Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

In both baccalaureate and master’s degrees, students

undergo scholarly research projects. These researches follow a
series of steps and a rigid standard protocol. The undergradu-
ate and master’s theses must be systematic and must undergo
planning. Its contents must be written with a critical eye and
just like ay formal paper, research is the key to create strong
thesis.
This manual was designed to assist the nursing re-
searchers in thinking through the many aspects of crafting,
implementing and defending a research study. It also includes
a list of rules and guidelines for students to follow in thesis
writing.

tion which should be macro to micro analysis or vice ver-
sa; that is considering statistical data on global, national
and local scenarios pertaining to the study based from au-
thoritative sources. This part discusses the what and why
and significance of the study.
Set-off quotations shall not use quotation marks; single
spaced; with 10 space margins from left margin and 5
space margins from the right margin.
B. Framework of the Study. The study should be linked with
existing theories particularly nursing theories like Environ-
mental theory of Nightingale, Orem’s Self-Care Theory, etc.
which will serve as the guide of the study. This part should
also present specific constructs and assumptions that sup-
ports the study. Moreover, it should present the research
paradigm that will serve as a guide in the conduct of the
study. The research paradigm should illustrate the rela-
tionship of the variables that are used and this may be in
the form of input-process-output (IPO), flow chart system,
true system approach and many more.
C. Statement of the Problem/Statement of Objectives. The
general problem should present a situation or phenomenon
that challenges a solution or a felt need which will also
contribute to existing knowledge. The specific problems
should be presented in a logical way from factual to analyt-
ical and should be expressed in interrogative form. State-
ment of objectives both general and specific shall be stated
in declarative sentence.
D. Time and Place of the Study. Researchers should present
the period of which the research was done as well as the
locale of the study.
E. Definition of Terms. The important terms used in the
study should be defined in combination of lexical and oper-
ational way. The terms which are defined must be ar-
ranged alphabetically and proper citation of lexical defini-
tion is necessary. Format for the Definition of Terms: The
term should be Indented; italicized; followed by a period
then definition.

and Design Phase, 3.) Empirical Phase,4.) Analytic Phase and
5.) Dissemination & Utilization Phase/
Researchers should also take into consideration the ethical
conduct of research specially the principles of beneficence, re-
spect for human dignity (right to self-determination and full
disclosure) and justice (right to fair treatment and privacy).
The researcher is obliged to inform the potential subject of
all of the usual elements of consent (e.g., disclosure of the pur-
pose of the study, obligations of the participant, and voluntary
nature of participation) in a cover letter or in some other iden-
tified fashion, even when a written signed consent is not re-
quired. In addition, the disclaimer statement "Completion of
this questionnaire serves as consent to participate in the
study" should be included on questionnaires.
In some studies, the nature of the study requires incom-
plete disclosure of information about the study when informed
consent is obtained. After the study is completed, the subjects
must be debriefed and provided with complete disclosure of
information about the study that was omitted during the con-
sent process.
In addition, researchers who intend to use animals in a
study should also take the necessary steps to secure an ani-
mal permit from the Department of Agriculture and should im-
plement the ethical principles of animal use and care.
Researchers should avoid scientific misconduct which in-
volves with the conducting, reporting and publication of
fraudulent research.. Examples of which are fabrication or
falsification, selective retaining and manipulation of data, irre-
sponsible collaboration and plagiarism. University and insti-
tute policies shall be implemented once scientific misconduct
is determined by respective authorities.

On-going and Completed Faculty R & D Projects (During Im-

plementation)
DMMMSU employ five mechanisms for monitoring pro-
gress of ongoing and completed projects: a) field evaluation; b)
agency in-house review (AIHR); c) commodity R & D review
(CRDR); d) regional symposium on R & D highlights (RSRDH)/
Zonal Commodity R and D Program (ZCRDPR); and e) national
symposium on regional agriculture and resources R & D high-
lights (NSARRD).
These mechanisms, while having their own specific objec-
tives, are generally aimed at:
1. monitoring the status of projects to ensure that progress
and outputs are in accordance with the plans;
2. monitoring project resources to determine if these are being
used efficiently and are available at the right time and in
the required amounts;
3. promoting coordination among participating agencies by
disseminating information on the scope, schedule, budgets,
and other aspects of ongoing projects;
4. providing necessary feedback on project control so that
prompt corrective measures can be instituted;
5. providing feedback necessary in planning and evaluating
projects; and
6. evaluating completed projects to identify status of technolo-
gies generated or verified.

herence to the approved program of activities and budget alloca-
tion. It helps to identify problems met during project implemen-
tation, and recommend specific course of action like continua-
tion, extension modification and planned activities and method-
ology, suspension, termination, etc. in accordance with the rec-
ommendation of the technical review panel consisting of the Uni-
versity pool of experts.
The researcher shall prepare the NARRDS Form 1a (Basic
Information) and Form b (Technical Description) of the on-going
and completed researches giving emphasis on the complete parts
of a technical report indicating the Introduction, Materials and
Methods Results and Discussion, Literature Cited and Problems
Met.

Report Requirements
The researcher shall submit five copies of the following
technical reports to research unit of the operating unit and the
UREO:

G6PD is the most prevalent illness in children tested in Newborn

Screening that can lead to life-threatening hemolytic crisis and can have
immense impact to mothers. This paper aimed to explore the lived experi-
ences of mothers with G6PD-diagnosed children. The study is a phenome-
nological design using in-depth interview which was conducted from No-
vember,2013-September,2014. Participants were mothers residing in
Agoo, La Union with G6PD-toddlers who were chosen purposively. Co-
laizzi’s method was used to analyze data.

The mothers perceived that G6PD is caused by lack of enzymes and

hereditary aggravated by certain foods, drugs, and chemicals. They felt
fear, anxiety, shock, guilt and hurt initially. Later, they accepted G6PD
wholeheartedly as a part of God’s plan, after determining their children’s
positive future and with their trust to health care providers. The mothers
sought for professional and God’s help and focused on rearing their chil-
dren in order to cope with their situation.

ICHAMS LOYALTY SONG

Music: Prof. Juanito G. Selga

Lyrics: Prof Lourdes R. Selga

Above the din our voices rise

With dignity, with joy and pride
We shout your name with strength and might
ICHAMS for you, we pledge to fight
The light of health you spread to all
From lowly huts to famous halls
Let people know you care and toil
ICHAMS we hear your noble call.

The task ahead is brave and bold

You need to serve both young and old
From near and far or rich and poor
ICHAMS your name is cast in gold
The days are full of radiant hopes
Of gleaming stars and fearless goals
Move on ICHAMS we march with you
The Lord is there to guide us through.
