us Mukul was dead on a fighting against military and war criminals.
Another heart tearing situation was, there was a mad monk a man in our village, one day I was at the bank
of the pond of “shoshan ghat” and suddenly saw a dead body by the side of the river and it was the body
of that mad monk, what he had done to them? What was his fault? The military force didn’t even spare a
man who was mentally ill which was so pathetic for us.
6. Did you face anything on 14th December 1971?
My Magura became independent on 14th December. We all were cheerful. On that day military camp was
destroyed by bombing from freedom fighters.
I saw many people going to India and crying while left the country by Jessore Road. They were not going
willingly. They all were proletariat that time.
7. How was the involvement of rajakar at your place back then?
Rajakars has always informed the military force that member of our family was involved as freedom
fighter. So, whenever they came to our home we ran away. They used to catch our hens and ducks and
cooked them.
8. As magura got independence at 14th December, did you notice any odd situation after that
period?
15 December a military man was caught by local people of my area. They decided to kill him. But
somehow, they feel pity on him and sent him to Dhaka. And after that we still celebrate 14 th December as
“Magura mukti dibosh” every year.

Liberation War Museum Visit experience

I am Tanjila Akther, ID: 163940030. For our His-103 group project me and my group members visited
the Liberation war museum on 8th April, 2019. Liberation war museum is located in Agargaon, Civic
Sector, Dhaka 1207. The entry Ticket price is 20tk. This museum is well decorated and beautiful. This
was a very nice experience for me after visiting this Liberation war Museum. All my childhood memory’s
I hear from people and my educational learning from book about our Bangladeshi liberation war on 1971
also related to this museum. After visiting this museum now, I can easily find the actual imagination of
our past history. Before this it was actually quite difficult for me to guess what was actually happened in
1971. The area location is not too much good, after a long journey we reached there in a rainy day but
after visiting the museum I find the place more interesting. This museum is made on the history of
Bangladesh, especially on the liberation war with Pakistan. This museum has different section on history
base. In the first section of a big gallery is coverage of the early history of Bangladesh and Indian
independent movement against British Raj in Bengal. Here I saw so many pictures, statues and handmade
clothing and instruments which indicate the entire history of our past culture. A major section is decorated
by language movement which is regarded as the beginning of the movement for Bangladesh’s
independence. Several galleries highlight the building sectional conflict between West Pakistan and
Bangladesh (then East Pakistan), the rise of Bengali nationalist leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the
events of 1971. After this section the lighting and decoration of the museum is too good. The coverage of
the liberation war includes the training and operations of the Mukti Bahini, the guerrilla army built by the
Awami League to resist Pakistani forces. Several galleries focus on the genocide carried out by the
Pakistani army against the Bengali population, with Operation Searchlight targeting Bengali intellectuals,
students, Hindus and Awami League leaders, and the humanitarian crisis created with the pouring of an
estimated ten million refugees into neighboring country India. The other part of the museum is the
coverage of the war continues to India's support for the Mukti Bahini and its subsequent direct
intervention with the outbreak of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which led to the surrender of all
Pakistani forces in Bangladesh on 16 December 1971. All of the history is clearly well decorated in there.
The using things like gun, dress, car, using instruments, some pictures of that timing are in the museum.
All of the things are decorated in there step by step. So that the visitors can understand the actual history
of past a can feel very deeply. From there I learned too many new things. In the museum here is a big
book shop. Visitors can buy their favorite book from there. At the end I want to say that only a museum
can’t full fill all the history of past but it can give some important information with some real experience
which is benefited for us. After visiting the full museum, me and my group members collect some
interview from the museum visitor people. It was also a good experience for me. From there I learned
many things about their different point of view about our liberation war. After ending this part of group
project, I also collect some data from eye witness MD. Abdul Halim & MD. Hossain Babul about
liberation war. Overall it was a good experience though it was little bit difficult work

