EXERCISES ON GEARS

SOLVE AND ANALYZE THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS CAREFULLY.

WRITE YOUR ANSWERS ON ANY SHEET OF PAPER (BOND PAPER,
YELLOW PAPER, NOTEBOOK, ETC.). ROUND OFF YOUR FINAL
ANSWERS TO FOUR DECIMAL PLACES ONLY. BOX YOUR FINAL
ANSWER. GOOD LUCK, GOD BLESS AND STAY SAFE.

1. A spur pinion rotates at 1800 rpm and transmits to a mating gear 30 HP.
The pitch diameter is 4” and the pressure angles pressure angle is 14 ½.
Determine the tangential loads in lb.

2. A spur pinion rotates at 1800 rpm and transmits to a mating gear 30 hp.
The pitch diameter is 4 inches and the angle of obliquity is 14.5 degrees.
Determine the tangential force in the gear in lbs.

3. A pair of helical gears has a diametral pitch of 5 and a normal circular

pitch of 0.55 inch. Determine the helix angle.

4. A 250 mm diameter helical gear has a 20-degree involute stub tooth and
a helix angle of 30 degrees. Determine:
a. the tangential and radial component of the tooth load in the plane of
rotation if 30 kW is transmitted at 1200 rpm
b. the axial component of the tooth load
c. the resultant tooth load
d. the angle of obliquity in the plane normal to the pitch element of the
tooth

5. A worm gear consists of a worm with a triple thread driving a worm wheel
with 48 teeth which is attached to a 24 inches pulley. The worm is driven
at 900 rpm. Find the speed of the worm wheel.

6. A triple-threaded worm has a pitch diameter of 4 inches. The wheel has

36 teeth and a pitch diameter of 10 inches. Compute the lead angle.
