1) Discuss the ways in which BIM can facilitate structural analysis?

SOLUTION1
Bim stands for building information modelling, it basically facilitate to interconnect
physical and analytical data from a structural analysis software and BIM itself , so that to
evaluate the various loading and other conditions for structural and geometrical analysis and
to produce a satisfying design as well

HOW BIM FACILITATE STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

The basic mechanism behind the BIM to facilitate structural analysis of a member is
similar to Revit or any other structural analysis software,

this is an integrated software which have ability to work upon various loading, boundary,
geometrical and physical conditions which ever to be implied on the structure while its study

Ways in which BIM can facilitate structural analysis are:-

1) The process of preparing a project for structural analysis becomes more efficient, as all
data can be directly transferred from a digital model to structural analysis software.

2) It reduces the need to make extensive checks and assists in error-tracking in structural
construction documentation, reducing duplication.

3) Design results stored in a digital model become easily available for structural detailing
processes.

4) BIM let structural engineers design, visualizes, simulate, analyse document, and build
projects more efficiently and competitively (AUTODESK 2020)

5) Steel and precast concrete elements can be easily coordinated with this software.

6) BIM for structural engineer are productivity coordination and consistency of data and
improved visualization and simulation of problems and situations

7) It provides good project insight, enhances understanding and facilitates problem-solving

and idea-creation processes.

8) Structures that are heavily dependent on scheduling and offsite prefabrication processes
benefit widely from this software

Procedure for analysis
STEP1
Draft the design of the structure as it is designed or meant to be constructed

STEP2
Specify all the necessary details of the physical structure like name of structure, example-
column no. beams, slab etc, specify all the geometrical dimensions as well with higher
accuracy in order to avoid errors, draft specifications of reinforcements, materialistic
properties of the members used in the building

STEP3
Apply all the loading which may be applied too the structure

1) Gravity loading (self-weight)

2) Seismic load

3) Dynamic load

4) Material properties

5) Strength of material, boundary condition and other properties should be applied to the
structure at this stage

STEP4
Configure the loads we applied to the structure so that they may take place and act
accordingly

STEP5
Check stability of the structure for the various conditions acting on the structure we designed

STEP6
check if above result is ok or not , if it shows stable conditions then our structure is safe ,
otherwise redesign it by taking changes to various materials or shape size etc. of the material
used or

Redesign the structure again with better conditions in order to reduce the effect of major
disturbing load

3|Page
STEP7
Apply all the above steps from step 1 only up to step 6 for the new material or new design

and recheck for the stability of the structure

STEP8
Finally provide this structure design to the contractor if it is safe for the construction
procedure

2) Compare question (1) using other design software such as Esteem?

SOLUTION 2
Comparison of other software like Esteem and BIM
BIM is advantageous over many design software due to its various inbuilt features which may
be utilized in one software only, like detailing, designing and producing the design copy in
single software with complete analysis

Comparison of other software like Esteem and BIM

BIM

1) Widely used to integrate & analyse the issue related to environmental, structural etc.

2) Mostly used by architecture, Engineering sector & construction sector.

3) It offers plenty of opportunities to detect possible causes.

4) Planning, Designing, Constructing & Managing can be done easily.

Esteem

1) widely used for designing reinforced concrete building.

2) Mostly used by structural Engineers.

3) It offers some less opportunity as compare to BIM to detect causes.

4) Analysing & Designing can be done easily.

Other features of BIM Over other are

3D visualization (architecture/structure/MEP)

Clash detection

Feasibility studies

Model-based quantity take-off and estimation

Visual and Geo-spatial coordination for construction of atypical shapes

Visualized scheduling (4D) management

Environmental analysis or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED)

certification (energy efficiency/CO2 emission analysis)

Creation of shop drawings and schedule management for installation of steel frame/curtain
wall

Visualized constructability review (material lifting operation planning/temporary resources

installation) etc. its integrity with other features such as all in one is the major part of its high
preference amongst engineers, designers and various other users as well,

it simplifies the working so that a non-technical person can also access it with knowing only
the basic considerations of loading

A user can learn it from the website of it only from Autodesk, about its various features,
applicability and technique to use
