CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
The advent of the internet in the 1990’s led to the major development in the world of
communication hence, the introduction of social networking sites (SNS’s). The coming into
being of these sites revolutionized the world of communication, and today, we celebrate its
ranging from education to entertainment.
Living in this kind of world makes the people more dependent to the technological
advancement and the more efficient world which fall into two influence the positive and the
negative influence, showing that technologies provide not only a positive but also a negative, and
the best example for the negative influence of technologies are the academic performance of the
students and the navigation of the teen agers to the websites which contains pornographies and
then diverse it towards non-educational and inappropriate actions including useless chatting. The
research has proved the heavy presence of social media usage among students.
Moreover, now and since before technologies contribute to the world in terms of medical,
educational, entertainment, and etc. that history cannot ignore! So we conducted a study to
provide more about using social media and how it affects the academic performance of the
students.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The evolution of the internet technology has led to its use as the best medium for
communication. Whereby two-third of the world’s internet population visit social networking or
blogging sites, thus serving as a communication connection tool. Social networking sites (SNS’s)
are online communities of internet users who went to communicate with other users about areas
of mutual interest, whether from a personal business or academic performance (William, Boyd,
Densten, Chin Diamond and Morgenthaler 2009). Numerous benefits have been obtain through
distant communication though the use of social networking sites.
However, the darker side within technological evolution has resulted in dilemmas such as
setback of real values of life especially among students who form the majority of users
interacting through the use of social networking sites. Online social networking sites focus on
building and reflecting social association among people who share interests and or activities.
With so many social networking sites displayed on the internet, students are tempted to
abandoned their homework and reading times in preference for chatting online with friends.
To make it more reliable. According to (Oye)2012, students’ academic performance is
affected the more they use social media. Social media platforms are mainly used by students for
socializing activities rather than academic purposes. Thus, the researchers conducted this study

5
to know the effect of social media usage to the academic performance of the senior high school
I.C.T./C.S.S. Students in school year 2019-2020.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to find out the effect of social media to the academic performance of
students. Specifically, it seeks to answer the following:
1. What are the perceptions of the students about social media?
2. What is the effect of social media usage to the students’ academic performance?
3. Do social media platforms that the students are mostly exposed influenced their
academic performance?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be able to contribute research-based data and knowledge on the possible
effects of using social media and to the academic performance of Grade 12 senior high school
students. Specifically, this study shall benefit the following various group of people.
STUDENTS
Not only the grade 12 senior high school students can benefit this study but also the
other students. Information gathered in this study can be useful to their academic purposes
regarding this issue.
TEACHERS
This study will help the teachers of the school to know the influence that social media
has on their students, so as to assist them to, enlighten and create awareness to the students on
the possible influence it has on them.
PARENTS
Parents will know the effects of social media usage, that has on their children so that
they will guide them on how to use social media wisely.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS
This study will provide relevance material for students and other researchers
undertaking the same study.

THE SCHOOL

6
This study helps the school to know the influence of social media in their students,
and the effects of social media to the students.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study is conducted to assess the effect of social media to the academic performance
of the Senior High School ICT-CSS students of Taligaman National High School, School-Year
2019-2020. Out of 104 total populations of ICT-CSS strand, the researchers only include 100 of
them as their respondents. The said study is limited on the following variables that the
researchers assumed that can answer to the problem. These variables are: respondents’ access to
internet usage, perceptions on social media and what social media platforms they usually used.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Academic performance- is the measurement of students’ achievement across various academic
subjects.
Social Media- applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social
networking.
Students- population of people who are studying in school.
SNS (Social Networking Sites)- an online platform that allows users to create a public profile
and interact with other users.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Social media is the interaction individuals in which they create, share information and ideas in
communities and also in network.

Today, social media has taken a new dimension and has encouraged more participation
through the introduction of mobile phones that support social networks applications.

A study conducted by Yanus and Sdlehi (2012) argued that students gained more vocabulary,
improved their writing skills and reduced their spelling mistakes through social media usage. In fact, as
an educational tool, social media enriches learning by giving both students and teachers the opportunity
to connect a new2 and very exciting way thereby encouraging flexible mode of learning.

In additional to this, social, media benefits students by connecting them to one another on
assignments and class projects (Okeeffe and Clake- peasan 2011). It is further buttressed in the study of

7
Houero and Esteban, (2013) and Selwyn, (2007) whose conclusion were that social media undoubtedly
general new opportunities to engaged students in higher education as they are remarkably effective at
connecting people and facilitating the exchange information.

On the other hand, aside these effects, other studies conducted by scholar have also proved
that social media can be detrimental to students’ academic literature caution is not taken in its usage.
To prove, a study conducted by Obi Bulus, Adam and Salaat (2012), titled “The need for safety
consciousness among Youths on social networking sites” concluded that social media effects students
use of English language. They use short-handwriting when chatting with friends. Moreover, A study
conducted by (Ndadu) 2013 stated that the use of social media among students has reached high levels
and has affected their study time, poor grammar and wrong spellings when socializing on social media as
well as diverting their attention from their studies. Students much of their grade point average.

There were studies that shown the positive effects of social media usage to the academic
performance of students as well its negative effects. At the end of this study, the researchers would
know also the effects of social media to the academic performance of the students of selected grade 11
and 12 I.C.T./C.S.S. students.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

The design of this study and way of gathering data will be found in this chapter. You will also know how
the study is made and who the respondents of this study are.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers use quantitative descriptive design to determine the responses of the
respondents given the survey questionnaire. By using the survey questionnaire, the researchers
gained first-hand information which are interpreted and analyzed.

THE SAMPLE

8
There are100 respondents coming from the four sections of Grade 11 and Grade 12
ICT - CSS SHS Students of Taligaman National High School who are randomly selected.

THE INSTRUMENT

The researchers provide survey questionnaires that contains pertinent questions in

order to determine the effect of social media usage to the academic performance of the selected
ICT - CSS SHS students.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURES

The researchers made a letter for the school permission to conduct a research study and
letter to the respondents. We then conduct a research to the Senior High School ICT-CSS strand
students after receiving the letter of permission signed by the school principal and TVL Track
Head. There are only 104 ICT-CSS student so the researchers only include 100 of them. After
retrieving the entire questionnaires, the researchers tally all the data gathered from the
respondents and interpret it.
