THE GREAT GATSBY READING COMPREHENSION

INTRODUCTION

1. Where did Nick find a house?

Nick found a house in west egg, a long island suburb that is less fashionable than east egg,
which lies across the the long island sound.

2. Describe the house next to his and who his owner was.

The garden was filled with coloured lights, which hung from the trees. The house had its own
beach. Inside of the house, there was a library. The owner is Gatsby and nobody really knows
him, only rumours about him. Some say he had killed a man in the American army while
another person said he had been a German spy. Although, Jordan said too that Gatsby himself
had told her that he had been educated at Oxford, but she didn't believe it.

3. Who wrote the novel?

Francis Scott Fitzgerald is the author of the novel.

CHAPTER I

1. Daisy told Nick that she hoped her daughter would be" a beautiful little fool". What are
the reasons she gave? What is the interpretation of this discussion?

Daisy said it’s the best thing a girl can be in this world. She also said that she thinks
everything’s terrible anyhow. That she's been everywhere and done everything and she hates
it all. Nick at first believed her and felt sorry but after she let a smirk show on her face he
knew she was lying.

2. Why was Miss Jordan well known?

Nick had seen a picture of her in the news. He heard a story about her bad behaviour in a golf
match.

3. What year does the story take place?

In 1922 .

CHAPTER II

1. Myrtle's sister, Catherine, had been in a party at Gatsby's house. What did she tell about
him?

Catherine said that gatsby is awfully rich and that people say he got his money from germany.
In the war. She was afraid of him.

2. " I've got so many things to buy...." Myrtle said to Mrs Mckee. What does she want to buy?
Do you think they are useful things?

She wanted to buy a collar for the dog, an ashtray… they may be useful things for someone
who has a dog and smokes a lot.

3. What happens to Nick for the second time in his life? Why is this important?

He got drunk. everyone got drunk and myrtle and tom started arguing until tom hit myrtle
across her nose and she started bleeding.

CHAPTER III

1. Nick Carraway was invited to one of Gatsby's parties. At the party he heard people talking
about Gatsby. What did they say about him? Did they know him really?

A girl said that gatsby killed a man, a man added that he heard he was a German spy. They also
said he had been in the American army. They didn't really know him, they had just heard
rumors about him.

2. The butler came to Nick´s table and spoke to Jordan . What did the butler say to her?

The butler told Jordan that Mr Gatsby would like to speak to her.

3. How does Nick feel about New York?

Nick liked New York and its crowds of people.

CHAPTER IV

1. Everyone in West Egg Knew Gatsby's car. What colour was it?

Gatsby's car was yellow and silver.

2. Nick and Gatsby had lunch with Meyer Wolfsheim. What did Gatsby tell Nick about this
man?

Gatsby told Nick that Mr Wolfsheim was well known on Broadway. He was a clever gambler.
He had done many dangerous things but the police can't prove anything due to the fact that
he's too clever.

CHAPTER V

1. Explain the incident between Gatsby and the police officer?

I can't find it.

2. What prospect does Gatsby offer Nick? What´s his response?

Gatsby wanted Nick to invite Daisy to tea. Nick thought that Gatsby wasn't asking for much
after five years of waiting.

3. What does Nick do at the end of the chapter?

Nick puts his arm around Jordan and kisses her.

​CHAPTER VI

1. What did Dan leave Gatsby? What happened?

Dan left Gatsby a photograph of him, who used to be his friend and had a big yacht with which
they sailed around together for nearly five years. He was like a father to him. Dan died.

2. When Nick next sees Gatsby, surprisingly, who is with him?

Daisy, she is sat on the couch with Gatsby.
