Assessment Criteria

AC 1.1 Describe what is meant by the term Prejudice

Prejudice:
Prejudice is an attitude or feelings that people have about someone in regard to their
background, status, religion, ethnicity, appearance or other characteristics.

Describe what is meant by the term Discrimination

Discrimination is the prejudicial treatment of a certain person or category of people. When

someone acts upon their prejudice, rather than keeping it to themselves, it becomes
discrimination.

AC 1.2 Explain THREE stereotypes linked to prejudice.

Prejudice stereotypes:
Example 1:
White People are the Superior race, which manifested from multiple things such as Hitler’s
Aryan Race ideology, the slave trade of black people, etc. Some people today still believe this
stereotype to be true due to the fact African American people only gained civil rights less than
100 years ago, leaving people who still live from then or who had this prejudice passed down to
them from parents or grandparents.

Example 2:

All Catholics are in the IRA, which mainly comes from The Troubles and the stigma/fear English
people has that Irish people were all terrorists, similar to today’s prejudice that Muslims are
terrorists. This prejudice still exists today mainly among some English people although it’s not
as prominent as it once was.

Example 3:

All Muslim people are terrorists/apart of ISIS, this is a more recent stereotype which, because of
the very small amount of Muslim people participating in terrorism groups, has led to a lot of
people incorrectly believing all Muslim people are involved.

Explain THREE stereotypes linked to discrimination.

Discrimination stereotypes:
Example 1:
The Holocaust, which was caused by Hitler due to the fact he was anti-Semitic towards Jewish
people as he believed they were the reason Germany lost World War One among other things.
Hitler and the Nazis went to extreme lengths to persecute Jewish people which eventually led
to this.

Example 2:

Lack of employed disabled people, which is an issue that is still happening in today’s society due
to incorrect beliefs like they only have entry-level skills, require more extensive training and
that they are not as reliable as other workers.

Example 3:

The Black Slave Trade, which was fuelled by the belief years ago that Black people were inferior to
other races and the fact that black people weren’t seen as important or of value and that they were
treated like a possession rather than a person.
