THE DEFINITION OF TORQUE
“Torque is the application of a force acting at a radial distance and tending to cause
rotation.”
M2 = M1 x L2
L1
Where L1 is the normal length and L2 is the extended length, M1 is the set torque and M2 the
actual torque applied to the nut.
STANDARD CALCULATION FOR NUT SIZES GIVEN THREAD TYPES UNC & UNF
The across flat section of the nut which is either regular hex, 1 ½ times the bolt diameter or
heavy hex, 1 ½ times the bolt diameter plus 1/8- inch.
Example: 1 ¼ inch bolt
1 ¼ x 1 ½ = 1 ⅞ - inch A./F. Regular hex nut
Example: 1 ¼ inch bolt
(1 ¼ x 1 ½) + ⅛ - inch = 2 inch A.F. heavy hex nut.
