The agrochemical industry today finds itself in a period of unprecedented global change. The increasing
demand for food from a growing population, shifting dietary preferences, and the use of agricultural

The primary aim of the formulator is to optimise the biological activity of the pesticide and minimise the
dose required. Adjuvant science has been one of the safest and most effective routes to achieving this.
Croda offers its customers specialist knowledge on many aspects of adjuvant technology, and operates
an ongoing R&D programme for enhancing product performance in many formulation types.
More complex formulations
Trends indicate that more ‘combo’ formulations, that is formulations containing two, three or even four
active ingredients, will enter the market offering a broader protective spectrum. Croda's specialist
polymeric surfactants are often the best solution to successfully producing such complex, multiple
a.i. formulations. The resulting novel systems can give products a competitive advantage and extend
the life-cycle of actives. Late 2009 saw the launch of Atlox™ 4915, Croda’s new electrolyte-tolerant
dispersant and adjuvant. This novel ingredient is set to revolutionise glyphosate-based Suspension
Concentrate (SC) formulations where manufacturers have previously struggled to achieve stable
herbicide combinations.
Safer formulations
Many governments and consumer groups are demanding improved pesticides that are safer for the
user, end consumer, and the environment. VOC restrictions have resulted in a move away from solvent-
based Emulsion Concentrates to Micro Emulsions, Concentrated Emulsions, Suspension Concentrates
and Oil Flowables. Croda offers excellent technologies for all these alternative formulation types that
are not only safer but also more cost-effective, due to partial or complete replacement of the solvent
component.

These are Croda’s ‘Power Products’ - so-called because of their outstanding performance
in recommended applications. The star award is designed to help you make more informed
choices when selecting functional products for your formulations. Make sure you request a
sample for your own evaluations.
Tradename Consolidation
Following the acquisition of Uniqema in 2006, Croda has looked to review the way products are named.
The aim is to eliminate duplicate trade names for the same product and create a clear and consistent way of
naming products. Customers will benefit from our changes to product names as, in the future, our product
range will be based on logical chemical and functional categories and will thus be easier to understand.
REACH
Croda has pre-registered all products for supply by Croda into Europe and intends to register in line with the
relevant phase-in deadlines. This includes any monomers or starting substances in our imported polymeric
materials. We will be covering the generic exposure scenarios developed by ECPA in our registration dossiers.
(Pre) Registration by Croda of products manufactured outside the EU by Croda for importation into the EU by
Croda does not cover customer obligations for REACH registration. Where Croda substances are imported,
either alone or as part of a formulation or preparation by a third party, separate REACH registrations may be
necessary by the importer.
REACH obligations are only imposed on businesses in the EU. The obligations EU businesses have to comply
with will depend on the ‘roles’ that they play in the supply chain. It is important for you to understand the
different roles and determine if they apply to you or your EU customers.

EPA status
The Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) requires all inert ingredients used in pesticide products
applied to food sites to have an applicable tolerance/tolerance exemption in the Code of Federal Regulations
under 40 CFR 180. These tolerance/tolerance exemptions often contain limitations on how the inert
ingredient can be used in food-use pesticide products. It is important to keep this in mind when selecting an
inert ingredient for use in a pesticide formulation.
40 CFR 180 organizes inert ingredients into sections by general limitation as follows:
§180.910 Inert ingredients used pre and post-harvest; exemptions from the requirement of a tolerance
§180.920 Inert ingredients used pre-harvest; exemptions from the requirement of a tolerance
§180.930 Inert ingredients when applied to animals; exemptions from the requirement of a tolerance
