BIOLOGY 1 (FSC 001)
MODULE SYNOPSIS

This module emphasizes on psychological aspects where students are taught to


manage time effectively, cope with stress and various factors that influence excellence in
studies. The note-taking section teaches learners the various forms and techniques of
note-taking. This includes mind-mapping and outlining. The last section focuses on the
application of what has been learnt through other skills such as writing and reading.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon the successful completion of this module, the student should be able to:
LO1. Discover their ideal study methods and build upon it to maximize learning.
LO2. Instil effective time and stress management methods, and goal setting.
LO3. Extract information from texts and summarize them.
LO4. Practice proper academic writing techniques and discipline.

1 Attitude towards studying

Description: Types of goals. Importance of setting goals effectively. S.M.A.R.T.E.R..

3 Mind Mapping
Description: Definition. Step-by-step process of effective mind mapping.

4 Managing Time and Stress


Description: Effects of time and stress. Methods to manage time and stress.

5 Concentration and focusing.


Description: Definition. Methods to facilitate concentration.

6 Memory training
Description: Types of memory. Science behind memory. How to improve memory.

7 Main ideas and supporting details.


Description: Defining, identifying and extracting main ideas and supporting details.

8 Thesis statements and topic sentences.


Description: Defining, identifying and extracting thesis statements and topic sentences.

Group Students will be preparing a 1000-word
essay centred around a designated

Individual test with a time span of 150 minutes via break

assessment tasks that are not examinations, feedback should be within 20 working days from
the date of submission. This might be extended to 30 days for a Major Project module (please
note that working days excludes from public holiday). The feedback could either be online, in
the classroom or any other platform utilised by the lecturer.

ASSIGNMENT BRIEF

Tests and Quizzes: Individual

This is an individual assessment and is worth 20% (in total) of your carry marks. Tests will
include subjective and essay questions. Topics to be tested will depend on the class’s progress
through the syllabus. You are expected to exhibit understanding of the tested topics, while also
being able to translate the understanding into writing.

Week 3, week 6 and week 9.

Assignment: Group

This is a group assignment and is worth 20% of your carry marks. Each group will be
designated, at random, one of the note taking methods listed below. Each group will then write a
1000-words essay that explains the note taking methods in enough clarity to be distributed to
other teams. An in-depth guideline explaining the type of content you are expected to explore
and write on will be provided in class.

Presentation: Group

This is a group video presentation and is worth 10% of your carry marks. Each group will be
designated, at random, one of the note taking methods as mentioned above Each group will
then create a 4-5 minute video that explains the note taking methods in sufficient clarity to be
distributed to other teams. Creativity will be rewarded. An in-depth guideline to help you design
your video will be provided in class.
