pH Meters are used to measure acidity levels in water & wastewater treatment, pharmaceuticals, chemicals &
petrochemicals, and other applications are known as pH meters. They are mostly used in food & beverages,
pharmaceuticals, mining, water treatment plants, and other industries.

An electrical conductivity meter (EC meter) measures the electrical conductivity in a solution. It has
multiple applications in research and engineering, with common usage in hydroponics, aquaculture,
aquaponics, and freshwater systems to monitor the amount of nutrients, salts or impurities in the water.

A Dissolved Oxygen Meter is used to measure the amount of oxygen present in a unit volume of water; it
indicates if the water is useful for a specific application like water treatment plants, sewage treatment works,
river monitoring and fish farming.

A sodium analyzer is an on-line measurement system to ensure that water is not contaminated with sodium,
which can be corrosive and damaging in processes that require pure or ultrapure water. They are often used in
power plants for monitoring water cycle chemistry or in microelectronics manufacturing.

See the Light by Making a Cell Phone Spectrophotometer:

A spectrophotometer is a piece of lab equipment that measures the intensity of light. Scientists use this
expensive tool for a range of applications, including exploring how chemicals react, how quickly microorganisms
multiply, and how much protein or DNA is present in a sample.

With a cellphone and some specialty items like an LED and a simple diffraction grating slide, you can create
your own DIY apparatus to mimic the functionality of a spectrophotometer. Using your cellphone's camera to
record the light that passes through a solution of colored liquid, you can then use computer-based
spectrophotometry tools to analyze the images and evaluate light intensity.

Gas Chromatography is used extensively in forensic science. Disciplines as diverse as solid drug dose (pre-
consumption form) identification and quantification, arson investigation, paint chip analysis, and toxicology
cases, employ GC to identify and quantify various biological specimens and crime-scene evidence.

HPLC has many applications in both laboratory and clinical science. It is a common technique used in
pharmaceutical development, as it is a dependable way to obtain and ensure product purity While HPLC can
produce extremely high quality (pure) products, it is not always the primary method used in the production of
bulk drug materials According to the European pharmacopoeia, HPLC is used in only 15.5% of
syntheses However, it plays a role in 44% of syntheses in the United States pharmacopoeia. This could possibly
be due to differences in monetary and time constraints, as HPLC on a large scale can be an expensive
technique. An increase in specificity, precision, and accuracy that occurs with HPLC unfortunately corresponds
to an increase in cost.