Liberation war museum experience

I am Sumya Hosaain,Id:1631314030 .For the history group project, me and my group mates Tanjila Akter
and Shourov Roy went to visit the liberation war museum on 8th April. It was too tough to reach the
destination but at last we reached there. The liberation War Museum, which has been located at first
Segun Bagicha then it has been relocated to the Agargaon in April, 2017.At first, we collected our tickets
from their ticket counter. Which cost was 20 tk. Then we entered the inside of the liberation War
Museum. The museum was beautifully well decorated. Everything was on point. They decorate the
ingredients of history so nicely. Really it was my first time experience and that time I really felt proud
being the citizen of Bangladesh .Though I have never seen the War but whatever I heard and whatever I
saw there were similarities and also dissimilarities .There are four types of gallery .Though I have
typhoid but I tried my best to realize the value of liberation war museum .At first we visited the gallery 1
which I came to know the background history of Bengal .I saw the terracotta art from that period .Then I
saw that period of rulers rules which was shortly described .A major part is well organized by language
movement. When we went there except us, there were school students, others visitor. All actually come to
know the history of 200 years rule of British empire. Not only we were capable to know there British
empire but also, we were capable to know about Surya Sen, Khudiram Bose etc. There were so many
photographs then newspapers and headlines which actually helped us to know that Pakistani government.
Then we went to gallery 2 and we found their special march and special the date of 7th march it is
remembered for Bangabandhu’s speech. then we saw their operation search light. We saw a military jeep
broken bricks and so many dead bodies and burnt things which reminded us to 25th March. Then we saw
the video from projector of declaration of Bangabandhu’s speech. Easily if you visit the four galleries
your respect will come for martyrs. I saw many freedom fighters came with their family or their grandson.
And we also saw who never fight that period but saw their own eyes they also came in the museum. we
saw many pictures of that time which was really pathetic. But overall my experience of liberation war
museum was quite good. I came to know so many things from here.
Museum Visitors Interview

Visitor:1

When we visited the museum, we talked some visitors of different ages. We actually wanted to know
why they came there and for what? Because it’s a liberation war museum. We know more and less
about the liberation war. So, a gentleman which name was Jabbar Siddiqui’s age was around 70 or 71. I
asked him some questions. My questions were like why he came here? He replied me he saw the
liberation war so when he came to know this place visitors can know and will find the similarities of
liberation war .Then he more said actually there are so similarities in this museum He saw the riffles the
jeep car of Pak Hanadar Bahini. The pictures of miserable people .He said that period of 1971 military
tortured their village .Though he and his family was safe. But one of his relative died by Militaries. He
also said in that time they suffered for food. There was no food. In front of his eyes many children died
by starving of food. Their parents had nothing to do. Even me that time also suffered a lot for food. The
militaries attacked their whole village. That time he was in Jamalpur district. The militaries attacked his
mother’s and sisters. And after saying this he became emotional. So many people died in that time. And
still many of them are alive. And he said he is the lucky person one of them. He said he often comes here
with his grandson. He said how much he visits this place its reminded that period of 1971.

Museum Visitors Interview

Visitor:2

I went to another visitors who was child of freedom fighters. He said he knew about the liberation war
from his father. His father was a freedom fighter. Who died few months ago. This was his 5th time visit
of liberation war museum. He used to come with his father here.but he was no more there. That time he
came his nephew and niece. He said his father said exactly same.9 months of liberation war many martyrs
died. The Pak Hanadar Bahini attacked the general people to educate people. He said his father was the
freedom fighter and he was in sector 11. The situation of that time was so critical his father’s family went
to India because The Pak Hanadar Bahini burnt their house. They became shelter less. Then their whole
family went the India except his Grandfather and grandmother. He said when he visited the museum, he
found peace he regretted why he didn’t bear that liberation war time? If he died that time, he would be a
happy person. He said the managing department should be more careful about the inside of the
environment of the museum. Some students came but they made a mock to see the “Birangona” s photo.
They took the photo immorally. They actually didn’t come here to realize the value of Liberation war.
They came here to make fun of it. He got emotional. Authority should notice the thing very carefully.
