Company provides
campervans for carers
Inverness campervan company, Highland Auto Campers, has
provided three of its campervans to a local care home, Isobel Fraser
Care Home, to provide accommodation to its key workers during the
coronavirus pandemic.
Highland Auto Campers runs a fleet of campervans normally hired
out to holidaymakers visiting the Scottish Highlands. Mark Jarratt, one
of the owners, said: “I have been impressed with way that local
businesses in the Highlands – and in the wider community – have
been pulling together during the current crisis. When Victoria
Connolly (Manager at the Isobel Fraser Care Home) approached us
to help, we immediately agreed to assist in any way that we could…
We just hope that the campers provide them somewhere warm and
comfortable to stay while they are based on site.”

W
ith the weather forecast looking good for the
weekend, my husband, Steve, and I wasted no
time in throwing the essentials into our trusty
classic camper and setting off for Snowdonia
as soon as the working week was done.
The journey took around four hours, being a 200-mile
drive away. We were very pleased to find that the on-site
bar at Tyddyn Llwyn Camping, Caravan and Touring Park
near Porthmadog was still open and happy to check us in
and serve us a well-earned pint of real ale upon our arrival
at 10pm!
The next morning, we were up bright and early in
preparation for a big day out. Although we’d been up
Snowdon a couple of times before, via the hair-raising Crib
Goch route and also the more sedate Pyg Track from the
Llanberis side of the mountain, the quieter, but equally
dramatic, south ridge was yet to be explored.
Summit special
Being a lovely sunny morning, we figured we wouldn’t
be alone in wanting to conquer this friendly giant, which is
said to be the tomb of the giant Rhitta Gawr, who wore a
cloak made of men’s beards and was killed by King Arthur.
He gives Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) its name, as this loosely
translates as ‘tumulus’.
From the campsite, we took a short drive over to Pont
Bethania just beyond the popular village of Beddgelert
and secured a spot at the pay and display car park. This
was already filling up quickly, despite it only being 8am.
Not having had breakfast, we enjoyed a hearty bowl of
porridge and a cup of tea in our ’van before setting off.
The route up Snowdon from Pont Bethania is via the
Watkin Path. This path, like many of the footpaths in
Snowdonia, owes its origins to its slate mining history. As
a result, the first part of the hike up to the old quarry that
sits in a green valley at the foot of Snowdon is an easy one.
The Watkin Path is a well-marked track that follows a
river upwards and is punctuated by waterfalls that are

This site advertises itself as dog-friendly,

everyone-friendly and that, more than
anything, is what makes it a special site.
When we visited there were signs posted
offering you free toothpaste, shower gel,
shampoo, body lotion and soap. The wardens
will even supply you with a toothbrush if you
don’t remember to bring your own!
The shower blocks are spotlessly clean, too.
The site is relatively small and tranquil, and has
been extensively landscaped, ensuring it
blends in with the surrounding countryside.
There are various walks in the area and you
can reach at least five pubs on foot, including
the Bell Inn in Winterbourne Stoke, where full
English breakfast is served from 9am. You can
also walk to a farm shop at Berwick.
The site is an ideal base for exploring all

draw. It’s just 10 minutes away by car – or an

then went out to the beach on the next. We spotted the stunning beach and castle

The site itself is perfect. It’s not too big and

We take a look at what's been rockin' your weird
and wonderful campervan world this month...
A hasty retreat!
At the beginning of March, we headed off to complete the Scottish South West Coast 300 but, after just three
days, the COVID-19 situation started to worsen and so we wisely decided to head home back to North Wales.
We broke up the drive home with a stopover at Arnside, south Cumbria, and hopefully, in better times, we’ll
visit again. This photo of the two campervans was taken at Mull of Galloway before we made our hasty retreat.

O
wning a classic campervan is a huge amount
of fun, especially an old vee-dub because you
automatically become a member of a secret
society that’s largely concerned with waving
at fellow owners.
There are rules, of course. As T25 owners, one can wave
at those in the older T1 and T2 splitty and bay window VW
campers. When you see another T25, it’s good practice to
be more enthusiastic – for instance, both passengers may
wave, and the flashing of lights is welcomed, too. Of late,
the newer T4 owners seem to have included themselves
in the club as well, although I think the jury is still out…
There’s also something very carefree and liberating
about living with an older camper. Unlike modern vehicles
that are all about electronics, diagnostics and fancy,
expensive body parts, there’s not much that can’t be
repaired on a T25 with just an old-fashioned toolbox.
That’s a good thing because bits, like the sliding door,
are more prone to falling off, too. Once, because a 50p
coin had become wedged in the runner. The result was
that the door flew open while pulling out of a campsite,
hurling our coolbox and beer supply into a hedge.
Another time, it fell off into the road at a service station
on the M62, simply because it felt like it. But, thanks to the
support of a folding barbecue and a portable gas fire, and
the wonders of YouTube, we simply repositioned it back
onto the runners and continued on our journey.
Now you can’t do that on a modern T6! Although,
admittedly, sliding doors no longer just fall off VW
